Under Defense

like the Cushing pick. After talking to Frank Bush, our team’s defensive coordinator, I understand exactly what they are thinking as well. They saw what most people saw in Brian Cushing. A solid, four year starter at the country’s top program (right now). He is tough, a workaholic, and will be strong against the run. From Bush’s comments it looks like we will run more “under” defense than we have in the past. That looks like a nose to the strong side, a 5 technique (DE that is just outside the OT) and a Sam on the line of scrimmage. The reason I think this is because Bush made reference to Cushing excelling at jamming TEs at the LOS (line of scrimmage). Connor Barwin I thought was another good choice. There weren’t any good DTs left and the top four corners were off the board already so this was a logical choice. Barwin looks like he will be able to put on 10 more pounds no problem and appears to be a heck of an athlete. Look for him to be a pass rush specialist his first year and build from that point.

If that is Antonio Smith playing that 5-tech, I can just about guarantee a Pro Bowl appearance for him. Playing that 5-tech will allow him a lot of one-on-one matchups versus OTs, and possibly give him a two way stunt on most plays. Sounds like a winner to me!

I assume it would be all your favorite players like Johnson, Cody, and Okam.

I like the under defense but not as our base scheme.

It does seem so and the DE dropping into coverage on marios side alot makes you understand the barwin pick . Maybe someone should send this link to schein since he thinks barwin was a bad pick by the texans because he needed to go to a 3-4 team . He graded our draft the worst of the afc south !

I seriously doubt we drafted a DE to play on Mario's side, to drop into coverage.

I can’t wait to see what becomes of our defense. I’m curious on how diverse and flexible the playbook will be. Actually scratch that, now I remember Bush saying they were going to simplify the play calling. Analysis causes paralysis.

That's just the problem as it's well known that AJ & Cody aren't NTs and Okam qualifies as such only on paper, he hasn't played anywhere near the level the Texans were hoping for, but that's why he was taken very late in last years Draft (by the Texans).

Here's an interesting piece about the "under defense":
The 4-3 Under alignment confuses some fans as often the strong side linebacker covers the tight end on the strong side of the formation. This makes it look like a 5-2 at first glance but the exact technique spots are different. The Nose Tackle aligns in a gap to the strong side and not directly on the center. The defensive tackle is in a gap on the weak side in a 3 technique alignment. Both defensive ends play in a loose five technique spot. Slight variations of course exist in the shade technique alignments based upon the opponent and the formation. Pete Carroll explains most of them in great detail in his article. Fans were confused for example in 2006 when USC played a linebacker in a stand up 5 technique spot in the 4-3 under. Since that person Brian Cushing was a linebacker fans and the media jumped to the conclusion that USC was now playing a 3-4 defense but that was not the case. It was merely inability to recognize a 4-3 under alignment and the basic differences we’ll cover between the two gap responsibilities of a 3-4 and the one gap scheme of a 4-3. Anyway in a 4-3 under the strong safeties also play a pivotal role either filling down on run plays to help get eight men in the box or staying back in coverage on pass plays to play in a zone coverage or man to man as needed.

I think the Texans played multiple fronts in their 4-3.
I've seen them in the under front quite a bit.
For example, when Weaver lines up just outside the RT,
TJ is the Nose, Okoye is the 3Tech, and Mario is the rush man.
They would bring a OLB up to the LOS at times as a 9Tech.

According to the Carroll transcript, the best pass rusher would be on the other side which would be Mario, so it should be Smith and Cushing on one side and Mario on the other. If we're talking about a down where Smith goes inside, then it would be Cushing, Barwin on one side, Okoye and Smith, and Mario on the other side.
