Default Owen Daniels: 133 yards on 11 receptions

Wow. Did any Texans fan, three or for years ago, think he'd see the day when our TE could blow up the way OD has this season?

Guys, we HAVE the offense clicking...at least everywhere but the QB. Slaton is making crazzzy moves, getting positive yards when previous Texans RBs would have crumpled for a 3-yard loss. Our TE is clutch. Our star WR is unstoppable. We have role players in Walter and Anderson who make the tough catches when thrown their way. Kris Brown is automatic.

And this is year 1 of Alex Gibbs run blocking scheme.

If we had a clutch QB, we'd be right there in 2nd place in our division AND would probably be in great contention for a wildcard right now.

For all the grief I give over Gary Kubiak and how I have been saying that I don't think he's getting it done, today's game (although ugly in SOME ways) was still a reminder that we can put points on the board. That's not something Dom Capers' Texans squad was able to do a good job of. The offense looked like Keystone Cops out there under Capers.

I hope Kubiak pulls a Chicago Bears and just loads up on defense in the 2009 draft. If we had better DBs, and another solid DL or LB, or both, we'd just need a QB and a new D-coordinator to round it out.

OD's a threat when defenses blitz because he gets off the snap and into his pattern so quickly and precisely.

His 133 yards did the same thing that blocking would accomplish, but the 133 yards pushed the ball down the field.

This week, I suggested that our gameplan should be to use three-step drops, screens to RBs and to WRs, quick outs, quick slants, short curls, and just anything to get the ball out of the QBs hand so that the Vikes' defense could not harass the QB. When you do that, you gas the dlinemen and it also deflates them a little, too.

We could have dinked and dunked them all day long. I am liking the overall playcalling thus far in this season, but I don't see us adjusting to what a defense is over-using. In this case, the defense was blasting around the edges a lot...and we were still using deep drops from under center. That's a time for us to go Texas Tech on their arse...BAM! get the ball in Anderson's hands, Slaton's hands, or AJ's hands etc. We seem to never adjust to the defense's tendencies.

The Vikes got pressure on almost every play, but they got most of it right up the middle. Too bad their DTs weren't suspended for this game, because they gave Myers and co. fits.

Daniels was outstanding yesterday. That part of the offense was well conceived and executed.

Porter is on everybody like gangbusters. We aren't getting murdered every week there. We're unable to stop teams that rush the passer well. It's not a disaster, it's just not a strength. We need to get better up there.

Until our offense can consistently run the ball against damn near everybody this is going to be a problem. On a fairly consistent basis I see posts where people insist that we're a "pass first" team and that we should "pass first to setup the run" and that's some intensely retarded thinking right there. Our line is not huge. They are not "road graders" or 330lb monsters. They don't take 4-6 seconds just to run around and they never will. They're smallish, quick, and very much susceptible to being overwhelmed by teams that can rush the passer well IF they spend all afternoon dropping back to pass. This isn't Munchak, Matthews, Dino Steinkuhler and the boys. These guys couldn't hold those players jocks. Warren Moon dropping back to pass as much as he did would be a dead man by now trying to do it behind this group and that's not because our offensive line is bad and these players are crap. That's because they aren't setup to do that stuff. They're supposed to be able to run the ball....a lot. We aren't and that's a problem. We're also passing far too much when we get behind on the road and it becomes a matter of these teams pinning their ears back and overwhelming our line while their fans scream so loud that our QB has to put tape over his ear holes.

Until we can run the ball and keep our opponents from running up 28-31 points a week consistently we'll be no better than a .500 team and lucky to be that (meaning we'll have to be near perfect at home).

Schaub is the perfect QB for what Kubiak wants to do. Thinking that we aren't set at QB is a mistake. The real problem here (on offense) is that we're not doing what Kubiak wants to do yet. We're having some success with this but it's not the kind of offensive production we're looking for. We need to be able to run the ball. We need to be consistently cracking 150 yards on the ground and controlling clock.

Yes, yes, yes and yes. EXACTLY. This post was so good, it is worth quoting it again.

And it is the reason why the Texans play better at home than on the road. Because on the road, it is harder to execute your offense and the Texans don't have a defense that can hold points down.

Said very similar things at the Chron blog.

I would have liked them to attempt more runs. Especially when Schaub was getting killed. If you pass as much as the Texans do, you will get your quarterback killed if a good pass rushing team doesn't think you are going to run at all.

This is the one thing I will give credit to the coaching staff for. I said at half time to GET DANIELS THE BALL! They were doubling up on AJ that whole first half, and I kept wondering why we weren't going to Daniels more. They did in the 2nd half though, and it worked great. Daniels is the real deal. We have to continue feeding this guy the ball relentlessly. It will open up many other weapons especially AJ.

Schaub can't always expect to go to work under ideal conditions...

Sometimes the opposing D-line is going to have a better day than our O-line...No reason to fall apart...

The turnovers in the redzone were ridiculous...

OD leads the AFC in yardage. I can honeslty say I was not a big fan of his coming out of Sconsin, but he has played his tail off since he got hear. I just wish he hadn't had fumbled against the Browns last year. I would like to see a little bit more running in the offense but we are on the right track. Defensively...

This is not be meant as a knock on Owen Daniels, but the reason why he caught 11 passes on Sunday, was because they didn't want AJ catching 11 of them.

You take what the defense gives you.

Less see now, ODs basically a Texan because of Casserlys recommendation
to draft him ? Right ?
But OD could definitely be a serious Pro Bowl possibility if Houston were to challenge for a playoff berth IMO.

You're right. Kubiak said he hadn't heard of Owen Daniels until Casserly told him about him.

As far going to the Pro Bowl, fat chance.

I still remember the reaction on Message Boards when we drafted Daniels with the QB by his name. Everyone was freaking out that we took a quarterback, even once Kubiak laid out his plans to switch him to TE people complained we shoudl have just taken an experienced TE.

Damn I love it when a plan comes together!
