Matt Schaub: By the Numbers

I was curious as to how Schaub compares to the other QB's in our conference. Here are Schaub's Passing Numbers and Rankings compared to the other Quarterbacks in the AFC. It can get a little tricky when some QB's don't play often or get injured, so some stats can get skewed a little. Like interceptions and sacks, when a player is injured and/or out for the year (those players included). Here's my best attempts from nfl.com/stats

Just think what his stats would be like if you gave him back half of his turnovers. If you assume he would have been just as productive with those possessions, the stats ought to shape up nicely.

It's too bad he turns the ball over against good teams. OK, I'm optimistic, so I'll rephrase that: It's too bad he used to turn the ball over against good teams.

We played the toughest schedule in the NFL the first month. I don't think anyone's going to apologize for 2 bad teams back-to-back. I guess when we beat Minnesota, Baltimore, Indianapolis, and then Jacksonville- that'll be 4 more losing teams. Wow, what an easy schedule we've got!

We are an average team right now. We are a team that consistantly turns the ball over. We are a team with a sub-par defense.

I'm giddy as hell putting a smackdown on Cincy, but I'm realistic enough to know the Texans have issues. You can throw all the stats you want out there, but it won't make up the fact we shot ourselves in the foot in at least three of our games. Damn near two more with Miami and Detroit.

Sorry if I refuse to bathe in Battle Red Kool-Aid at this time.

he's also put up the most yards of any qb against pittsburgh this season (202), and is the only quarterback to score twice against the steelers (one rushing, one passing).

At the beginning of the 4th quarter he had thrown for 98 yards with 2 INT's. We were behind 35-3 going into the fourth.

I definitely don't want to have a rehash over "garbage time", but dude, seriously? I think it's safe to assume that the Steelers laid down after the 3rd.

i considered that when deciding to post the numbers and while it was considered garbage time, we werent going against garbage players. pittsburgh still had their starters on the field so i dont mind skewing the stats. if polamalu, foote, harrison, clarke, mcfadden, taylor, and townsend are credited with tackles in the quarter across multiple drives ... i wont give you "garbage time". neither team stopped playing.

That's cool. Agree to disagree.

Just to be clear, I like Schaub alot. He's been a sight for sore eyes compared to what we had before. I'd just like to see more consistancy from him against the good teams.

Wouldn't all of us! That's the difference between good and great. Hopefully, we'll see him reach that level. Other than Peyton and Brady, and McNair for about 2 seasons, I don't recall a QB being consistantly good against the good teams for a long time.

Well what they proved to us all Sunday against the Bengals is if they win the turn over battle....get a big special teams play...they can beat anyone.This week they must prove the can block elite DTs.....some thing they, this group, haven't ever done. Not saying they can't. Just saying. On paper, it doesn't look like a very good match up for Brisiels & Myers. The must prove they can shut down....or at least slow down an elite NFL running back. We'll see. How do you eat an elephant ? One bite at a time.

Actually, we had quite a bit of success with the Henderson and Stroud duo in '06, granted this team was quite different then. However, I think we will have success cutting those guys down and stretching the run. For that to happen though, we're going to need the Wrs to block some pretty good tackling CBs... that will be an interesting battle: Griffin and Winfield vs. AJ and KW.

I think we'll do OK against the V(Y)ikes. We've held down some pretty good runners in Taylor, Jones-Drew, Addai, Rhodes, Brown and Williams. Willie Parker is the only 100yd rusher we've allowed this season. Our biggest downfall has been QB's rushing up the gut as the pocket moves past him. I'm WAY more concerned with how our OL holds up against a VERY good front 7 for the V(Y)ikes. I THINK we can do OK. The Jags and Tacks have good front 7's and we ran the ball on them pretty good. We're really a QB slide and a sto on 4th down by the D from being 5-2 this year. Oppossing teams aren't beating us nearly as bad as we're beating ourselves.

It's not like the other QBs on the leaderboard have been playing only the '72 Dolphins and '85 Bears this year. Every team gets its chipshots on the schedule. Thankfully, we seem to be putting the days of being one of those chipshots behind us.
