Ok, here it goes. Please critique
2009 Texans Mock Draft 1) Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama I know, another D Lineman? However, Cody is the run-stuffer the Texans need, and will occupy at least 2 blockers. Stamina is a concern (at 365, of course) but he has the makings of an anchor for the line. Will help Okoye rush the passer. 2) Auston English, DE, Oklahoma Yet another DL? Yes, English will be the pass rusher this team needs, and is none to shabby against the run. Imagine a DL of: Mario-Okoye-Cody-English 3) Brandon Carter, G, Texas Tech Not ideal for the zone scheme, but it does not really look like the Texans run that anyway. Carter will bring an attitude to the line. 4) Bruce Johnson, CB, Miami Too long to wait for a corner, but Johnson has good athleticism. The improved pass rush hopefully justifies waiting until the 4th round for secondary help. 5) A.Q. Shipley, C, Penn State Hopefully a diamond in the rough. Very solid player 6) Lee Robinson, OLB, Alcorn State Too long to wait for OLB help, but again I am banking on the improved DL. Robinson is a minor project, but athleticism and production cannot be denied. 7) Tyler Roehl, HB, North Dakota State Hear me out, Roehl can play on special teams, and backup the FB spot and RB spot. He is a multi-purpose guy that can benefit the team. And what the heck, top 5 free agents: 1) Brian Toal, OLB, Boston College Talented player, just always seems to be injured. 2) Jason Boltus, QB, Hartwick Project QB puts up insane stats 3) Javorris Jackson, FS, Savannah State Big FS with range and playmaking ability 4) Tony Dixon, RB, Kentucky Can never have to many runningbacks 5) Julius Pruitt, WR, Ouachita Baptist Extremely talented, raw receiver. |

Would love to pick up Toal after the draft and see what he can do.

Selvie and Cushing I think will be gone before the Texans make a second selection. Probably both gone in the latter thrid of the first round.

English looks like a natural 3-4 OLB. Carter does not fit a ZBS. I don't know? some interesting ideas but are they coming out? do they fit?

I know Carter does not fit the ZBS but I still feel that the line needs an attitude, and he is a beast. Tech's line is outstanding, and I really dont see alot of the ZBS here in Houston. |

the ZBS is here to stay & I think Gibbs is here for the duration until he can fix or make the nessecary adjustments. so far he's had one draft & free agent period to work with, I'm sure he'll get some new material to work with I just don't expect they will be anything but athletic & smallish in size. |

Would have to draft at least one OLB who fits the system. Weaver would probably be the other DE (Bulman maybe).

I'm not really hip on moving to a 3-4.
We don't have the LBs and I think making Mario a 3-4 DE would be a big waste. What we really need is a competent Defensive coordinator. What we do first round will depend on what we do in the off-season obviously and I think we can fill more on the defensive side via FA and cutting the last bit of fat off the defense(Weaver and Greenwood).I'd like to see us do a better job of developing players. We went heavy on defense in later part of the draft especially guys who seemed to have good potential. Molden, Okam and Adibi should start to get some serious reps if this season looks like it is going sour AGAIN. I think one of the first two picks needs to address the interior of the offensive line.I want someone on this line to really enjoy dominating the guy opposite of him and be an enforcer that this line desperately needs. |

Just last year they were experimenting with Mario standing up and he had good success. The only good 3-4 OLB that isn't a converted DE is Merriman
DeMeco would suffer the most since he is already getting beaten up this year in the 4-3. It would be the Jon Vilma effect all over again |

seriously does it really matter? we're somewhere between both worlds, sort of a Pans Labyrinth of NFL football. Mario is still a foundation piece RDE/RDT, Amobi LDE/LDT (Okoye could be a really outstanding left end against the run with speed to pressure/sack the QB his size inside is being neutralized) & yes Terrence "MOUNT" Cody in the middle. the biggest mistake the Texans made in 04 (no disrespect to Dunta) was not taking Vince Wilfork, with Payne always hurt they had to upgrade & they didn't. you can't run a dominating 3-4 without a 2 gap nose. in regards to DeMeco he could easily be either a hybrid ROLB over Mario. in short we have just as many parts to a whole in either scheme just not enough to play either effective so what difference does it really make? other than to fire the DC & draft accordingly

....they can't wait on the LB. Demeeco's playing Hurt....and has been for two seasons....the presumption that Dilles is locked and loaded by September is the same kind of assumption they made Last off season with Okoye's improvement this season. They absolutely can't wait on Greenwood and backing up the linebacker slots untill the fifth round. Let me speak plain...Greenwood is done. And assuming here....Adibi, whether it was injuries or incompetences....couldn't get himself onto the field. You can't gamble the '09 sesaon on that. NFW. Overall nice mock. You put some real thought into it.
