Default The NFL in Texas: 2 teams, 2 directions

Quote:
This Sunday, Lone Star football fans from El Paso to Texarkana will tune into Super Bowl XLIII. And for the thirteenth straight year, we will watch two teams from other states play in the NFL’s premier event.

This current drought now matches the longest period in Super Bowl history without a Texas entry; the other dry spell being the stretch from 1979-1992.

There is good news, however.

I'll be very happy when the Texans are in the Super Bowl. But before we gloat over the supposed momentum shift between Houston and Dallas, remember this. The Cowboys disappointing 9-7 record this past season would be a franchise best for the Texans.

Rick Smith didn't draft Andre Johnson the last time I checked.

I like Gary Kubiak and I think he can be a very good coach in this league, but I'd like to see more growth as a head coach and results before I call him one...

and

I also like Rick Smith and think he is a bright young guy, but I would like to see more drafts from him, before I declare him the next great young G.M.

I agree that the Cowboys are headed down the tube (once the Parcells found talent starts to disappear) with the spineless head coach that Dallas has, they no longer have anybody to challenge Jones from making horrible decisions. (like the pickup of Tank, Pacman, and giving up a crap load of picks for Roy Williams)

Having said that though, that doesn't mean Houston is just going to jump up and be the savior of this state......Houston hasn't earned that kind of praise yet. Are they doing some good things......yes, but we are going into season #8 and still haven't had a winning season yet. It's a little premature to start punching super bowl tickets right now.

I agree with your thoughts regarding Gary Kubiak, I'd also like to see alot more growth from him as a head coach. Specifically in the areas a player personnel and game management/clock management. He needs to get alot better and quick. Hopefully his butt is on the hotseat this year.

Rick Smith I think is doing a very good job as well, but I'd like to see him do a better job in free agency and in the draft before declaring him the next great GM of the NFL.

Interesting take. I'll start with the Cowboys. Run the ball more.

As for the Texans I agree we have something good brewing here and for us to take that next step it's going to have to be Kubiak and his staff making a big leap this coming year. I hope that he can trust Young Shannahan to take over on the offensive play calling and with more oversight over the O in general that will allow Kubiak to evolve into a more complete HC.

Really hope that Bush is the guy for our defense because Kubiak's career with the Texans could be on the line. IF very big IF Bush and the rest of the staff can get this defense in the top half of the league along with a top 5 offense we could be trouble for a LOT of teams. Couple that with what could be a good schedule and we might have a special season next year. This without a doubt in my mind is the biggest offseason in Texans history.

Whatever. At least the Cowpatties can't lay claim to being the first to win 6 super bowls. I'd have hated that. The Cowturds and the Texans are headed in different directions, the Cowpies down and the Texans up. But, as has been pointed out, at this stage of the game, they still have a better record than us. I hope that changes in 2009.

I hate that dipsh*t team with the stars on the helmuts.

The ONLY reason this past SB was not a total disappointment to me. I definitely wanted the Cards to pull it off, but, I have to admit I had a little smile on my face when the game was over. Who can lay claim to being "America's team" now?? I was hoping the Niners would beat the CBs to that 6th SB title, but, I'll settle for the Steele men. (no offense to the fine members of this board who have CB blood running through their veins.)

Thank you. Somebody needed to put things in perspective here because it's really silly to get heady about 2 consecutive .500 seasons.

No doubt in my mind this is the key. I expect to see alot of the strange/poor game time decisions to improve assuming that Shannahan is able to hold his own. I recognize that Kubiak will still remain heavy handed in the playbook while Kyle gets more and more experience but it will be key that Kubiak won't have to spend as much time with his head buried in the play card during the game. The difference in his perspective should be substantial. Being able to really watch the game develop should allow him to make alot more analytical decisions and less "gut" decisions. I think his progress as a HC ties in directly to Shannahan's progress as a OC.

I agree. Another thing that will help his game management this year is the potential that our defense will make a stop on 3rd and 12. That should help his decision-making as well!

There are a few Cowboy fans on this board that are very cool people and are long time members here.

I don't know about a Super Bowl but I do agree that the Texans are trending upwards and the Cowboys look to be primed for a fall. And the draft is going to be slim pickens in 2009 because they shot their load trading for a VERY unmotivated and underperforming Roy Williams. Then you have Mr. Choke himself Tony Romo at the helm and with that you know you are screwed too.

Their best chance at the Super Bowl was in 2006 under Parcells and Romo had to choke the snap on the chip shot field goal to win it. Ever since then they have lost that swagger. They should have never gotten rid of Parcells. His FG kickers were horrible and lost so many games for them yet they still almost advanced but Romo had to choke. Parcells wasn't the problem and I guarantee you they dont trade a 1st and a 2nd? for Roy WIlliams if Bill is still at Valley Ranch.

I give Jones a lot of credit for winning but he hasn't won since he had a strong personality as his Head Coach. He needs to get back to that and get away from teh Wade Phillips carebear coaching philosophy.

Then you sign Dan Reeves as a consultant? Really? Dan Reeves. The same Dan Reeves that said the Texans should stay the course with Carr. A move that has crippled our franchise's development even to this day. Really? Jones needs to back away from the plastic surgeon and stay the hell off the football field and let more qualified football personnel make the moves. Jerry probably does know as much about football as most NFL owners but he doesn't know enough to be qualified to make all decisions especially personnel and building a team. He can squeeze a nickel out of a turnip but he needs to stick with the marketing and the sponsorship/licensing deals because that is something he is good at. Its obvious he can not build a winner without strong leadership at HC.
