Default blog:The Ten Best Houston Texans of All Time (sorta)

http://houston.about.com/b/2009/03/2...time-sorta.htm

Quote:
Me, I'm a Big Sports Guy - I used to assume that all guys were inherently Big Sports Guys, but my male cousin-in-law, the dancer, assured me this was an incorrect ideology - and though basketball is my favorite sport, football is a close second. Naturally, I've grown terribly partial to our city's pro team: the Houston Texans.

Now, I try to sit down and watch as much of their weekly games as I can, but with my boys running around that usually equates to about 8 minutes of real-time action per game. As such, I've taken to following the team like any good, hard-working American: by reading numerous football-related websites during the work day.

Of all of the Texans websites/blogs that I read, I'd be lying if I said that the unforgiving DGDB&D (formerly Da Good, Da Bad, & DeMeco) wasn't my favorite. So when Matt Campbell, the site's founder, agreed to compile a list of the Ten Greatest Houston Texans of All Time exlusively for this here site, I was stoked.

Anyone that's familiar with Campbell's site knows that there's a certain amount of, er, shall we say "lack of sensitivity," that goes along with his coverage (so if you click over, know that it can be a bit PG-13 at times) but his expertise in the area is absolutely unquestioned. His Texans-related writing has been featured on ESPN.com, NBCSports.com, USAToday.com and Deadspin.com, among others.

At any rate, enough with all the hubbub, here's the list. If you feel like there was an egregious error made in its compilation, feel free to chop it up in the comments section. Know that Campbell will likely respond, and it probably won't be to tell you that you're super smart.

the list

I hate the fact that Matt Stevens was mentioned IN ANY SENSE on a top 10 players list.

Jay "freaking" Foreman!!! and then the line...

Did somebody forget about Mr. Texan himself, Chester Pitts?

Hell I'd put Kris Brown above Foreman as well, but the fact that he forget about Chester Pitts makes him lose credibility.

Solid list and a tough one to make considering how we've been around for such a short time.

My only problem with that list is that Chester Pitts didn't make the top 10. He's been an ironman starting every game the Texans have ever played. He should make it at least over Jay Foreman.

I'll make my own.

Quote:
I didn't like Jay Foreman being included, so I'll make my own list.

10. Derrick Armstrong- Screw the numbers, I liked the guy.

9. Vonta Leach- A fullback!?!? Yes. Moran Norris was also a great FB, but didn't hit as hard, catch as well, or run as well as Leach. Leach was named a Pro-Bowl alternate, but you'd struggle to name a better fullback. Or at least any other fullback. Leach is a great blocker, eats up linebackers, and loves to lower his head and punish anyone who dares challenge him when he has the ball.

8. Domanick Davis- To this day, the only Texans jersey I've ever owned. Davis, at one point, was one of the better all-around running backs in the league. For a while, he WAS the Texans offense. Just a few years ago, Andre Johnson wasn't as good as he is now, we had a super model at QB, and the offense just wasn't good. However, that didn't stop Davis as he was a Fantasy Football all-star.
Quote:

Honorable Mention:

Steve Slaton- A hell of a steal as a 3rd round pick, Slaton is already an elite running back...or not. Slaton led all rookies in rushing, ahead of the much more publicized Chris Johnson, but the fact remains that he has only had one good season with the Texans. It's only a matter of time before he challenges DeMeco for the top spot behind AJ on this list.

Gary Walker- With Aaron Glenn, the first Texans to make the Pro Bowl. His time with the Texans came at the twilight of his career, but he still had a few good seasons with the Texans.

Matt Schaub- Love him or hate him, he's the best QB to wear a Texans uniform. His 400 yards in the Frozen Tundra at Green Bay says a lot of the controversial Schaub, as he came back from a knee injury in negative degree weather.

Kevin Walter- A solid #2 receiver, has quickly become a big part of the Texans offense.

I would switch D-Rob and Glenn, replace Wong with Kris Brown, and Foreman with Chester Pitts.

Kris Brown would have to be top 5 on the list and I apologize for forgetting him. He's the only Texan we could always count on, whether it was to make a game winning FG or make sure we were in position to draft Mario

Pitts should be higher than DDW and Wong as well. 3 players from the 06 draft, and could be 4 if Winston steps up. Not a bad draft class.

I would change spots 9 & 10 to Pitts and Brown. I really do like Leach's game and wished they had his jersey because I would buy it.

I forgot all about Brown. He should be pretty damn high. He is one of the best Texans of all time.

I've been watching games this week on NFLGameRewind and D-Rob doesn't look all that great. Injured or not, he got beat worse than Reeves.

Speaking of which, at one point in the Titans game in Houston, one of the commentators calles Reeves "Jackass...err...Jacques Reeves"

After some thinking here is my list for top 10 all time Texans:

1) Andre Johnson: I think he's the consensus # 1 at this point.

2) Mario Williams: A much better face of the franchise than Carr and is our symbol for a new era of Texans football.

3) DeMeco Ryans: Most productive LBer in team history.

4) Kris Brown: One of the best kickers in the league and the most reliable Texan in franchise history.

5) Aaron Glenn: The only shutdown CB in team history.

6) Dunta Robinson: Heart and soul of the current defense, p4p one of the hardest hitters in the NFL.

7) Domanick Davis/Williams: Our 1st thousand yard RB and a guy who did whatever we asked of him before his career ended due to injury.

8) Chester Pitts: Has started every game in team history and is a solid player.

9) Jamie Sharper: Solid LBer while he was here, one of the few consistent players on the early Texan teams.

10) Owen Daniels: The most underrated TE in the league.

Some may wonder why I only added 3 players who were only here during the Capers era and i'll tell you, "Repeat that question and think really hard why that might be..."

Lots of young players (3 players with only 3 NFL seasons) but we're a young franchise so it balances out. I'm sure Kevin Walter, Erik Winston, Steve Slaton, Vonta Leach, and other productive Texans will leapfrog the old guard after another productive year or two in the league.

I would give Aaron Glenn some props and make him 3rd. He was great here and shouldnt have been shown the door as early as he was.
