Here is a list of potential safeties I compiled by checking some of the various ranking websites. I've included whatever useful info I could get from ESPN and the like, but as for details, I'm pretty short on most. Some of these guys look like they've got real potential.
Nate Allen, USF - 6'2 206 - 136 tackles, 5 INTs, 1 FF in 3 years (really only 2) Kam Chancellor, Virginia Tech - 6'4 224 - 139 tackles, 4 INTs, 2 FF in 3 years (really only played 2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqaR7UJMo_s Barry Church, Toledo - 6'2 219 - 256 tackles, 8 INTs, 5 FF in 4 years Patrick Chung, Oregon (played LB?) - 6'0 210 - 370 tackles, 9 INTs, 3 FF in 4 years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAgUERW4VEg (watch at about 1:15 for a cool block) Emanuel Cook, South Carolina - 5'10 203 - 227 tackles, 3 INTs, 3 FF in 3 years Kevin Ellison, USC - 6'1 230 - 168 tackles, 5 INTs, 3 FF in 4 years (really only played 3) Courtney Greene, Rutgers (played CB) - 6'2 215, 386 tackles, 7 INTs, 6 FF in 4 years Michael Hamlin, Clemson - 6'3 205 - 281 tackles, 14 INTs, 2 FF in 4 years http://www.texanstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57569 Nic Harris, Oklahoma (played CB) - 6'3 230 - 224 tackles, 6 INTs, 4 FF in 4 years Rashad Johnson, Alabama (played CB) - 6'0 186 - 215 tackles, 11 INTs, 3 FF in 4 years (really only played last 2 seasons) Taylor Mays, USC - 6'3 230 - 180 tackles, 4 INTs, 1 FF in 3 years http://www.texanstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57639 http://www.texanstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57456 William Moore, Missouri - 6'1 230 - 264 tackles, 11 INTs (8 of these were in 2007), 3 FF in 4 years Derek Peques, Mississippi State (played CB) - 5'10 190 - 146 tackles, 12 INTs, 2 FF in 4 years Myron Rolle, Florida State - 6'2 218 - 207 tackles, 1 INT, 1 FF in 3 years http://www.texanstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57558 We can update these with measureables once they start coming out. Feel free to add anyone I forgot!!

Chancellor looks like a pretty good football player to me. I haven't got the chance to really study him this year (I did watch a couple of VTech games, but did not pay close attention to him.)
When I checked out Duane Brown during the off-season, I did notice that Kam was pretty good already, and he was only a soph at the time. This could be a good year to draft a safety. |

Add Sean Smith-Utah, Chip Vaughn-Wake Forest, Curtis Taylor-LSU, and Louis Delmas-Western Michigan to your list.

Okay, with Marinelli signing with the Bears... out goes my dream of him being DL coach for us and taking a DT/DE in the 1st round to build a killer DL. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think this new DC will have a lot of say in what we do with our early draft picks.
Now comes my new prediction/fantasy: (1) Sign Sean McDermott of the Eagles as our Defensive Coordinator. Specializes in the secondary (4 seasons as direct coach) and was LB coach last year. He should be able to scout some good talent for our secondary and get us playing much better defense. Young and highly though of as an up and coming coach. I have NO idea what his playcalling would be, but Philly has had a really aggressive Defense and we should see our team do a 180! (2) Kubiak and (the) Smith will listen to McDermott like they listened to Alex Gibbs last year. 1st round (sitting at 15) Rick Smith pulls off a trade down to move into the early 20's, netting us a 3rd rd pick maybe more. With that 1st round pick, McDermott wants William Moore, so we select him. (3) With our 2nd and 3rd round picks we may be able to focus on DE, OLB or DT. Maybe a pass rushing DE and an OLB that can blitz and thats good in coverage. (4) Then with that extra 3rd rd pick, we can select a RB to pair with Slaton. doubtufl Greene lasts this long, but maybe a big guy like Jennings (230lbs?). After reading/watching more on Moore, the only thing that really concernce me are his past injury issues. Ribs, ankle, shoulder... I hope this isn't a long term issue, because if there's any doubt, we should run. With that said, I'm not too worried other than that. This season he really played up on the LOS more as a CB (see deflation in INTs). I think he could lose some of the weight he's added this year but still bulk up in the weight room. Having him at safety with the ability to come up at CB, or blitz will be great. I like him if we can trade down some. With Dunta (hopefully), Reeves, Bennett, Molden, 1st rd pick Moore, Eugene Wilson, Harrison, Barber, CC Brown... McDermott should have a lot of talent to work with and build an aggressive secondary.

I wanted Mays. None of the other safeties get me excited enough to use a first-rounder on them - unless we trade down.
William Moore doesn't really get me going. |

He can play the hell out of the ball though. So he has that going for him. I just don't like using a first on a safety that isn't the complete package. |

Courtney Greene is my sleeper and favorite out of the group. He's got the size and speed everyone wants, and is also a balanced safety. He's experienced in pass coverage and loves coming up in run support. Never hurts he's confident as well. Some others to look at that are worth mentioning:
Louis Delmas, Western Michigan Otis Wiley, Michigan State David Bruton, Notre Dame

Wiley doesn't have all the measurables but he always found a way to get the job done. Bruton carried Notre Dame's defense for the past two years. Some other guys to keep an eye on: Derek Pegues - FS Sherrod Martin - FS Patrick Chung - SS |

I couldn't find info for all the guys on the list but the one that sticks out in my mind is Patrick Chung. A little small but I like what I read, for 2nd round I would consider it.

Pete Carroll is saying that Taylor Mays is coming back to school next year. Saw it on the bottom line this morning during Mike & Mike.
