In the past five years, more and more teams have switched from three- to four-year contracts for all draft picks below the second round. Any term longer than four years was outlawed by the 2006 extension of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, restricting all contracts below the first round to four years. As a result, almost all teams except a couple of holdouts now negotiate four-year contracts (interestingly, the two Super Bowl participants, Arizona and Pittsburgh, still do three-year deals in the lower rounds; maybe there’s something to that).

Yep you're correct, I read "fifth" yesterday too. That's worse than making the original error.

Maybe it's part of the Texans' negotiation process:

Texans: Hi Connor we really want you on the team, so we're willing to pay you the top dollar amount in the fifth round where we drafted you.

Connor's agent: Ummmm, that's not right.

Texans: Okay, okay you caught us...third round money it is!

It isn't an issue of "get" a 4 year deal. Players fight for shorter contracts as they are generally a small signing bonus and then league minimum each year. If he had his way, he would have signed a 3 year deal. The salary isn't guaranteed anyway.

Texans Sign Another 4th-Rounder

Glover Quinn Profile

The Houston Texans have signed the first of their two fourth-round draft picks, CB Glover Quin, the team announced on Friday.

According to a league source, the former University of New Mexico defensive back signed a four-year deal worth $2.24 million. The deal also includes a signing bonus of roughly $490,000.

Quin, a Mississippi native, played in 36 career games, starting 34 for the Lobos. He earned consensus first team all-Mountain West Conference honors as a senior. He finished his career with 156 tackles, a school record 32 pass break-ups and seven interceptions.

Quin was voted most valuable player by his teammates last season, the first defensive back to earn the honor since Brian Urlacher in 1999. As a senior he led the Mountain West Conference with a career-high five interceptions and ranked first in the league with 16 passes defensed.

Quin began his collegiate career at Southwest Mississippi Community College, posting 40 tackles, eight deflections, two interceptions and one touchdown in his lone season of play in 2005. He attended North Pike High School in Summit, Mississippi finishing as a four-year letterman in football and basketball. He was the Jaguar's team MVP in both sports as a senior. He totaled 2,552 rushing yards, 224 tackles and 13 interceptions in his prep career.

Quinn will compete for playing time this season against young cornerbacks such as rookie Brice McCain, Antwaun Molden, and Fred Bennett.
