Punt Blocking Specialists - Houston Texans Message Board & Forum

Just looking at some of the teams that were in the playoffs and most of them blocked a few punts. I know they are hard to come by but alot of teams have a guy that comes up with one or two a season. It's been 2003 when Ramon Walker blocked a punt and FG against the Patriots and forced OT. We haven't blocked anything since? Who is our best guy for the job and is there a FA or guy in the draft that could help with this?

I think Michael Boulware blocked at an extra point for us. Where he's at!?

Yeah... But how many teams have a punter that can pick up a first down running the ball?!?!?!

Ah yes, The Turk - Punter with 1/4th RB in him.

I do recall Bubba McDowell as being our punt block specialist back in the Oiler days.

I think you got your stats backwards. Of the 12 teams making the playoffs in 2008, none of them had more than one blocked punt (6 of them had one, and 6 of them had zero). On the other hand, Carolina had 3 of their own punts blocked, and Atlanta had 2.

There were only thirteen blocked punts in the entire 2008 regular season, and 5 of them were against the Panthers or Falcons. It's not a significant statistic.

With Jacoby fielding punts I doubt that we tried to block too many.

Duane Brown was a kick blocking machine in college, so I don't know. Don't really thinks it's that big of a deal really. I'd be more concerned about our punt returner securing the ball.

Maybe we should draft a punt blocker in the 1st round. Then maybe a long snapper in the 2nd.

I know alot of people are poking fun at this because I asked who is available in FA and Draft to HELP with this. It is pretty funny but seriously, are we looking at that as an asset at all.

I do recall that when Bubba McDowell and even a guy named Mike Dumas were drafted by The Oilers, they quickly pointed to their ability to block punts and kicks. I'm just kind of noticing that we haven't acquired or drafted anyone with that kind of stuff in their history and I think it needs to be something to consider.
