Default Patrick Edwards update

Those of you that saw the game already know about the injury. Looks like he's going to make a full recovery and will be back next year.

Edwards, Houston's leading receiver with 634 yards on 46 catches, suffered a compound fracture and had a rod inserted in his lower right leg during surgery, said Houston associate athletic director Chris Burkhalter.

"The doctor said I will be good, ready for next season," Edwards said.

I had a similar injury when I played in high school (of course mine was just a freak injury on the field, it didn't happen because of gross negligence on the part of anyone else).

I made a full recovery within 8 months & was able to play the next season.

I'm happy for Edwards. You hate to see a kid get hurt.

These kinds of injuries are common in soccer. He may be back next year, but he'll be full speed his Junior year. As far as being able to play, I'm not sure how it would translate to football, but in soccer, players that suffer this kind of injury are often 100% healthy, but the fear of aggravating the injury affects their playing for a while.

I agree.

I think he will be physically ready for next year, but he is going to have to take a few hits to that leg before he will feel comfortable mentally.

Good to hear that. That injury was just gruesome. I hate watching someone sprain their ankle. Seeing something like that gives me the heebie jeebies.

Houston WR Patrick Edwards returns to hospital
By MICHAEL MURPHY Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle

Patrick Edwards, a redshirt freshman wide receiver at the University of Houston who suffered a compound fracture of his right leg Oct. 28, was admitted into a Houston-area hospital Tuesday “as a precautionary measure, to be more proactive and safe rather than sorry,” according to Cougars’ coach Kevin Sumlin.

“He wasn’t feeling well,” Sumlin said. “I think that everything that happened has was just a little bit much for him. He’s trying to get back to normal. I talked to Dr. (Jim) Muntz today and he said that everything was good.

“We’re just being cautious more than anything else, just to make sure that there’s no infection or anything else.”

Edwards broke his leg when he ran into a cart loaded with band equipment that was parked just off the playing field at Marshall. He had surgery later that night in Huntington, W.Va., to place a rod into his fibula, and had returned to campus last Friday to resume classes.

After being taken off blood thinners, Edwards developed a fever, so he skipped Sumlin’s weekly luncheon, where he was scheduled to talk to the media. It was later decided to check Edwards into the hospital for observation. He is expected to be released Thursday afternoon.

“Being taken off the blood thinners, the reduction of pain medication, the flight back and him going to classes has been a bit much for him,” Sumlin said. “It’s all been a little overwhelming for him. I knew something was up Tuesday when he said, ‘Hey, I don’t feel good so I’m not coming to the press (luncheon).’

“He didn’t show up for dinner (Tuesday night), so we decided to admit him, just to be on the safe side. The biggest worry is infection, which could create some real issues.”
This still chaps me. I know it was a boneheaded thing and nobody wanted it to happen, but how stupid was that? I know if you look around any college or NFL endzone you will see trouble waiting to happen and often it does to a lesser extent, but it still makes me a little pissed.

Maybe hearing on the video at the very end someone in the stands yelling, "Walk it off!" doesn't help my thoughts on the matter.

The school paper said he was under heavy watch for infection because he had a gash over the break.
