Default [BSPN] Spotlight or searchlight for Texans safeties?

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcsouth/...safeties-.html

Defensive upgrades were to be the theme of the offseason for the Houston Texans.

They grabbed defensive lineman Antonio Smith with a big-dollar free-agent contract. They drafted linebacker Brian Cushing with the No. 15 pick overall.

But outside of adding fourth- and sixth-round cornerbacks and a seventh-round safety/special-teamer in the draft, the Texans didn't add anyone of note to their secondary.

What does that say?

Either the Texans liked what they had enough to believe it will work better with an upgraded front seven, or they didn't like the options in free agency or the high value spots in the draft. Perhaps both.

"We have some quality guys back there, that if things are going correctly, they can contribute and make plays for us," said defensive coordinator Frank Bush, who took over as defensive coordinator for Richard Smith, whom Gary Kubiak let go. "Of course it's all tied together. Hopefully the front seven can do some things that are going to ease some of the pressures on the back end."

Bush said his veteran safeties are smart, contentious and understand the system and that the younger guys at the position are following suit.

Had there been a "gotta have him" first-round safety, he could have landed in Houston. There wasn't, so at organized team activities (OTAs) this week the Texans have lined up with Nick Ferguson at strong safety and Eugene Wilson at free safety on the first-team defense, with Brandon Harrison and Dominique Barber behind them.

When Eugene Wilson and Nick Ferguson were on other teams they were considered solid players.

Hopefully here they're considered stop-gap players. We've got a play maker at almost every position on the team save for safety. When I say, WHEN are you gonna get a safety?

As an aside, I do like that Frank Bush is out front and vocal, unlike other DCs we have had. Whether it is confidence, the need for him to show ownership of the defense, his style, or is designed to take pressure off of Kubiak, I don't care. We have a face of the Texans D and I get the feeling that a personality for this unit will develop.

I have no idea if he can coach, but I know who is in charge and hope that it scales to the locker room. I have a feeling that the players are going to play for this guy, and that, gets me excited.

And one day, when we find suitable replacements and they're ready to step up, Wilson & Ferguson will be cut from here.

everyone gets replaced sooner or later

I like the fact there was no mention of Barwin. he's flying low & off the radar. Texans could have went FS in 2nd but one, there was a serious run @ the beginning of the 2nd rd. & two they had a 1st rd. grade on Conner Barwin. that is probably higher than Delmas or Chung. think of Quin as a poor mans Jenkins, thats value in the 4th so they can stretch resouces up front to address pass rush. this draft was all about getting more aggressive & athletic with the front 7 on defense, at least that would appear was the game plan they executed

Aren't safeties the last line of defense? Hence the name "safety"... We still had to add some players to our defensive core, so I'm not angry that we didn't grab safety till later on.

Yes they are the last line of defense however having great Safety play allows the other 9 players to be more aggressive and take chances. Plus they should be able to create turnovers.

To be perfectly honest... I'm completely okay with trading the draft away to walk away next year with both Mays and Berry. Boom, safety problems gone. We'd go from bottom 5 safeties in the NFL, to top 3 in one offseason.
I was thinking Eric Berry also but the most i would give for him is our 1st 3rd and 5th and i know this is a lot
