Texas Tech's kicker was initially a contest winner

This kid won a contest to come out of the stands to kick a 30 yard field goal for a month's free rent. He nailed it and the coach noticed.

I'm pretty sure most able-bodied people with coordination could kick a 30-yard field goal. What a weird thing that the coach would put value in that.... he must have blasted it waaay through.

Now, a 40-yarder would be more difficult. Hey, whatever works. He might have a pressure kick or two on Saturday.

you'd be suprised. from all i've seen, your average person (athlete or not) trying to place kick a football 30 yards is more likely to hurt themselves than hit a field goal. i've seen a few blind luck knuckleballs skimming over the crossbar from around 20 a few times though. in the NFL last season, 11 kicks were missed inside 29yds, and 23 missed from 30-39 (1 and 19 so far this season respectively).

trust me when i say it's not as easy as it looks. i only wish i had given it an honest effort, i was pretty good back as a kid. congrats to williams, that's a heck of a way to get on the team. my dad always teases me when we see those types of promotions - they never seem to call my name for a 50 yarder for a new house lol.

Williams kicked some at a juco he went to. Tech had beenhaving a hard time with PATs, the kickers wern't able to get the ball up quickly enough. Leech noticed that Williams attempt at the prize came of the field with a little velocity, they checked his availability and got him a number.

He was 9 for 9 on extra points last week.

You have no idea how hard it is to hit any ball well, especially a football.

Anyway, the announcers (Tech v. Kansas) mentioned this kid several times. It's a great story, but not the first of its kind.

This kid was 9 for 9 against Kansas.

The funny thing is, for the first time ever, Leach used one of his scholarships on a kicker. And they are having their worst season in that regard.

I think it is safe to say that he will be going back to walk-on tryouts next season.

The kid got the spot not because he could make a 30 yard kick, so could his kickers on the roster. Williams got the spot because of how fast his ball got up into the air. The trajectory as the TT coach put it. Tech had missed 6 PAT's by the way.

Right now he's only extra points but with the way Tech's kickers have performed, he can't be any worse at field goals. Funny note, a couple of the players on the team call him "Lynnwood" which is the name of the apartment he won free rent to (I'm sure it's because they don't even know his name).

Alright guys, wish me luck. I'm transferring to Texas Tech and I'm going to try to walk on. If they aren't impressed by my kicking powers, I'm sure they can stick me in at QB. Actually, I should try A&M. It looks like they'll put anyone on the field.

I'm not belittling kickers here - I'm just saying that I'm surprised a kid kicking a 30-yard field goal to win a contest caught someone's eye. Obviously, he can do even better than that, so good on him.

Let me clear this up. As a soccer player, it's hard to get any respect as an athlete. I hate it when people say soccer players are pansies for going down crying, getting carried off the field and coming back onto the field minutes later. If you've never played soccer at a high level, you have no idea how hard soccer players can hit; what looks like a slight touch to the shin is a lot worse than it looks. I've gotten hits on my leg that football players have never experienced. Just look up Eduardo on Youtube. It takes hours and hours of practice to learn how to control the curve of the ball, as well as getting good touch, good power, and most importantly, footwork.

I don't have any idea what that has to do with what I said, but okay. I've played many organized, contact sports - maybe that's why I felt like any able-bodied person could kick a 30-yard field goal when he's doing off a tee in a non-game, non-competitive situation.

Truth is, most people would probably shank it... but this guy clearly wasn't just some guy.
