How can they afford to sign Gross and franchise Peppers?

I read that they saved eight or nine million by guaranteeing a big chunk of Chris Gamble's contract, which they can spread out over the next few years. They'll probably have to make a cut or three along the way, too. This Gantt guy says that cap room is not much of an issue at all.

Like Mailman stated, Peppers has no desire to play in Carolina. He will be traded, and recieve compensation in return.

He's not worth 2 1st's, not that anybody is implying that he is. Also Peppers can now tell any team that wants him, that if Carolina was willing to offer me 17 million for a year, why aren't you?
I don't think he gets trade at this point. How many taggeed players have been traded in NFL history? I can only recall 1. |

Carolina may not get top dollar for the trade, but Peppers will get top dollar in his contract. |

Considering the importance of having an impact player at his position, I think there are teams who would be willing to pay the man. See the Vikings, Jared Allen.

Allen was 25 (at the time of the trade), not Peppers' 30 (today is his birthday); slight difference, no?

Peppers turned 29 last month. I really don't think there's a huge difference because there are ample examples of stud DEs who played well into their thirties.

If a team traded for him wouldn't they have to give him a new contract that isn't a 17 Million dollar one. If not, I don't see any team having any interest in paying anyone money like that. They would be crazy. Maybe the Raiders, but that is about it.

FWIW it's probably not *all* about the money or else he would've signed a new contract with the Panthers. Last edited by Mailman; 02-19-2009 at 02:25 PM. |

A second team negotiates an offer sheet. Either Peppers signs that and Carolina has 7 days to match or if they decline they get two 1sts, or the 2nd team goes to Carolina and tries to negotiate a lessor compensation while the offer sheet is in place but un-signed. Either way, a deal with the second team is what starts the ball rolling.

I'm sure Gross is thanking Peppers for the way he has handled his status with the Panthers. Gross had to figure they would concentrate on working out a contract with him pretty quick, and be forced to tag Peppers.
