Default Aaron Curry speculation

Florio linked to an article in Buffalo speculating about what the Bills may do if Aaron Curry slips down to them at #11. The universal perception of Curry is that his best position is a 4-3 OLB on the strong side, though he's good enough to play anywhere. Teams like KC (#3) and Cleveland (#5) that need LBs run the 3-4, so they may not want to use a high pick for a guy not playing his optimal position.

Admittedly, it's a long-shot that Curry is still on the board at 11, but, if it does happen: should we trade up with Buffalo to snag him? The 11 pick is 1250 on the chart. Our first (1050) and third (205) gives equivalent value, if you go by the chart.

As much as I'd hate to give up a third-rounder, this guy is perfect for us: fits an acknowledged need and would be supreme value outside the top 10.

Curry, J.Smith, and Monroe are the only three guys in my opinoin who are 100% locks for the top ten so I think this has a zero percent chance of happening.

But to answer your question...yes. I would trade up to #11 to snag him.

As great as Curry is projected to be, I would not trade a 3rd for him. IMO Raji is the only trade up and I was willing to offer a 4. I do not expect that to be taken. I just see us trading down and getting a solid player. 2nd, third and mid 4th rounds offer some tantalyzing players. I will be stunned if Curry drops out of top 10.

In any event, here's the article.

http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2009/0...r-bills-at-11/

And, then here's another question, if Curry slips past #6, do we offer Oakland our first and second picks? That would be a pure 1500 for 1500 swap. Closer call, in my mind: we've had only one second round pick since 2003, so I can't stand the thought of losing another one. And the rookie contract would be pretty onerous. But if OLB is indeed a spot where we can make an upgrade with a guy like Matthews, why not go get the very best one?

No way Curry makes it out of the top 5 and if he does, look for a smart team like the Patriots to come running in and sweep him up before the rest of the league knows what hit them.

If he's there at 11, I'm on the phone. Too much of an upgrade not to move up and nab him.

If the Pats traded up for him, I think I would die a little bit. Then they would get Barwin in the 2nd and Levitre in the 3rd. All players I like in those rounds.

Totally agreed. Curry will be a franchise LB for years and years. If you have a shot at getting a guy like an Urlacher, Harrison, Brooks, Suggs, or Mayo type of LB then you've got to do it. Those types of LB"s do to much for your defense.

Yep. You know how this team will rip your heart out though. It'll be a flash back like when Willis and Okoye were both there and we passed P-Will, Curry will fall and we'll take Matthews or Peria instead.

I wouldn't be surprised by any of that Bull. Man, I hated how we passed on Willis. The guy had even better of a rookie season than Demeco did. He'll be a beast for years and years. Curry is in his same type of mold as a LB.

My buddy and I were all over Willis for 3 months leading up to the draft, and now we have a memorial service yearly before the draft at what could have been. Very sad.

As much as I agree that another year of not having a 2nd would stink I would make that deal. We have a three and two fours to grab some quality guys and Curry could make an entire draft a success instantly.

Nah, we can't go another season without a 2nd round pick in my opinion. Curry wouldn't make us SB bound, so I wouldn't want us to do that. We need that 2nd rounder man. I'd have no problem giving up a 3rd to do it though, or maybe both 4th's.

Hmm. I sincerely doubt Curry falls to #11. However, in the unlikely event he does, I would be willing to give up our 3rd rounder to trade up for him. He's an everydown LB that wouldn't leave the field. He and Demeco would be an outstanding duo. He's one of the few players that would make our front 7 and back 7 better at the same time.

I agree he wouldn't make us SB bound but with him and the other additions we have made this offseason I think our defense could at least be middle of the pack from the get go. That might be enough for us to sneak into the playoffs. Plus you get to pencil him in at LB for the next decade and not really worry about it. Now if we could do it for a three or two fours I would be ecstatic but I have a hard time believing a team would pass him up for that or not be able to find a better deal from another team. In any case this is probably all just a pipe-dream.

Good post, and like you i don't think we could pull it off for a 3rd and or two 4th's either. Someone else would out bid us there.

He might be worth giving up a 2nd rounder for, but man after not having them for the last two seasons, I want to keep our 2nd rounder this year and provide more depth at a lot of positions. We could still get a great player in the 2nd round as well as the 1st round. We're just not a good enough team yet to where we can be trading up in the draft and give up our 2nd rounder again. Maybe next year we'll be in a position to do something like that.

Personally I really like Mealuage as well and would love for us to draft him and move Demeco over but that would be a pipe dream as well that won't happen. Neither of these scenarios are likely to happen like you say.

Its really hard sometimes not to pile on Casserly, I was going to just let this go but since someone posted a thread about this I have to respond.

For those who haven't watched Path to the Draft or do not subscribe to NFL Network just last Friday Casserly did his Top 10 Mock draft & he had Curry slipping down to #10 (San Francisco) for similar reasons (same sources)? now just yesterday he switches gears & says he thinks that Detroit has a deal with Curry to go #1 if a contract cannot be hammered out with Matthew Stafford. Which is it? if Curry is worth the #1 overall selection how do you have him sliding to #10 can't have it both ways, maybe he is bi-polar

Because the rumor of the day keeps Casserly's name out there. Just like the nincapoop web site that announced all those players had failed tests. Bad PR is better than no PR I guess.
