Default Draft Countdown's Scott Wright's mock draft: Texans take Michael Johnson (DE)

http://www.draftcountdown.com/sub/Mock-Draft-A.php

What do you think? We definitely need a DE to compliment Mario, & MJ is an outstanding athlete. But, with Vontae Davis (CB), Malcolm Jenkins (CB), & William Moore (S) still on the board (in this mock scenario), would MJ be the best value at this point? Or, would you trade down to select a LB like Curry or Cushing?

I like what I've seen so far, but would he be the right selection for us at #7?

Right position; wrong player. Orakpo -> Hardy -> Johnson. The only reason you pick Johnson is potential, and IMO Orakpo and Hardy have almost the same level of athletic ability; except the height.

They are more complete players right now with pass rush ability beyond their natural talen, and they have motors that don't quit. Johnson takes plays off, and doesn't pursue when the play goes away from him. No thanks.

However, if Johnson is a Top 10 pick it will be based more on potential than production.
From this fan's perspective, this statement disqualifies this prospect for the Texans should they only have one first round pick by the draft. We need immediate production.

Maybe they won't do it this time, but the Texans haven't been afraid to take players based upon potential alone (Okoye & D.Brown). You might even consider taking Mario as having gone against all conventional thinking with Bush & VY available.

As for MJ taking plays off, I seem to remember that same label being put on Mario as well. If he has the kind of freakish talent some are saying he does, why not take the best available talent? The Texans are still a couple of years away from being real contenders. That's plenty of time for his potential to be developed. I watched Orakpo play last week & wasn't real impressed with what I saw. But, that's just one game.

Definatly dont want Moore. IMO he is overrated as is MJ. I would rate Mauluga, Davis, Jenkins, Curry, Marino, Orokpo, Selvie, D Robinson, Chase Cofman and even C Alex Mack who are all available over MJ.

Have you watched MJ? Athletically they arent much different but Orakpo has produced more against better competition. IMO the edge goes to Orakpo for potential and production. At least to this point.

Far too early to make a realistic mock .... But with so many outstanding players left on the board in that scenario , I'd look to drop back a few spots and take one of the S or OLB's .... getting a specialist in the first round isnt my idea of getting value for the pick.

I can accept this argument, but with the talent that Texas has, isn't it possible that his playing with far superior talent helps him to put up better numbers?

I have to agree with you on this. As much as I'd love to see a real DE opposite of Mario, an extra draft pick or two would go a lot further towards our ultimate goal. We do need help at OLB & one of Curry or Cushing might be the answer.

Xavier Adibi hasn't had a chance to prove what he's worth yet... the fact that they have not put him on IR at this point in the season tells me they really think he can contribute - or that they desperately want to get a look at him in game action to see what he's made of... so I wouldn't really be crazy about taking an OLB early in the draft unless that USC kid falls into our laps. Man, what an animal.

I firmly believe you work from front to back. DLine, LBs, then DBs.... so if there's a top-rated DE on the board in the first round - not a project, not a guy the team considers risky - but a top-rated DE - I say go that way first.

I keep reading that Orakpo's draft stock is rising week after week... we may not be bad enough to have a chance at him.

If the Texans end up with the #7 pick overall, I will be both surprised and very disappointed.

That being said, if regardless of their pick the Texans exit the first round with Orakpo, Hardy or Johnson I will be very pleased with that.

I'll have to disagree with you on this one. Not about Cushing, because I don't think he is a first rounder. But Aaron Curry, WOW! This guy is Patrick Willis, ACC version. I wouldn't mind seeing him taken by the Texans in the first round.

I don't use Scott Wright anymore @ Draft Countdown. I do like how they cleaned up their web page however

As it stands right now the Texans are picking 10th not 7th & after beating the Bengals later today its going to be even higher than that so I'd forget about Michael Johnson. Anyways he is a very similar player to Jamaal Anderson taken in the 07 draft (#7 overall) by Atlanta, nice player not fareing a whole lot better than Amobi Okoye with only 16 tackles & one sack.

Brian Orakpo is a much better fit as is George Selvie both true RDE's. At this time Brian is becoming overvalued while George is undervalued. So I feel come next April that Selvie will be the more likely pick based on both fit & availability.

Aaron Curry would also be an awesome pick, say goodby to Greenwood. very productive impact player who is durable as oppossed to Cushing.

Safety would come down to William Moore, can play FS or SS. I'd say he replaces Demps and/or Ferguson so thats excellent value. Taylor Mays is a prototypical SS ala the late great Sean Taylor. He would bring a real physical aspect to the secondary & in blitz packages.

Don't rule out CB. several fine corners coming out including Alphonso Smith, Vontae Davis & Malcolm Jenkins.

bottom line- defense, defense & more defense

I can't imagine the Texans passing on a player like Rey Maualuga or for that matter him being the second ILB picked.

I would love to see the Texans draft Maualuga and move Ryans to Weakside LB. Of course, I don't want this to happen unless the Texans were to trade up to get him, because it would mean the Texans will have to loose many more games this season. I guess there is always the possibility that he drops to us but I just don't see that happening.

I agree it has to be DEFENSE in the first. I noticed you mentioned Blitz packages.... Are we getting a new and better DC ????

I wouldn't mind seeing the Texans take a chance on a guy like DE Kenny Mainor as an UFA. I'm pretty sure he is going to drop like a rock on Draft Day. He tore up his knee this year and he was suspended for 2 games following an arrest for marijuana possesion in 2007. Despite all of that, the kid does have talent. It wouldn't hurt to give hima shot as an UFA.

Actually Jamal Anderson was thte 8th pick by Atlanta. Remember we traded the 8th pick to them for the 10 th pick? It was kind of a shocker that Atlantas coach would pick J Anderson over his former teams young DT Okoye. Anyway dont see the comparison of Jamaal Anderson and M Johnson.

Jamaal was more of a freak like Mario Williams in that he was not only tall but weighed 280 lbs with great speed for his size. Micheal Johnson on hte other hand is more of a Demarcus Ware type. Tall, slender and lightning fast. He hasnt been as productive this year but with his measureables he will likely be rated highly by the scouts after the combine.

If that draft position, #7, were to come true I hope the Texans would trade down with someone and pick up extra picks in the 1st and/or 2nd rounds. That #7 draftee would be real expensive and we've got lots of holes to fil with the extra picks. If we traded down maybe we could pick up Aaron Curry a little later in the 1st round and then pick up one of the outstanding centers, safeties, or DT's coming out this year later in the 1st or really early 2nd round.

Orakpo may be a bigger freak than Mario (I know he is strength wise). If he is sitting there, you have to take him.

Orakpo + Cushing in the second would be killer
