Default The Mike Leach Appreciation Thread

Like all Red Raiders I have an unhealthy love of Mike Leach, and not only because of the job he does coaching my beloved Red Raiders.

Why you may ask. Just watch the clips (and join me in praying that Leach stays in Lubbock...please?)

Better love him now - 'cuz you're gonna hate him next year wherever he ends up.

The guy is weird and different. Just for that - I do love him, even as a Longhorn fan.

I have that very same thought. The amount of money that either Tennesse or Clemson could throw at him is daunting.

Tech should give him a raise NOW.

Will you be mad at him if he leaves? Say Tech offers him a big raise, but he turns it down. How will you feel about that?

I won't be mad if he leaves, as long as he doesn't act like Saban or Coach Fran of Rodriquiz (WVU). I know that Tech is not on the same level as a Clemson or Tennesse, although I don't think of either of those as top-flight coaching gigs. Rumor has it that Butch Davis is being considered for the Vols job. My silver lining is that I don't think alot of programs in the SEC think that highly of Leach or his offense.

I hope that Tech is already trying to negoiate a contract extension with Leach, as well as trying to secure more financing for the football program.

My heart hopes he stays, my brain says he's gone. (although I felt exactly this way last year)

Here's the thing Tech has going for them as far as keeping Leach:

1 - Again, he's a strange guy. I could definitely see him being the type that would rather be the big fish in a small dust bowl - assuming the money is at least close.

2 - If Tech goes on to win the title, or even lose in the title game - I think they have a LEGIT shot at replacing Texas A&M as the #2 most-favored school in Texas for the homegrown Texas high school talent.

I'm not as up on the college game as I am the pro game - so maybe one of the more knowledgable guys could enlighten me... how close is it as far as recruiting for the Texas schools once you get past UT? Is the #2 spot even remotely contested at this point?

I'm not up on recruiting that much, but one owuld think that QBs and WRs would be tripping over themselves to get to Lubbock. Tech does decently in getting talent out of Oklahoma as well.

Carbtree is a good example, UT wanted him to play DB; Tech and Leach saw him as a WR...and the rest as they say.

Other things I think help Tech in keeping Leach. He's from Cody, Wy; so I think he relates to Lubbock and west Texas fairly well. Also he and the school fit so well in terms of personality, and there have been and hopefully will continue to be improvements made to the facilities on campus. Jones looks a thousand times better then it did when I was there.

Yeah, the 'horns blew it with Crabtree, no doubt.

I really do like Mike Leach. Did you hear his interview on Jim Rome's show a few weeks ago? Classic.

Another factor in the Leach at a bigtime program discussion.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200....ap/index.html

Quote:
His quirky ways -- and now his unbeaten season -- have endeared him and his team to a loyal following in West Texas.

But Leach's wall-in approach to player availability to media is about as restrictive as any in the country and might not fly at bigger programs. Even standout players can be insulated from reporters for weeks at a time.

Leach claims the policy minimizes distractions and players stay better focused. He picks players he thinks can handle the media exposure.

"We're tighter than some places and we're more generous than some places," Leach said last week. "Then we have to make decisions and so that's what we do. We're diligent about calling media back the best we can and other places don't do that."

How, though, would his media policy play in, say, Knoxville, a bigtime Southeastern Conference program where Tennessee fans are accustomed to hearing from players regularly?

"That'd be very interesting," said quarterback Graham Harrell, a contender for the Heisman Trophy along with favorite receiver Michael Crabtree. "He'd keep his players limited in their availability. I think he feels that winning football games is going to make you a lot more popular than having his players" available for interviews. "I feel that's his philosophy ... and that's what he's going to stick with."
From the same:
Quote:
Leach has two years remaining on a five-year contract and is making $1.75 million this season.

His boss, athletic director Gerald Myers, declined to comment Monday about Leach's contract other than to say discussions about an extension will wait until after the season.

If Texas Tech plays its way into the national championship game those discussions would be in January

Most coaches don't go below four or five years remaining on their contracts before they get an extension.

Next season Leach will receive $1.85 million with a $800,000 bonus if he finishes the 2009 season; the contract's final year ups his pay to $2.15 million with a $200,000 bonus if he completes the 2010 season.

If he stays at Texas Tech, that is.

Leach's name has surfaced for openings in recent years at places like Arkansas and UCLA but he stayed put. Now, officials at Tennessee and Washington could come calling Leach's name.

No Rome here in DFW. A friend of mine managed to record Rome talking about Leach giving out the dating advice, which is classic.

From the Rome website (maybe it's outdated?)

DALLAS KHFX-AM 1460

The dating advice thing was hilarious... it really endeared me to him, even though I already knew he was kind of weird.

It would be interesting to see how Leach would operate in a different place like Knoxville. My god, they are INSANE about the Vols in Tennessee. Next to the amount of Longhorn stickers I see in Austin and Texas - I've never seen more stickers and automobile garb for a football team than I see when I drive through Tennessee. I drive the length of Tennessee at least once a year, and from start to finish - it's like every third car has a Vols sticker or flag. Leach would certainly have to adjust a bit if he went there since they have kind of a different deal with the media there.

1460? That's a no one for me. I'll have to try that, thanks.

At this point (with is career and his "value"), I don't think Leach is looking at having to adjust at all. No mater where he goes.

I hope Leach stays in Lubbock .... its good for the Big 12 that TT has a healthy program .... I fear that if he leaves TT will end up like A&M the past couple seasons.

I've been following recruiting heavily for at least the past five years so I'll take a shot at it.

I use a scale up to 6 stars.
6 star - Perennial top 10 in recruiting
5 star - Solid top 25
4 star - Between 26-50
3 star - Between 50-75
2 star - Between 76-100
1 star - constantly in the cellar

Texas - 6 (they are usually between 5-10)
Texas A&M - 5 (usually 20-25)
Texas Tech - 4 (usually 30-40)
Baylor - 3
TCU - 3
Houston - 2
SMU - 2
UTEP - 2
Rice - 2
North Texas - 1

Tech is recruiting well this season but they are typically behind both UT & A&M.

Lucky for everyone else, A&M can't seem to do anything with the talent they bring in.

Tech is also sort of like Kansas in that instead of going after top players they go after lesser known recruits who fit their system the best.

Leach meet with Washington yesterday, about the soon to be vacant HC spot for the Huskies.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3741224

I had hoped that with the Tennesse and Clemson gigs being filled Leach would not be tempted by any other of the available jobs. We shall see.

Shame if Leach leaves TT, but if that is the case, as long as Art Briles' secret plan to upgrade to TT coach fails horribly, I'm ok with that.

Not necessarily.

He might be doing interviews just so he can get Tech to offer him more money.

That's my hope, as I don't think Washington is an upgrade over Tech (facilites, availabilty of recruits, fan base, etc)
