Default Goodell outlines possible lengthened season

I KNOW there was a thread about this, but I couldn't find it. so sorry for starting a new one

Quote:
NEW YORK (AP)—NFL commissioner Roger Goodell can envision a Super Bowl played in mid-February if the league expands its regular-season schedule to 17 or 18 games.

Team owners are expected to get a proposal, perhaps as soon as next month, that would eliminate two preseason games and add one or two to the regular schedule. Goodell said Friday at a meeting with Associated Press Sports Editors such a format could push the Super Bowl back to President’s weekend.

“The idea has merit, I think,” he said Friday, referring to more regular-season games. “You are taking the quality and improving it, taking two meaningless games and making them meaningful within the 20-game framework.”

A Super Bowl that late in February could conflict with such other events as the Daytona 500, the NBA All-Star game and, every four years, the Winter Olympics. Then again, there is not bigger sporting event in America than the NFL’s title game.

Goodell outlined a scenario that would have two preseason games in August, followed by a dark week on Labor Day weekend, followed by the opening week. There still would be a bye for each team during the season and the week off between the conference championships and the Super Bowl. This year, that off weekend will be filled by the Pro Bowl.

Probably not too popular with the players but I'm all about lengthening the season.

Puh-lease stretch it out as long as you'd like, Roger.

I don't know about the Pro bowl thing, But I would see fans missing out on seeing some good players, being that I can't see a team that is preparing for the super bowl would allow their players to play a week before their big (meaningless) game, esp if they got hurt..

last year 5 arizona players and 3 Pittsburgh players
(7 starters)

Granted I know all other major sports play the All star game in the middle of the season, but they aren't as rough and tumble as NFL (hockey could be close)

(NFLPA executive director DeMaurice) Smith, who will travel to Houston, Dallas and New Orleans next week to begin a two-month series of meetings with players on every team, also argued that the NFL already has a rookie wage scale—something Goodell believes does not exist, but needs to implement. Smith said less than 4 percent of the monies dedicated to salaries goes to rookies, while Goodell pointed out that $600 million, including $400 million in guaranteed money, will be given to the 32 first-round picks in Saturday’s draft.

“Something is broken. We want the player who has performed on the NFL level to be compensated” Goodell said.

One thing the NFL is not doing is considering a Super Bowl in London. Goodell dismissed a report that “substantive talks” with officials in London were held.

“We have never looked at London or Mexico City as a site,” he said.
sorry mancunian

Wow the pro bowl the week before the Super Bowl?

Only if it's flag football.

That would be fine by me. Maybe flag football and a skills competition.

You might get more competition if the guys felt like they wouldn't be at huge risk for a possibly career ending injury on a meaningless game.

The pro bowl before the Super Bowl just isn't right. Why on earth would the two teams going to the Super Bowl even think about sending their players to the pro bowl? I just can't see this one flying.

Somebody better have a legitimate plan in place for adequate offseason/preseason player development/preparation/evaluation BEFORE the extension of the proposed season.

As a season ticket holder, nothing would make me happier than to not pay for 2 preseason games and make them real games instead. Much more "bang for the buck."
