Default Meeks Resigns

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/...rom-the-colts/

A day after word broke that the Colts would be parting ways with defensive coordinator Ron Meeks, Meeks has taken the iniative by resigning.

The news comes via a two-sentence press release titled “Colts Announce Staff Change”: “Ron Meeks has resigned as defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts, the club announced today. Meeks served in this capacity with the club since 2002.”

That’s it. No “he’s going to spend more time with his family.” No “we thank him for his contributions and wish him well in his future endeavors.” Not even a “don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.”

As we heard it on Monday, the Colts advised Meeks that his services wouldn’t be retained, and the Colts opted to give him time to find another job before cutting the cord. After all, it’s typically easier to find a job when you have a job.

But Meeks has decided to end the relationship before the Colts would or could pull the trigger.

And so, in a week since Tony Dungy retired and Jim Caldwell took the wheel, the Colts have shed two of their three coordinators.

We’ve got a feeling that, if Colts fans had realized there was going to be so much turnover on the staff, they would have simply preferred a new head coach with no prior ties to the franchise.

Wow its sucks to be Colts fans right now, as I see them not having that great of a year next year.

Did not see that coming. Pretty much everyone figured he was the guy that was going to be the glue defensively now that Dungy has moved on. I wonder if they alter their scheme much in the coming years.

I refuse to feel bad for any team that has won a Super Bowl in the last 10 years. I would certainly take a bad year next year for a Super Bowl Champion Texans poster, shirt, hat, newspaper, etc. hanging up in my room.

Long as Manning is a the helm, Freeney and Mathis are at DE, and Polian is running the drafts I'd expect them to compete for the division title and a playoff spot.

Didn't see Meeks leaving but I'd be incredibly sick if they decided to go after McDermott.

Weird days in Indy. I am not predicting a sudden drop off purely because of Peyton (as much as I dislike his whiner butt), but when you add the firings to:

Mortensen also reported on Sunday that G.M. Bill Polian had to persuade offensive coordinator Tom Moore and offensive line coach Howard Mudd not to retire.
It seems the new coach and Dungy were not on the same page.

it's easy to say that now, but when you win one, you become irate in the following years when the team can't get back to that level, or even close. see: Bucs fans

Oh hellz no! I'm giddy as a dang schoolgirl!

I see this as an opportunity to start building a real defense. If nothing else, it's hope.

"The move sets up new coach Jim Caldwell to hire a top defensive assistant who could lead the team away from the Tampa 2 defense that Tony Dungy was known for and look to add some size to a team that's put a premium on speed on defense."

Like I said, I doubt it happens overnight but it looks like there will be changes (on defense at least) in Indy. Of course they could go and hire another T2 guy, but that seems unlikely to me.

I don't know about that. Sure you want to continue winning; there is no doubt about that. But the longing for a Super Bowl at least subsides a bit when you finally win one. I've been living off the Rockets Championships for over 10 years now. Do I want them to win again? Hell yeah! But if I had the option of choosing a franchise to win the big one, it's be one of the teams that hasn't won a championship yet: Texans and Astros.
