Q & A with DC Bush offers fresh insights on Draft Picks, plans for Texans' Defense

Defensive coordinator Frank Bush: First of all, we are excited about the players we did draft. We got some really good players who are going to be able to come in and help our football team. I am excited about these kids. (Brian) Cushing brings a lot of passion. He played at USC and was a starter for over three years there, and he can play all three (linebacker) positions. He’s a smart kid; he’s a very tough kid. He loves to play the game. He runs around and knocks the crap out of people. We like that part about him, and he’s very versatile.

(Connor) Barwin, he’s got “freakish” athletic ability. He’s a big kid that’s extremely fast. He’s agile and mobile. We see that kid coming in and really helping us against the pass game. He can rush the passer because he has such tremendous speed. We can do some different things with Antonio (Smith) and Mario (Williams) that can create some different packages for us and be a little bit unorthodox, so people can’t get a read on us all the time. So we are excited about what he brings to the table.

Hm, that was a pretty good read. Filled with stuff fans want to hear, of course, but still a good read. The Tim Bulman question was a good one, I was thinking the same exact thing. Thanks for posting.

Something tells me its gonna be a 4-3 under look. Press coverage with 1 gap DTs.

This will play to cushings (as he played the sam right over the TE jamming his release) and our DTs strength. And since we're HORRIBLE in the off man/cover three alignment. I see our corners playing a lot closer to the LOS.

Yup, kind of looks that way. I suspect we are going to look a lot better on defense this year as that scheme would seem to play to our guys strengths much better.

I think we'll see Bulman carve out a niche in the rotation at both DE/DT. He's got such a high motor you gotta get guys like that on the field to wear out the opposing OL.

There's no mistaking what defensive coordinator Gregg Williams wants of his charges -- attack, attack, attack

The message defensive coordinator Gregg Williams delivered at his first meeting with rookie Saints defenders was short and direct.

"Knock 'em the (. . .) out!"

Mission statements don't get much clearer than that -- simple and to the point.

In one five-syllable directive, the Saints new defensive coordinator set the tone for his defense and made it known what he expected from his troops during the five-practice minicamp.

"I loved it," said rookie safety Chip Vaughn, a fourth-round draft pick from Wake Forest.

The read-and-react era of Saints defensive football officially ended Friday, the first on-field work of any kind for Williams as a member of Coach Sean Payton's staff.

No more rope-a-dope.

No more bend-but-don't break.

With Williams calling the shots, the Saints will attack from the opening snap and not back down. At least that's the impression Saints defenders received from Williams during their initial meeting.

Like looking into a mirror..........Hope that Bush follows suit with the Texans.

"He wants smart players who are tough," said Jenkins, the gem of the team's four-man rookie class and the focus of a large media contingent throughout the workout. "If you are going to loaf or not play hard or make a bunch of mistakes, then he doesn't want you on his team."

There was no loafing Friday. In fact, when a few unfortunate rookies ran the wrong way during a drill early in practice, they were forced to drop and perform pushups before rejoining their teammates. The message: Mental errors, even seemingly harmless ones, will not be tolerated.

This is what I hope Bush brings to our defense.

Bush: Good Idea. We've got some kids with some speed.

Kollar: Yep there quick and stuff.

Bush: Maybe we could try that Cushing kid out in a blitz package.

Kollar: Oh yeah. send him from the outside and stuff.

Bush: Barwin is a good kid too.

Kollar: Yeah. He looks kinda like Adam Sandler and stuff.

Bush: I love Sandler. Did you see that movie where he is a kid who plays golf?

Kollar: Yeah. He beats up Bob Barker and stuff!

Bush: Wow! Bob Barker is the oldest kid I've ever seen!
