Did it occur to anyone else that the best course of action when the fins got into postion on their last drive was to let them score on first down rather than eating up clock since they only needed 1 a FG to win! By allowing them to score quickly Schuab and the offense would have a chance to score as they did.
You dont see teams do it very often but if you have faith in your offense in a situation like that when a team is already in FG position you save yourself valuable time on the game clock. Just a random thought from the game!

I think everyone on the field understood the situation. It was a good move.

I don't think that's why Mario whiffed but I'd like to think it was just a huge act on his part to conceal that momentary lack of balance. OTOH, just imagine if Mario had come clean in there and hit him so hard that he forced a fumble. That would have rooled. Except they probably would have recovered it and gotten another first down. |

I place all kudos on a certain Mr Smith. All joking aside though, it worked out real well, whether intentional or not, and allowed us to win the ball game. |

Its a damn strange position to be in and Im not sure how the defense would feel about it. However its like was said earlier intentional or not this time it shows that its something to be considered in those rare situations where its a gimmie field goal to win the game with 2 minutes or so left.

PRIOR to the completion (when they were still in Miami territory), I was hoping our D was going to stop them. And had actually been ecstatic with Eugene Wilson and our stout defense on that 3rd down stop... until it wasn't a stop but a give back with a fresh set of downs. OK. You're right. I didn't expect our D to stop them. I was having flashbacks to the Buffalo game a couple of years ago. |

The play was basically a draw play. Pennington took the snap and ran back to Brown and handed off. It seemed to me Mario might have thought it was just fake handoff and was actually trying to go around Brown to get after Pennington - In an instant, he was faked out of his shoes when he realized it really was a handoff.... After the Dolphins kick the point-after, Mario could be seen making a gesture like he was still steaming about it all....

Our offense is horrible at scoring TDs. I would have preferred to use up our Timeouts and need only a FG with around a minute left.
It ended up working out, but if I was the coach, I would have tried to stop them

Our offense's % of scoring a TD is 20 times better than the defense's chances of stopping a drive, much less a goal line stand. But, our defense usually get's better as the season progresses. That's the way it's been since Smith has been DC. That's probably why he's still here.

We did protect it though. We got an interception that would've sealed the game. Only problem is we thought we could run it back and ended up fumbling it.

That was the right thing to do. The defense wasn't going to hold them to a FG without burning timeouts.

Let me first say I love the NFL replay on NFLN! Damn its nice.
I watched the 2 and 5 play and noticed a few things that make me wonder if we let them score after all. 1: Mario's wif just didnt look right 2: Watch how early Diles dives at the feet 3: Watch TJ fall like he was suddenly shot in the back! Seemed like alot of people jusy fell down if they had a chance. Oh well I love a good consipracy!

I think I remember a similar situation with one of the Packers' SB games back in the early 90s... worked out well that time too...

It did to me, but considering schaub's early struggles & how we had been unable to rise to the occasion in other games, i was sure we were about to take another loss whether we held them to a fg or if we let them in the end zone.
I just did not think we had it in us to do what we did that last drive......It was a hell of a way to bounce back from the Indy game. Hopefully now we can use that to build confidence for these next couple of games & the rest of the season. |

Yeah, the one that comes to mind for me is the Broncos/patriots game a few years back when Belicheat let the broncos score to preserve time for brady & co...worked for them too.
