I had a bad vibe after Buddy Ryan punched Gilbride going into the play-offs.....

I grew up with Gilbride's son at the time that this happened and Gilbride SR was my baseball coach as well. I knew there entire family very well and still talk to Kevin Jr. until this day. He is now coaching at Temple UNiversity and following in his father's foot steps.

I was at this game actually as a kid, and we couldn't believe that this skirmish happened when we got home and saw it on the news.

Kevin Jr. was harrassed about his dad being punched for a long time after that happened.

Buddy Ryan truly was a total scumbag for that punch. I was so glad that we got rid of that pie hole.

I looked for this a while back and wasn't able to find it. Thanks for posting this. Must spread some rep.

I was at that game, but did not know what had transpired until the way home and we were listening to the post-game on the radio.

Just watched it through the 1st half, and "the punch". LOL

One thing I noticed different about the Oilers then and the present day Texans is the Oilers played with attitude on both sides of the ball. Even the offensive players were getting into shoving matches with the Jet's defense. The Texans need that kind of attitude, it would certainly be refreshing.

Buddy punched Gilbride because his stat farming in garbage time turned the ball over with an interception when they should have been running the ball and getting rid of the last few minutes. Well because of the unncessary risk and the turnover, it forced Ryan to put his defense back on the field in a meaningless game. What happens? The Jets of course go deep and Marcus Robertson blows out his knee. Ryan was incensed and went over to confront Gilbride and Ryan lost his cool.

Texecutioner, no offense as I am sure Gilbride is a great guy and in the end he got the last laugh getting a Super Bowl ring with the Giants and has enjoyed a long and heralded career, but once Ryan left/got fired our team, Kevin included, went into the tank. Ryan was the catalyst for the best regular season in Oilers history and for that I will always be thankful. I wanted Pardee and Gilbride fired and for Ryan to be HC. The punch sealed that deal as did Montana completing over the middle to Kerry Cash in the exact area where Marcus Robertson would normally be dialing mofos up.

the locker room became divided and they never really recovered and then we had the Cody Carlson era and we all know how well that went.....

I know exactly what happened and how that whole thing started. I can even tell you what he said before he punched Gilbride. He said "that was a junior high call." It doesn't matter really. Buddy Ryan was a grown man that committed one of the most despicable acts as a coach in the history of the NFL by punching another one of his fellow coaches during the middle of a game. He was a classless piece garbage for that and it was unforgivable. He wrote his ticket out of town for doing that.

And how soon you also forget that was the season where the Oilers lost to the Bills in the playoffs where Ryan's defense gave up a 32 point lead in less than one half. His defense was great in the season but failed miserably in the playoffs. And the Oilers had a ton of talent on that defense as well. It's not like Ryan was working with some scrubs and made magic happen.

That has been a long time time and I need my memory to be refreshed, but I thought that after that incident that season, that Ryan moved on to Arizona the next season (1994) as a head coach. I do recall though that the night of the fight, my son's band had performed in the Tournament of Roses Parade and we were hanging out at a hamburger joint called Ed Debevic's in Beverly Hills watching the game on TV.

It's been a while, so I just watched it again. The Oilers were up 14-0 with less than a minute left, after two very long TD drives (both time and distance). On 1st down, they threw long incomplete, and on 2nd down, Carlson dropped back to pass and Hopkins just got beat by his man and it was a sack/fumble.

So how does this mesh with what you said? I mean, it wasn't garbage time, they had been controlling the clock, and they were trying to score before halftime. I guess they could have run the clock out, but there's something to be said for putting your foot on their throats early.

Buddy's an asshat. That doesn't mean he didn't put together some great defensive schemes, but if we all got to run around punching coaches we second-guessed ... well, that would be kind of fun actually.

Are you sure that wasn't the season that we lost to the Bills? Man, my memory must not be up to par anymore. I could have sworn that it was.

I know that we had a sweet defense and all with Buddy, but that sweet defense didn't exactly show up big time in the post season. ANd you also have to remember how many great players were on that defense to make it what it was. That was a stable of good players that been built for years.

Ryan was always an excellent coach and the guy that pretty much invented the 46 Defense in Chicago if I'm not mistaken, but punching another coach towards the end of the season and messing with the chemistry between the staff was unacceptable and unforgivable. That wasn't the first time Buddy did something like that either. I read an article where it said that he did that quite frequently actually.

Lamar Lathan was a beast for a season or two. I remember that rap song they used to play on the radio back then. That was also in Michael Barrow's early years. I remember when Barrow beat up on the Steelers QB around that time.

Childress was always the heart and soul of the Oilers defense.

We had a pretty bad ass secondary with Dish and Mcdowell as well along with Bishop as a back up.

In fact, I remember talking to a friend after the Buffalo game saying "we need Buddy Ryan as our DC." Turns out I called it - but it just didn't help us against Joe Montana the following year.

Maybe this will jog your memory - remember in the KC loss in the Astrodome, Montana threw a late TD pass to someone - maybe Tony Gonzalez - and right where Tony caught the ball in the end zone, there was a huge airbrush banner hanging in front of the seats which was just a giant image of Buddy Ryan's face - and Tony (or whatever Chief it was) just SPIKED the ball right in Buddy's face!

Anyone remember that? Ah, memories. I was sick to DEATH after that loss to KC. It didn't hurt as much as Buffalo, but the fact that it was at HOME after having a BYE WEEK. Ugh. I was sick.
