Default If Kubiak stays......

It's time that McNair brings in one of these "football guys" (like Polian or Parcells) that we hear about to take over personnel duties. If it means that Rick Smith has to go, so be it.

McNair needs to put a system in place where the head coach works under the GM. From what I've gathered, we don't have that here.

There are very few head coaches that can "get their own groceries" and still be effective at gametime. In hindsight, it wasn't a good idea to give a rookie head coach the kind of control that Kubes has here. The only guys that deserve that kind of responsibility are guys that have Super Bowl rings as head coaches.

This has been talked about by a number or people. Mike Lombardi had a piece on it.

A pregame show, CBS IIRC, was talking about how the Texans needed to add a "football CEO."

Keith at In the Bullseye also has a nice piece on the Texans' hierarchy.

Richard Smith, and probably all of his assistants, has to be replaced. But, I think a good talent evaluator would be equally as important, especially given our FA track record.

The last time we brought in a special football consultant we rewarded David Carr with an 8 million dollar extension, gave him the reigns for another year, and brought in the QB guru Gary Kubiak.

I'm not talking about a consultant.

I'm talking about a real life GM that acts in a GM's capacity....hires coaches and scouts, runs the draft and brings in free agents.

The problem with this approach is that if it is to happen, it needs to be done soon. If all this happens after the season is over, there will likely not be enough time to create "a new solid direction," and get all the coaches and scouts together and on the same page and organized well enough to be ready for a well thought out draft.

Thats last one we had like that his tenure ended with a 2-14 season. Are we sure we want another one of those?

Didn't Mcnair do this with Casserly as the GM. Better yet, didn't a former head coach with a Super Bowl ring named Dan Reeves make a personnel decision in hiring Kubiak.

I don't think Mr. McNair has "bold move" anywhere in his DNA.

We will get another year (or two) of Kubiak and Smith and lil' Shanny. They will re-arrange the decks of the Titanic by firing Richard Smith (hopefully). The marketing department will kick into high gear in the off-season to convince us all that 2009 is The Year and we need to be shiny, happy fans. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Default Re: If Kubiak stays......

I don't think you can get an established GM with a track record of success who will do what the OP hopes if (as the title of the thread indicates), Kubiak stays.

When they brough Parcells in at Miami, they didn't tell him he had to keep Cam Cameron - even though he'd only been there a year. They asked him if he wanted to, he said no, and as a result, the entire FO and coaching staff got blown up. Parcells then put it together the way he wanted to.

The first year Polian was in Indy, he hired Mora. Obviously, since Carolina was an expansion team when he took over, he hired the coach there. He was promoted from within for the Buffalo GM job, and even then replaced the HC midway thru this first season.

If Kubiak's part of the package, the guys you're looking for are not going to come here. It's not going to be like Kubes and Carr where the unproven candidate tells the owner what they want to hear about the current situation, then changes it after a year. If they can't hire who they want day one, they're not coming here - and they shouldn't.

I've developed a pretty good amount of ambivalence about Kubiak. It wouldn't bother me to see him given another year to succeed. Even at 3-7, this season doesn't seem like the Bataan Death March that the 2005 season was, and a big part of me believes that if Kubes can hire the right DC for '09, and leave things on that side of the ball to him, we'll be fine. Still, that's obviously far from a given, and if it doesn't happen, it's another year of frustration. But I think we either need to keep Kubes another year, or blow up the coaching staff (including HC) and the FO.

I just know that if somebody who's a proven commodity steps in to be the guy turn us from mediocre (at best) into a winning franchise, and the first thing he did was keep the coach of 3 years (no matter who that coach was), I would immediately start wondering about the new guy we just brought in.

Ive never been a huge fan of coaches having all the say. They never tend to work out. Coaches are too afraid to admit they signed the wrong guy, so they keep playing people who arent living up to draft/FA expectations. See also Okoye, Reeves, ect...

Pretty much. McNair isn't the type to make rash changes or really come down hard on his coaches. He is going to give Gary another year, then when the stadium is half full next season he will make a change, just like last time.

Who so far has missed on three QBs ? Either you Keep Kubes and Smith giving them a fourth season or you don't. The guy is an offense guru, who can't pick Qbs or manage a game for squat.

as far as Lombadri goes....

What the heck is a GM guru going to tell Mr. McNair what he doesn't already know....they missed on just about every personel move they made last off season. The gamble wth Meyres and Mr. B is killing them. I can only assume this from the last game because they are scared to death to run the ball staight at the lightess d-line in the league. Their back up QB, the one that on one wanted to trade last off season is have mechanics issues. And now they are scared to throw the ball down the feild for the fact that they don't know if they are going to get Good Sage or Bad Sage. and since they have to set up the run using the pass... that presents a problem. Their LBs suck at getting pressure. Their Rb free agent can't stay on the feild. Their Dbs seem lost most of the time when they cut trails with experenced veteran Wrs. Their DTs can't stop the rush. On and on and on....

What the heck is the guy going to tell Bob McNair that he hasn't seen with his own eyes ? McNair's only two choices with this crew is fire them and start over. Or keep them and build. Not my 750 million dollar property. Up to him. I'd dig in myself.

Kubiak and Smith come from the Shanahan school where the GM works for the head coach. Maybe that's not the case here, but I doubt it.

no, reeves did not. in fact, reeves said that Young could play in the NFL. kubiak was chosen because of his local ties, cheap pricetag, and willingness to try and work with the garbage that is/was David Carr.

Reeves was basically brought in to give the visage that McNair was looking over every option and getting a 2nd opinion, when in fact all he was doing was just a dog and pony show. He knew he was bringing back Carr for the maximum team option and that he had no interest in admitting mistake and kicking Carr's candy ass to the curb.

Face it fans. Kubiak is coming back in 2009. After all, he created the only 3 game winning streak going through the deadly gauntlet of Detroit, Miami, and the Bengals. That alone is worthy of a statue being built in his honor right in front of Reliant. Kubiak will be back, we will suck once again, and then and only then will Bob entertain a change from Kubiak. McNair is as stubborn and dumb as it gets for NFL owners, so dont expect a great replacement either. I am pretty much resigned to this team sucking as long as Uncle Bob owns the team. Bob just doesn't get it and I don't know if he ever will. Freaking pathetic.

But Bob needs some sympathy. The market has been tough on him and he is saying we need to cut expenses. Now he only has like 1 billion dollars in the bank and not 1.1 billion anymore. Wahhh wahhh wahh. Go cry to your mama, Bob. I don't want to hear it.

I've been thinking about this. I would like to bring in a football operations president like Miami did with Parcells. With Rick Smith it is looking more like the chicken or egg conundrum. Did the staff scout these guys out , ask for them and Rick was like ok i'll get them? If so the scouting department needs to be blown up too.

Question is who do we go after. It might seem weird but I've thought about it( i might go down in flames for this too) and the guy I think who would be pretty successful in that position is : Dick Vermeil.

Ok hear me out. He's been around the league for years. He took a miserable St. Louis team and turned them into a super bowl winner. He then inherited a KC team and took them to the playoffs. He's got an eye for talent and a knack for turning teams around as a coach. How about a guy that over decades has shown the NFL hasn't passed him by?

True.

Sad, and somewhat harshly-worded, but true.

Our only hope is that Bob throws his hands up in the air, resolves to let the pros do their jobs, and shovels the money to quality coaches/personnel. Hey, if Obama is serious about raising taxes on team owners (and players) then McNair might as well find a way to spend all the money and basically operate like a non-profit organization whereby he zeroes out at the end of the year, meaning that he pays out profits and let's those he pays out DEAL WITH THE TAXES. An Obama presidency and eventual tax hike on billionaires like Bob "might" force him to stop trying to be soooo profitable every season. DISCLAIMER: I did NOT vote for Obama, and do not think anybody needs a tax hike.

(And here's the part where people come in and blast you for being mean-spirited, Second Honeymoon)

True or not, there is nothing that Rick Smith has done that I really find fault with. Sure the Reeves signing might not have been great, but, it's not like we gave him Nate Clements money, as well as the need was so pressing we needed SOMEBODY.

Ahman Green was a "meh" signing, but Rick Smith got the contract practically voided and is now going on a game-by-game basis.

In short, no, the GM is not the problem, it's the goddamned defense. I agree with Vinny on one point, screw Bobby Grier.

Personally after the last few games and seeing Kubiak's lack of decision making etc i would welcome a new GM. Like people have mentioned our gameplan doesnt change period, our secondary doesnt exist and our QB situation at the moment is terrible. Would welcome a fresh face in to shake things up and get everyone on their toes abit.
