Are the Lions Just Being the Lions.........

.......by not choosing and locking in their #1 pick early (if they do not have intentions of trading or sliding out of that pick)? Strategy and judgement have never been their strong points.

Well, the Dolphins locked up Jake Long early last year but, correct me if I'm wrong, I don't recall that being the norm.

I am glad that they haven't cemented who the pick is yet.

I don't have much football excitement to cling to at present. Not knowing who's career is going to be dashed by being the Lions no. 1 pick is one of those things that keeps life interesting right now......

I would suspect that the only leak that comes out of the Lions camp is that they're going to screw up the pick.......again.

If they pick Sanchez, he'll bomb and Stafford will be a stud. If the pick Stafford, he'll bomb and Sanchez will be a stud.

Or, if they pick a tackle, he'll no doubt show up unmotivated, out of shape, and never reach his potential.

Maybe they should just draft a WR instead.

Yeh, they tried that and that certainly worked out for them, didn't it? Remember Charles Rogers? :

Rogers was drafted second overall after Carson Palmer in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.

Rogers caught 22 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns during his first five games of the 2003 season, before breaking his collarbone while practicing a speed drill with Dré Bly, leaving him out for the season. He was expected to come back, however, in the third play of the 2004 season, Rogers suffered another broken collarbone, and was once again out for the season.

During the 2005 season, Rogers was suspended 4 games for a third violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy. As a result of this violation, the Lions filed a grievance, claiming that his drug suspension violated a clause in his contract, which would mean Rogers would be obligated to return $10 million of the $14.2 million the Lions gave him in bonuses. The Detroit Free Press would later report that Rogers failed drug tests each year while at Michigan State. Citing Lions chief operating officer Tom Lewand, a report Oct. 9, 2008 stated that Rogers must repay the team around $8.5 million.[2]

Upon his return from suspension, despite the fact that Rogers was deemed healthy, he played only nine games, with three starts, and was declared inactive for four games. He caught 14 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown.

On September 2, 2006, Rogers was released by the Lions. According to Lion coach Rod Marinelli, "We picked the men that are right for this football team. It's behind us. I wish him the very best. We just move on."[3]

After his release, Rogers worked out for the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006, all of whom passed. Reportedly, Rogers worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs in January 2007 and flopped the workout by running a 40-time of 4.8, which was a decline from the 4.28 that he ran at his pro day four years prior (he did not run at the souting combine).

Rogers has not made any recent attempts to join a football team. The NFLPA has yet to receive his retirement papers.

He was arrested in September 2008 and charged with assault and battery of a female acquaintance. In December 2008, Rogers was sentenced to attend sobriety court or face jailtime after violating his probation. He tested positive for vicodin. In March 2009, Rogers was jailed for violating probation.

There's still plenty of time to get one of the three locked up. I read somewhere (TIFWIW) that they're trying to get Stafford locked up now. If they can't come to an agreement before the draft they were going to move on to the next prospect.

I heard something similar, and apparently Stafford was telling former Georgia teammates that the Lions taking him number 1 was a sure thing.

I think Stafford is head and shoulders a better QB then Sanchez. I just see Matt Leinart 2.0 with Sanchez. Guy who has ok measureables and played with top notch talent, will struggle in pros with less overall talent. IMO they aren't going to make leaps and bounds in the WL catergory. Next year will be a much better year to take a 1st round QB and I have a feeling they'll be picking around the top 5 again next year.

If I were the Lions I'd Take whichever LT you grade out as best at LT, best defensive player at 20, then I'd solidify the line with the first second round pick. Culpepper isn't a long term solution but anyone will make a good dummy behind that line, just need them upright long enough to get the ball to Johnson. I think Schwartz has the ability to put medicore talent in good position to succeed. They could roll the dice and hope things end up like Atlanta did , I just don't think Stafford anywhere near what Matt Ryan was coming out of BC. I'd take a guy like Chase Coffman out of Missouri in the third to give Culpepper a good outlet target to hit.

The Lions will sign Stafford, Monroe or Smith before the draft. There's no reason at all to come out with anything right now. It will most likely be similar to the 2006 draft with Mario.

I sure hope they sit him for a few games or even the whole year. He throws frozen ropes and has a cannon, but when it comes to a fade you need a receiver that resembles Mr. Fantastic to catch the ball. He still has tons to learn.
