Default Texans and playing on the road.

From Texans Chick post
Quote:
The reason why it is difficult for the Texans to win on the road is the following:

1. It is difficult for any offense to perform on the road. Communication on the line is particularly difficult, made worse facing good defenses.

2. Good road teams have great defenses. The defense keeps the game close and gives the offense time to get their stuff together. It also keeps the offense from having to play from behind.

3. The Texans have a feast and famine defense.

4. (It would have been nice for the Texans to run the ball more. If you get into a throw first game against a team that is a good pass rushing team, you will get your starting quarterback hit sideways in the knee because the other team pins their ears back and stops respecting the run at all).

sigh

and her post got me thinking a bit so I googled

from Len pastabelly in 2006
Winning on the road still a mystery to many
Quote:
"When you walk into a [road] environment, you want as many character guys walking in there with you as you can get," Reagor said. "Because at some point on the road, something negative is going to happen, and it's how you respond to that incident that determines the outcome. And leaders always respond better to those kinds of things. You've got to have a focus, a single-mindedness, and tough people have that."
Esp on the defense.. we just haven't got that mindset yet and a few upgrades here and there

Quote:
But it isn't only intangibles that make for successful road teams. And it isn't merely lack of character that accounts for the abysmal road performances of many franchises. There is a football element involved, too, and that should not be overlooked.

Good road franchises tend to be teams that run the ball well. Why so? Because even in an era of highly sophisticated passing games, running the ball is the surest recipe for victory. On the road, it often takes the home crowd out of the game because, for fans, there is nothing more energy-sapping than watching the opposition's offense monopolize the ball. Teams that win on the road tend not to panic and abandon their game plan if they fall behind early, and they find a way to hang in against adversity. And they don't turn the ball over -- a transgression in any contest, but particularly in road games.

Generally, teams that succeed on the road are simply, as Farrior noted, good teams. But they are also teams with collective will, resilience and staying power, and those are traits only the best teams possess.

"They talk about road warriors, but good teams are warriors no matter where they play," Farrior said.
And running the ball is better but still a work in progress

Default Travel-weary Texans aim to stop road skid against Browns

http://www.portclintonnewsherald.com...09/1002/NEWS01

Quote:
CLEVELAND — Not to be rude, but Browns coach Romeo Crennel wouldn’t mind seeing Cleveland in all its winter splendor by the time the Houston Texans get to town.
Those knock-you-off-your-feet wind gusts off Lake Erie, the sideways sleet, the bone-chilling Arctic temperatures, and of course, the lake effect snow — inches upon glorious inches of it.

Bring it on, Crennel said.

“I don’t know that they’ve seen much snow from where they’re coming from,” Crennel said.

There’s something else these Texans haven’t seen in a while — a road victory.

Winless in five games outside the Lone Star State this season, Houston hasn’t won away from home in its last eight road games since beating the Oakland Raiders on Nov. 2, 2007.

Inside, outside, night, day, it doesn’t seem to matter. The Texans (3-7) don’t travel well.

“It’s been over a year,” tight end Owen Daniel said. “So, I think we’re due. We’re due for one.”

The Texans have never lost a game when the temperature is below 40 degrees.

So yeah, bring it on!

When you can't create turnovers on defense and your Rosencopter is a turnover machine....you can't win on the road.

Wait a second......when did we get one of those, that would actually be a improvement over what we have right now. Right now all we have is the homeless man's defense......we're starving in the street. There is no "feasting".

I think NcNair needs to crank up that Reliant A/C and get some icicles hanging from the rafters.

Although it wasn't just done by running, I think this was a big key to the victory over the Browns. That first drive took up a huge chunk of the first quarter, so by the time the Browns got the ball, not only were they behind by 7, a lot of that "start of the game enthusiasm" had worn down. Although it's somewhat counterintuitive, I think had we scored a touchdown very quickly, it would have been less demoralizing for the fans, and their energy could have given the Browns a bigger boost.
