First of all watch this collage video of AP in college (his style is unchanged in the NFL)........He basically runs totally upright virtually all the time. Tacklers go for his feet, many times missing, other times just slipping off.

RB's in general are encouraged to keep shoulder and head low, and eyes up so that when you're about to get tackled you can "explode" upward into the defender......that way knocking them off balance instead of you.

The way to counter an upright runner is bury the helmet into his chest. No, Smith, I didn't say bury your head up his ass. I wouldn't want to deprive you of the pleasure of maintaining yours in the usual position.......not even for a short while. Going on, I hope that someone will be focussing in on techniques to bring down this less common style of runner.

I would package against the vikings. If I see a fullback , I bring in another lb or dl and takeout a a safety. That would make it a 4-4 or 5-2. If I see 2 te's, I go more he extra lb cuz they don't have a vertical te. I'm reading the block and run blitzing. Get them to 3rd and 7. Another option is jump out 2 tds and make them pass.

Childress couched his concerns by saying the fumbles, two of which occurred in the red zone, haven't all been caused by Peterson's carelessness. Some balls, the coach said, have been knocked from the running back's
grip because of a jarring hit. Peterson didn't give himself the same leeway.
"It's really just being careless with the ball," he said, "especially through traffic."

In truth, the fumbles likely have been caused by strong hits from opponents and from some negligence. Peterson admitted that because fumbling never has been an issue for him, he perhaps wasn't thinking enough about protecting the ball.

During those fumbled rushes, Peterson said his shoulders were not low enough and the ball was not high or tight enough. Instead, he said, he's swinging the ball and sometimes opening up his stride too soon.

"There are guys out there reaching from different directions," he said. "There might be a crease where there's a guy getting held up by an offensive lineman who can just stick his hand out and knock the ball out when you think you feel comfortable enough to open up your stride. That's how fumbles like that occur."

Having watched a few of the Vikings' games, our D might consider stacking the box specifically against AP and resign ourselves to one-on-one wideout coverage.

The QB first has to be able to get it to the WR. Frerotte in 180 passing attempts has only 14 passes over 20 yds and 3 passes over 40. And remember that this yardage includes after the catch yds. AP is a much more real threat. If threat reality changes in the course of the game, then that's when our D should adjust to it. Meanwhile, I would not think that treating the passing and running threats on equal planes would be prudent.
