Former No. 2 NFL draft pick Ryan Leaf failed to turn himself in on drug and burglary charges and is wanted by police in Texas, the San Diego Union Tribune reported Thursday.

“At one point he said he was going to turn himself in. He hasn't turned himself in yet, and if he gets picked up he's going to be arrested,” Randall County prosecutor Lacy Miller said. “If he gets picked up out of our jurisdiction, then we will extradite him or use whatever means we have to get him back. Right now he is a wanted individual.”

A warrant for Leaf's arrest was issued May 20, the same day he received nine indictments involving use of prescription painkiller medication, the Union Tribune said.

He was last heard yelling "knock it off!" at an airline employee.

Man, I remember watching Leaf being interviewed when he first got that job as a coach in college. I thought it was good for him and that he might end up being a good coach since he went through so much in the NFL and could probably teach some younger guys some of the hard lessons.

Then the pain killer incident happened. I sot of try and root for the guy, since he's always being made fun of and poked by the media at least once a month where they show his old videos and embarrassing moments.

But what is with the burglary charges he has? When did that happen?

And now that he hasn't turned himself in, he's just digging his own hole even further.

Leaf coached at West Texas A&M University, which is in Canyon about 10 miles south of Amarillo, TX. It's where both me and my wife graduated from. I in 1998 and her in 1999.

It happened in October of 2008. He must have gotten hooked on hydrocodone and couldn't kick it. Because he was the QB coach for WTAMU, he had overheard player conversation about a player who had been prescribed the stuff...and he had the brilliant idea to burglarize it.

Additionally, he tried to go to a doctor and submit some sort of information on his paperwork thereby claiming he needed the stuff.

I feel awful for the guy. About four years ago, he was down and out. WTAMU fired its football coach who had won like 2 games in the 2 or 3 years of his tenure. They hired Don Carthel, who had been coaching the Amarillo Dusters Arena2 football team. They switched to the Texas Tech offense, even going so far as to ask Mike Leach if they could sit in on all meetings, look at their playbook, attend practices, interview players and coaches, and Carthel said they basically lived at Jones Stadium over that first summer.

WT was picked to finish last the first year. We won the division, handily, by scoring about 50 points a game. We could get the ball with 1:34 left before half......and score a TD after starting at our own 10. It was criminal. Then we won the division AGAIN the next season. Then we tied for the division crown the third season because we lost ONE game, and it was to Abilene Christian who had also lost one game.

A former coach of Leaf had called Carthel several years ago, and said he recommended Leaf. Carthel gave him a chance, and it was working out really well. Leaf, even though he has millions (maybe. LOL) lived in a little apartment in Canyon...he lived the simple life. He made no waves. Everybody in Canyon treated him like he was one of their own, refraining from bugging him and just generally accepting him for who he is. It appeared that he was truly happy for the first time in a long time. Had dreams of leaving WT one day and coaching at a small college in Washington state. Then it all got messy. In a hurry.

Chaun Thompson, one of our LBs, was a WTAMU guy. I got to see him play at WT, and it was awesome when he was drafted by the Browns. The Chargers signed WT WR Charly Martin as an UDFA this past April, and he's basically a Wes Welker look-a-like. Holds basically all the receiving records at WT. Duane Thomas and Mercury Morris were WT players back before WT joined the A&M system of colleges. Terry Funk played, too. College is older than Texas Tech. WT was founded in 1910 and Tech in 1923.
