Default Texans likely to play all home games with roof open!

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3611272

HOUSTON -- The Houston Texans will play their home opener against the Indianapolis Colts Oct. 5 in hurricane-damaged Reliant Stadium with the roof open.

The stadium's retractable roof lost five pieces in Hurricane Ike and officials said large pieces of debris had fallen into the stadium during the storm. The roof won't be fixed in time for the game against Indianapolis, but insurance adjusters and architects said it is structurally sound to host the game with the roof open.

Officials expect that all eight of Houston's home games this season will be played with the roof open.

"We are pleased with this positive outcome for our fans, our organization and our community," Texans president Jamey Rootes said. "We were determined to play this game and the balance of our 2008 home schedule at Reliant Stadium. Our fans give us a tremendous home-field advantage and we look forward to welcoming them back for our home opener."

Houston's Oct. 5 home opener will be the latest an NFL team has had its first home game since Detroit, New Orleans, Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh had theirs on the weekend of Oct. 7-8, 2001. Those games were delayed because of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

The Texans were supposed to host Baltimore on the weekend Ike hit, but that game was postponed until Nov. 9. Houston's game with Cincinnati was scheduled that day, but the Bengals game was moved to Houston's scheduled bye week of Oct. 26 to accommodate moving the Ravens game.

Houston will now play a home game each Sunday in October. The Texans are 0-2 this season and travel to Jacksonville on Sunday. They've won four straight at Reliant, dating to Nov. 18.

What I find interesting is that after the hurricane, the Texans FO stated that the stadium was never meant to be an open air stadium. This is in direct contradiction to what was said when it was first being built. But when you look at the structure itself, being built so deep and vertical, as we have found out it has iquite poor airflow in combination with unbearable temperatures on hot days when the roof is open. We were made to believe that the decision to close the roof for rain was a decision was for fan comfort/safety. The question of drainage was never brought up until recently when the roof was torn up. NFL rules allow the home team to make a decision about whether to open the roof 90 minutes before kickoff. It must remain open through the entire game unless the officials decide to close it for safety reasons. A nonlightning rain downpour does not entail a safety issue. Now we find out that the stadium cannot sustain simple sustained rain, because proper drainage is not available. And now after Ike we will all of a sudden be unconcerned with this problem. I had always enjoyed an open air stadium growing up with Arrowhead Stadium in KC. But the stadium was flared out to afford good circulation and minimized reflected/concentrated heat. It will be interesting to see how the average fan fares if October maintains a hot humid state, especially at "High Noon." Those red towels get awfully heavy for waving when their soaked with sweat.

Well, it looks like my daughter's first Texans game will be open roof. Her first Astros game was open roof as well. Good times.

Panic Not!

If you can believe a forecast that is 10 days away.....

High 85, Humidity 65%, Partly cloudy, 10% chance of rain, winds about 9mph.

Now folks, that is do-able - not great - but not 110 in the shade either.

We are Texan fans! We do can do this! Let's just hope we don't have a heat wave or a deluge.

I know that's the rumor floating around, but I seem to recall a high ranking FO type saying that this is not true and that Reliant DOES have proper draining.

I find it hard to believe that the city of Houston would allow Reliant to be built without proper drainage. Building permits for something the size of a football stadium are some of the most scrutinized documents that get processed by any city.

Well, if they expected to have the ability to close the roof during a rainstorm, then why would they build drainage to handle rainstorms for the field? If the roof hadn't been torn off, it wouldn't be an issue.

That said, I wish they would just keep the roof closed till October then leave it open from then on.

Because since the field sits below street level it is is danger of flooding when the streets around the stadium flood. The Astrodome was flooded out once in this manner. MMP has drainage why wouldn't Reliant?

A ground liner was originally built beneath the stadium playing surface. Because of the short construction deadline, it required much more piecmealing (seaming) than originally planned. The concrete floor was beveled down towards the perimeter where passive drainage ports were located. This was in anticipation of watering the grass and limited volume of weather related water. However, there was inadequate active hydraulic/pneumatic-assisted pump drainage necessary for heavy downfall.

Apparently Heinz field doesn't drain well either, maybe we're making too much of this. I've heard fans for years (at least the last few) complain about the lack of open air games, well here you are soak it in.

The stadium is still quite warm inside even when it is 60-65 outside.....especially if the sun is beating down on you.

Sitting directly in the sun with no breeze will be hot. Not Steelers hot from a few years ago but it will not be comfortable.

I like it though.

I hope the Texans are smart enough to prop open all of the doors from the ramps and the smoking areas to create an air flow.
