Default Question about Slaton

Why isn't he receiving 3 - 5 screen/swing/short passes a game? I thought the one screen they attempted vs Baltimore (phantom holding call ahoy) was a great precursor to what this guy can do with the ball in space.

It seems lately that any screen pass or play similar to that is going to Ahman Green. Now I can see keeping Green in a passing formation if you're going to use him to block, but really, and kind of designed pass play to the RB should go to Slaton because of his speed and burst.

Somebody tell me I'm wrong and then explain why.

Drop dead legs would be Van Kubiak's response. Personally, I think we get a little more of the playbook every week, when players and the unit show they have competence to take the next step. I can not imagine any other reasons why we do not get the ball in the hands of the most explosive player in Texans' history the ball more often.

You're not wrong. I was actually thinking the same thing. If you get this guy some touches out in space, we're probably looking at big time gains. To me it is just another way to get the doubles off Andre but what do I know.

I guess they have to play it safe with him because after him you only got Ahman and Ryan Moats. Just trying not to hurt him or something.

I think part of the problem was highlighted in the tv coverage yesterday---namely, Sage is very poor/slow at getting balls to check down receivers.

This doesn't speak to draws/screens, per say, but it speaks to why Slaton isn't being used in the pass game as a check down

Good point.. Whenever they did that little break down on him (Sage and his slow progressions) yesterday, a couple of things started to make sense. This being one of them.

It's a mystery to me. I was always a huge critic of how Domanick Davis got so many screen/swing/short passes a game but that was because Carr used the safety valve so often it became predictable and easy to stop. Plus Davis could make something out of it but he wasn't going to beat anyone with it. Slaton is whole different story and I'd love to see him get those touches. He'd be tearing up defenses and freeing up AJ all the time. After a while the defenses would have to contend with the possibility of this just about every down.

They were getting deeper passes all day long so that doesn't bug me too much. KW or AJ ducking behind the zone was easy money.

However, it seems this team has never used screens that well. Running screens effectively would slow the pass rush but the Texans never seem to run it that well.

I also don't think the Denver system utilizes the screen that much.

Herveyol,

At one point in time, I wondered the same thing. But with the ZBS, in passing situations, it turns into the Zone Locking System. If the line especially the tackles cannot independently take care of the rush on the QB, the RB is usually called upon to maintain a vigil back with the QB. Certainly no-one would argue that as well as Brown is doing as a rookie, he gets taken to task commonly when placed one-on-one with descent pass rushers. Our TEs have not taken the pass blocking roll very often for whatever reason. If the the RB is missing in the back field, then our QB may be the next player to be missing. Just my observation.

Why?

Because they didn't do that in Denver 1998.

This 21 Century thinking is a dangerous thing
