I can't think of a past 1st round pick who has accomplished less in 4 seasons than Matthews. You can make a case that Matt Jones had zero experience for the job he was drafted for. But, Jones was a decent college QB. Matthews was a special teamer for 3 years prior to playing a season as a standup DE. He has minimal experience at LB.

I tried to make this point a while back....with the additional teams switching 3-4 in the NFL...and the colleges covering the spread...just where the heck are our 4-3 OLBs supposed to come from Lucky ?

DE elephants in college or big SS who can convert. And it's not going to get any better next draft either. And just maybe his off season work is for real and we get something similar to Wilbur Marshal. And McClain wouldn't be putting this out there if he weren't getting sources saying that he is worth the pick. I'm not Pollyanna enough to not realize he sees the print value in the Mathews angle...but I also know he wouldn't be throwing out the Mathews smoke unless he had something more than just he feelings. His scout sources are telling him what he knows.

The thing about Matthews is that we know he can make two positions stronger - OLB and Special Teams kick coverage. We didn't have a good coverage team last year. Now that's during his rookie season. I think he comes to the perfect fit because he doesn't have to come in right away. He can learn the game first. When I say he doesn't have to come in right away I mean he can come in mid to late season like Adibi did. We all know how that worked out.

After the Texans signed left defensive end Antonio Smith in free agency, they can turn their attention to outside linebacker or defensive tackle in the first round. Mississippi's Peria Jerry would be a nice addition at tackle, but Matthews can do so many things that he's more valuable in this spot. He's been on the rise since the Senior Bowl. He was terrific at the combine, running 4.62 in the 40, including an incredible 1.49 for the first 10 yards.[/COLOR="Blue"] He's 6-3, 245 and can play the strong or weak side.

He works out again, although he doesn't have to because of his excellent combine numbers, April first.

YQW. I love the guy. My greatest fear is we do another Derrick Johnson....move down too far and miss him. He gets Adibi through a sixteen game season.

it's not like it hurt us. He has been about as productive as the other Johnson. Travis.

Whatever this method they used to compile the results is, it sucks. According to it, Malcom Jenkins will not be taken in the first round.

If Raji falls close to them they'll move up for him. Macklin.....has a ways to go to be a front line guy...sorry, JMHO. I wouldn't be surprised if he fell. If raw speed and explosion was all it took , Mathis would still be on the roster and Jacoby Jones would of unseated Walter already.

I'm pretty sure Maclin is a little more polished than Jacoby Jones and Jerome Mathis. The only thing Jones and Mathis have in common with him is their speed. This guy put up great #s every year in division 1 football. Is he a #1.....probably not out of the box, but he can be a #2 guy who stretches the field and grows into a #1 guy over time (i.e. Reggie Wayne) easily.

He's not Jacoby Jones or Jerome Mathis...he's a legit receiver, granted probably not a #1 guy yet, but even if he doesn't become one......a #2 guy in the mid first round isn't a bad grab either.

Who cares if he has the same body type as Andre Davis, that really doesn't mean much. Reggie Wayne is listed at 6'0 and 198 pounds.....Maclin is listed at 6'1 and 200 pounds, not much of a difference.

As far as points A. and B., these points are becoming null and void, because the success of the "spread offense" has become so successful in college football that the "pro style" offense is dying in college football....the teams that run it now are few and far between (so everybody has those knocks) and not only is the "spread" taking over college football it's also taking over the NFL. It's the new hot thing in the NFL and more and more teams are starting to go to spread packages. (Patriots have been running it for a couple of years now and both the Pats and Indy used it when their QBs put up historic #s) We saw just a glimspe of it with the "wild cat offense".

Teams/scouts that just write off players because the "played in the spread" and thought they can't get off the line, or run through tackles are now going to miss out on prospects like Steve Slaton and DeSean Jackson. NFL scouts can no longer afford to do that. These "spread offense" schools are starting to recruit top notch talent that can no longer be ignored......just look at the #1 rated WR in this draft, classic spread offense WR.
