Default J.J. Moses

Is he going to be our K.R. next year? He is a good returner, but do you think they will try somebody who gives us a chance to take it all the way?

JJ is our man until we find someone better who better utilizes a roster spot...JJ is a good return man, but isn't a threat in the passing game, and, like you said, he isn't going to take one to the house...

That said, he still gets solid yardage on every return and he'll be with us until someone better comes along...

Chances are we draft someone we feel can replace him in the latter rounds and let them fight it out in the preseason...

And the annual JJ threads have arrived.

The day the Texans find someone that (a) will play a legitimate role somewhere else on the depth chart and (b) won't put the ball on the ground, JJ is in serious trouble. IMO and I would guess Capers' opinion taking it to the house is a distant third to those considerations. JJ has returned 117 kicks and 72 punts for the Texans without muffing one and with only 1 turnover on a return.

I'll take a guy who doesn't put the ball on the ground and gets solid yardage every return over someone who might return a couple a year, but you don't know if he's going to be stuffed inside the 20 or fumble the ball. Solid feild position is HUGE in the nfl and I thought our special teams were pretty solid this year. There were a couple of times this year where I thought JJ was going to break it, he just didn't, but he sure came close. Also luck has to do with it. Everybody has to hit their blocks perfect, it takes alot more than one man to return a kick. I would hate to see JJ go, he has done a great job. I'm pretty sure we all remember that one game he missed where we were trying everybody out on kick returns and there were balls dropped everywhere.

If the best thing we can say about our kick returner is that he doesn't fumble, then we're setting the bar toooooooo low ...........

In 2003 Moses was:
11th in the league in kickoff returns (23.4 yards) and
27th in the league in punt returns (6.8 yards)

In 2004 Moses was:
23rd in the league in kickoff returns (22.1 yards) and
16th in the league in punt returns (8.6 yards)

For someone who is strictly a return specialist and doesn't contribute on offense or defense, those numbers are not good enough. However, I don't know if the problem is with Moses himself or with his blocking. As an expansion team, the Texans biggest weakness is overall depth. That really hampers the special teams because mostly backups occupy those positions. Therefore it is hard for the Texans to have good special teams because they don't have the same amount of talent as backups as most teams.

thats just a 1 yard difference on kick returns and he picked up 2 yards on punt returns. Look our coaching staff tried to find a replacement last offseason, because Capers wants more bang for his buck out of the roster spot, but jj won the job. He will continue to hold the job until someone beats him out. That happens on almost every team, especialy special teams. Guys that are drafted in the late rounds have to come in and try to win a roster spot on special teams, in most cases thats really their only hope. So I really don't see the point even talking about it. If there is someone better he'll win the job and if not jj will be returning kicks for us, its as simple as that.

good posting...I am not the biggest JJ fan but if he keeps winning the job he keeps winning the job. he will have probably have to beat out a similar cast of eight to ten characters as he did in 2004.

I watched this more closely this year after last year's JJ discusions and IMO the Texans punt and kick blocking is in the bottom third of the league. Doesn't mean JJ would be taking them to the house with good blocking, but his averages would be better and it only takes a few yards on those averages to rank much higher--top 10 is 1.3 yds more on punts and 2.3 yds on kicks. Strikes me that good blocking could easily make up that kind of difference.

Blocking arguments with RBs and returners all have some "chicken and egg" element to them. Does a good skill player make his blockers as much his blockers make him? I can think of many examples where a better guy all of a sudden makes the same blocking look good. (see Julius Jones with Cowboys verus Eddie George this year).

I lean more that JJ Moses is just "another guy" as a returner. Does some good things as a returner but overall is not an explosive playmaker, but is not an embarrassment.

I agree, and when I was watching I was looking specifically to try to see what was returner fault (didn't take advantage of the blocking) and what was blocking fault. Saw quite a few occasions where JJ was trying to follow the wedge (he did much less dancing this year) and someone was let through virtually unmolested. Tried to pay attention in other games and look at the blocking as well. Not saying my analysis skills are great, just that my impression was the blocking was sub-par by the Texans. I'll be happy as a lark when someone that fills a legitimate role like Faggins or Armstrong (not those guys in particular but guys that actually contribute in their primary roles not just some other theoretical WR who never actually hits the field as a WR) can beat JJ out.

Has J J ever returned 1 for a td? Have the Texans ever returned a kick for a td?

I've always wondered if a player feel embarrased if they get tackled by tiny kickers or punters.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Dante Hall is the best return man in the game. I've seen the Chiefs use him on offense because he's a gamebreaker. I would'nt think of using JJ on offense. To sum it up he's a reliable return man who gives you average results. I'm trying to think of good return men from the Super Bowl . Desmond Howard , Az Hakeem , Meggett, the pats have a guy from A/M , Steve Smith. There were 2 teams with Neon Deon returning kicks.

JJ has never returned one for a TD. But there has been a returned kick for a TD before. It was our first year against the Baltimore Ravens, Avion Black returned a kick off for a TD.

On another note, I really hope JJ stays as the KR for the Texans. Above anything else, he really gives me a threat on Madden because I can take it to the house almost everytime with that guy.

Also, I think JJ will continue to beat out competition that is only trying to be a KR for the sake of making the team rather than being a legitimate KR.

Funny, I seem to remember the Jags KR getting caught twice by Kris Brown (206 lbs by the way) twice in one game. Don't remember the folks at the Jags MB being so bent out of shape about it.

It is absolutely hilarious or sad IMO that folks consistantly point to that Jets return when arguing JJ should be replaced. He returned the ball 70 freakin yards putting the Texans into position to win the game and he gets 1000 times more flack than if he had returned it 30 yds. Stupid.
