With the possible (likely IMO) trade of Sage to the Vikings, do you look to draft a young QB this year? Do you strictly look to sign a veteran? Do you hope/think that any of our other QB's on the roster could be our backup?
Here is my thinking: I think we can make due for a year with Nall and Gray (I think he is still with us). I think it is time to draft a developmental QB, but I do not feel comfortable making any rookie QB our backup. Here is a quick breakdown of where some notable QB's are projected to go (my projections): Mark Sanchez - top 5 Matthew Stafford - top 20 Pat White - Middle to late second round Josh Freeman - Late second to early third (If we take this trash, I will go on a killing spree, FYI) Nate Davis - Middle of the third round Rhett Bomar - Early 4th-middle 4th Hunter Cantwell - Mid 5th Cullen Harper - Late 5th Stephen McGee - Early 6th Curtis Painter - Early 6th Rudy Carpenter - Mid 6th It is a fairly unimpressive group overall, but there are some gems. Pat White has been tearing up everything and everyone, and has likely moved into the bottom third of the second round. I'm going to assume that everyone is comfortable with passing on a QB in the first round, by the way. Josh Freeman is a joke of a QB - his winningest team: 7-6. Now, we get to the interesting players, the "developmental" picks. This is where you take a toolsey QB who has had success but isn't getting big time attention. Are you comfortable with using a 3rd round draft pick on Nate Davis? Or a 4th on Rhett Bomar? I hope by now that we have learned our lesson with the Alex Brink's of the draft, so I do worry about waiting too long to find a prospect. I'm starting to like Nate Davis in the third round. It is about fair value, and we (Texans - specifically McNair) have shown the willingness to draft a developmental QB early (Ragone). I like Davis because he has good size at 6'2, weighing in at a robust 226. He really, really, really should have stayed in school for another year. He has fringe first round talent stored inside, but he showed enough this past season to warrant a pick. He has a very strong arm that he showed off while rolling out of the pocket (Ball St. moved him out of the pocket a lot last year). He has slightly above average footwork, but that is coachable, and that is a good thing. He looked aware of the pocket in the few games I saw, and a little bit of coaching will help him with an initial false step. He really knows how to step into his throws, and he can throw the "frozen rope" pass. He will need to work on his reads (Ball St., believe it or not, did not run a complex offensive system) and his timing with NFL WR's. He has NFL starter potential, and that is fairly easy to project. He isn't ready now, but he has everything you look for in a middle round QB. I think he could be the answer to our back-up QB spot and could push Schaub down the road for the starting gig. What are your thoughts/opinions on this matter (not just Davis). What are you looking to do or not do with QB's this year?

If we trade Sage and we don't bring in a FA QB then I am looking at Bomar.
I have him as my #72 overall prospect so if he is there for our pick in the 3rd round then I could get behind that pick. He has the size, mobility, and arm to be a starter in the NFL. He is a little bit too confident in his arm at this point and goes for the home run a little bit too often, but I think that with some good coaching he can be a steal in this draft. If he was coming out of Oklahoma instead of Sam Houston St then he would be going in the first round. |

I like Bomar in the 4th. I would even consider in the 3rd, depending how things shape up.

Give up our whole draft for VY ... JK .
I'd say Davis or the Aggie in that order looking in the 4th and on .

McGee may move up in the draft..he had a pretty good combine...I think the Texans will target a QB(#2 Backup) in this draft. Even if Sage were to stay w/ us this season, we'll likely lose him after the 09 season. If we were to pick a QB in the early rounds that would negate our initial plan to go '"D", therefore I'm all about McGee in round 5/6.

Just a couple of quick points,
1. Gray is backing up Manning in Indy. 2. McNair hasn't shown anything about picking anyone. He's not Jerry Jones and I don't think he's trying to tell Smith who to pick or where to pick them or what to pay them. I think we're going to trade Sage. And I think we're going to target Pat White. I don't know why I think that but I do. I'm hoping we bring Boyd back but I think they're going to grab some FA QB for a look-see. |

The Utes' Brian Johnson might be an UDFA due to his size.
Even though they play the spread and zone read with him mostly in the shotgun, I think the guy's short game is worth looking at. He knows how to use all the weapons on the team. I like Boyd, but I think his passing game is not up to NFL standard. I'd rather take a longer look at Brinks. |

Kubiak was real high on Brinks, don't know if that changed or not?
Wonder if Jake Plummer is interested in coming out of retirement? Texas A&M's Stephen McGee looks decent but can't see Texans using that 4th they are getting for Sage then turning around & giving it right back? Brett Farve could change his mind

I like that idea also, but doubt he gets out of the second.

I'm not spending a draft pick on a QB unless he can help the team in other ways....
Draft Pat White and bring in a veteran. We can Groom White to be the back-up QB but in the meanwhile he can contribute on special teams and on offense so we can actually carry three QB's without jepordizing the roster spots. If we trade Jacoby that makes this even more possible. |

If Brink is not our #2 why would we draft a QB? How would we carry Schaub, Veteran Backup QB, Brink, and a Rookie QB? We would have to carry 3 on the roster, and try to practice squad the other one.
I am glad that someone finally called Freeman what he is. Trash. He is an over hyped JaMarcus Russell wanna be. And Stephen McGee? Really? I would vomit if we took that kid higher than 6-7th round. Rhett Bomar gets my vote in the 4th if we take a QB at all. We will have 8 draft picks if Sage goes. 1 Defensive End 2 Safety 3 Guard 4 D Tackle 4 Running Back 5 Linebacker 6 Wide Receiver 7 Linebacker Personally I think we carry 3 QB's this year. Schaub, Brink and bring in a vet. Unless Bomar falls to us in the 4th, or White to us in the 3rd (Aint gonna happen) then we will get a QB another day.

Charles Davis apparently thinks we go QB....early.
http://www.nfl.com/combine/story?id=...s&confirm=true Team Pick Analysis 15. Houston Texans Mark Sanchez QB, USC A surprise for a team with Matt Schaub, but there is talk Sage Rosenfels could be on the move. Terrible.

I could have told you Charles Davis is a fool before I even read this.

I'd add Tom Brandstater to that list as a mid 4th - early 5th round pick. From the little I've seen and read about him, he's got a decent arm, good size, failry accurate and Kubiak can teach him the rest. I read that he did well at the Combine so he might be moving up.

My guess....the extra fourth is for a move up or they're going to take Pat White or Stephen Mcgee in the fourth....bring in a FA vet. Let the QBs fight it out in the summer. That's what they always do.

I hope they sign a FA vet for a year and pick up someone like Bomar or...McGee in the fourth. As a UT fan McGee is a royal pain in the ass. For everything that Franchione did to the kid he did as told and didn't ask questions. Guy has always been a gamer... I like that.

But he is a guy that will go out there and fight for you. If he can tone it down a notch and keep his head in the game, then I think he can be a real catch. I said this in another thread and I really believe it: He looks like one of those guys that can hang around the NFL for a long time as a good backup QB. As a prospect, I think he is very comparable to Charlie Batch, and that ain't a bad thing for a guy that will probably go 4th-5th round. |
