Gosselin regrades the draft

As he always does, Rick Gosselin regrades the draft every January. If you have ever heard him interviewed about the draft, you would quickly hear that he hates grading a draft the Monday after it finishes, but since draft grades sell papers his employer forces him to. In response to this Gosselin regrades the draft at the end of each season.

April grade: C | January grade: B

The Texans hit a pair of home runs in first-round LT Duane Brown and third-round RB Steve Slaton. Brown started 16 games and Slaton 15. Slaton strung together three consecutive 100-yard rushing games in December. Fourth-round LB Xavier Adibi also started some games.

The most interesting thing here for me is the numbr of teams that don't have significant impact from their rookies.

His draft grades seem miscalculated. He grades a teams draft based on how many rookies are starters. For crummy teams like the Lions and Chiefs ,this means they get great grades no matter how well their rookies perform. Sure Detroit started 7 rookies or whatever it was, but they won 0 games.

A team like Baltimore may have only really scored highly with their first rounder, but they scored so highly that they went from top 10 to AFC Championship. That should count for something

They had two 1st round picks , it better be an A+ . That being said , I heard Albert and Dorsey were just OK this year .

From what I hear from my K.C. sources, the fans opinion of Dorsey is approximately equal to our opinion of Travis Johnson after his rookie year. They're a bit more optimistic with Albert.

one year is still not enough to know for sure just how well a team drafted.

Texans- have yet to see anybody including Matt Schaub as part of the draft? yet he was aquired from Atlanta & cost the Texans another 2nd this draft (last year of compensation) & a 2nd rd. draft pick is significant. also Myers for a 6th, all he did was start all 16 games thats production. Texans aquired Steve by trading down in 1st & still got LT in Duane Brown. the only pick who really dissapointed was 3rd rd. pick Molden who wound up breaking his leg as playing time increased end of year. A-

Broncos- Best draft in years for Denver & Shanahan gets the ax. devastating inurys @ RB. Ryan Clady was my favorite OL in the draft & should have been a top 10 pick. Eddie Royal had tremendous production when Denver could still pass the ball. Lichtensteger is the type of versatile Guard/Center the Texans need to target. drafted two really promising RB's and both got hurt (wanted Texans to draft Hillis badly & they picked him up in the 7th). Larsen Spencer, LB was the player they drafted in the 6th for Chris Meyers. He was sidelined with a groin injury, looks promising going forward but nowhere near productive as Chris Meyers was. B

Cheifs- He gave A+. but forgets to mention they had to trade Jared Allen to accomplish this, you'd expect their draft to be pretty good combine this with having the 5th overall pick. Guess what I'm driving at is a difference in reference points. he is grading based strictly on picks regradless how they come or what they cost to get. I view them not just as picks but how the respective GM's worked the board, given each individual situation. that said I can make the arguement the Texans made the most of any team in last years draft given what they had to work with. a mid to late 1st, no 2nd, no 6th & middle range picks each round. still they came away with a starting QB, a starting RB, a starting LT, a starting OLB (when healthy in Adibi). depth in secondary (Molden/Barber) rotational DT in Okam & a QB to develop.

Interesting. And surprising because its well know that Dorsey was the best
DLineman and probably the best defenisve player if not the best overall player period in the best college conference in the country for his "last 2 Years". I dunno if Dorsey was injured his rookie year but I know he was plagued by knee problems at LSU. Well hopefully his second year will be
what most everyone expected for him in the NFL ?

You beat me to it on Texans. I agree 100%. It is possible that Molden could start this year. If he and Bennett have good years, Reeves gets another 4-5 INTs and Dunta is re-signed we may not need any CBs. This position could turn into a strength like LB but with more depth.

The thing about Molden is that while he didnt get alot of defensive snaps he got nearly every special teams snap and was excellent on special teams to boot. He didnt disappoint me at all. I will say it would have been pretty nice to see him in more on the D but all in all am really happy with him.

I tend to agree with this. I'm not interested in a 1st round CB this year, even though in all likelihood there will be a valuable one there @ 15. I thought Molden did a good job on special teams last year and he showed me that he can make plays, and that he has some good speed, which he will need. Robinson, Bennett, and Reeves is a good young nickel package IMO, especially when you factor in what Molden can bring to the team.

Most scouts were of the opinion that Molden would need 2 years before he was ready, and any team that was willing to wait for it would have a gem. We'll see if they were right in 2010.

I would grade the Texans draft a C+. They got a stud runner, as well as a developmental LT, and CB in the first 3 rounds. Not a great draft, but pretty solid, with good potential.

Re: Molden, Looked pretty good in camp and from what I heard was making plays and doing decent in coverage. Looked good in special teams and would've been real great to work him in for a few plays in the D. I hope we see more of him next year under Bush.

Disagree with him on Baltimore's grade. They are in the AFC championship because of Baltimore's defense AND Joe Flacco's play. He could grow into that so vaunted "franchise" type player.
