Default Don't just just yet. Read this first!!

After yesterday's debacle, I drank a lot of beer and my mood started to improve. Then something amazing happened. I woke up this morning. There was another day. AND, there is for the Texans as well.

We got manhandled yesterday. But it wasn't as bad as I thought. Heres why we should hold out some hope that playoffs are still in the picture:

1. Up and coming teams have been known to start slow in the past. A lot of teams that make a late season push start off slowly, before really coming together. We start the season with a string of really tough games, so we really shouldn't have expected to dominate Pittsburgh in game 1.

2. Plenty of really good teams get blown out for no apparent reason. The Chargers, who have a very good defense, gave up 200+ yards to the Vikings. The Browns got stomped by Pittsburgh last year before going 10-6. Good teams have horrible games. 1 game does not define our season. If we make a habit of this, then we can start to worry.

3. We have some playmakers on this team. Andre Johnson is back and looks ready to resume his 2007 campaign. Kevin Walter is still the blue-collar work horse we thought he was. Mario Williams is a monster, and Okoye actually looked pretty good to me out there.

4. The duo of Green and Slaton could be something. Slaton brought the speed and quickness, and Green seemed to hit the hole very hard. Dare I say it, but they both actually looked decent. If we had actually been in this game, they may have really worked out.

5. Our division finally looks winnable. The Colts defense looks terrible. Peyton looks really rusty. The Titans lost Young, and Kerry Collins is as bad or worse than him. The Jags offensive line is terrible. They gave up 7 sacks. Garrard is finally making bad decisions. I think we could easily go .500 or better in our division this year.

6. The rest of the AFC looks soft. Pitt is going to win their division. I think both the Bills and Jets could win theirs. Denver and SD are probably looking to contend in theirs.
That means our main competition for a wild card spot are:
Bills or Jets (whoever doesn't win the division)
Denver or SD (whoever doesn't win the division)
Cleveland
Those are all beatable teams

7. Our offense wasn't as bad as it looked. Green and Slaton ran the ball pretty well. When you are down 30 points, its tough to have a balanced attack. I think we'll be pleasantly surprised if the D can keep us in a game long enough to give us a chance. Our main problem was 3rd down, and thats something I think we can improve on

I agree, if we lose to Ravens at home next week, however, I may be looking for that bridge to jump off of.

Just so you know I'm not in lala land, I will post this one bit of a reality check:

If we want ANY chance of succeeding this year, our defense has GOT to improve from laughing stock to average.

We gave up 7.6 yards per attempt in the passing game. Roethlisberger only had 1 incomplete pass the entire day. He had a 130 QB rating.

We gave up 4.7 yards per rush attempt in the running game. We contained Parker early, but they wore us down late. Giving up 3-4 yards when you know they are running up the gut is inexcusable. We gave up 3 rushing touchdowns to a guy who scored 2 all of last year.

All this is inexcusable, and would have ranked last or bottom 5 in the league in 07.

That being said, there is room for hope. Our front four did get some pressure. Our safeties weren't awful. Diles looks like he is at least a solid tackler. The other guys will have to step up, especially on 3rd down, but if we can get the other teams 3rd down % down to <50%, I think we'll have a real shot

Mario got pressure, that's it. The rest did well dancing with Olinemen.

Our safety's sucked too. CC had a decent play or two, but Demps sucked in a bad way. If he happened to be near the ball he'd miss the tackle anyways.

Yes, Diles made tackles, but the problem was he was making them 5 yards downfield.

Yes, I think we will get better (couldn't get any worse), but the team sucked in every phase of the game. There isn't one person in the organization who isn't to blame.

And for all the posters who complain about negative press or no press at all........welp, Sunday was the reason why. This team has been inconsistant from it's inception.

For what it is worth...

The Patriots got hammered by the Buffalo Bills 31-0 on opening day 2003.

They went on to win the Super Bowl against the Panthers in Houston.

Here's why I didn't jump (not that I ever will):

1) It was the first game

2) It was the first game

3) It was the first game

But yea I agree with you about everything else as well.

In reality, we are probably looking more like the 2005 Texans than the 2003 Patriots.

I am actually hoping for a 1993 Oilers style turnaround. How this team responds and plays against the Ravens next week will speak volumes.

Those teams had talent. On D this team is a mess. I'm not too worried about the offense. Yesterday notwithstanding, we have the makings of a playoff offense if Carr can stop using choloform on Schaub and dragging him into the closet and then sliding into his number 8 uniform.

But the D is pathetic. Diles is certainly no better than Jay Foreman and should be a backup. Making tackles 5-10 yards down the field. Yippee. Greenwood is....wait this just in - an all points bulletin has just been posted for the whereabouts of Morlon Greenwood. He was purported to be in Pittsburgh yesterday, but nobody saw him. Even Ryans is suspect at this point.

On the line, does anyone have a clue as to what the tackle assignments are supposed to be? They look like they are just playing like the tackles in a 3/4. I'm not an expert, but the only one on the line producing is Mario. But, as good as he is, without help, it's not enough.

The secondary was toasted all day. The safety's continue to be HORRIBLE. For 7 years, the safety's have been bad. And for 7 years we continue to draft and sign the same kind of player. Not a single one of these guys can cover. They couldn't stick to Halle Barry.

Bennett kept taking wrong angles, and how many times can one guy fall down? It was so bad yesterday that Reeves was the BEST player we had in the secondary. You know it's bad when Reeves is the best.

Other than that, everything is dandy. No problems here. Move along please.

And for the love of Pete, Richard Smith needs to go NOW.

Going into the game yesterday, I wasn't expecting a win, but I thought there was a chance. Clearly things were far worse than I expected, but while it was pretty discouraging, 0-1 and getting blown out in an embarrassing manner really isn't any worse (and in some ways is better) than 0-1 and losing on a last play desperation TD pass ala the Chargers. Whether they're good or bad, we'll have lots of things over the next 4 months to take our minds off of 38-17.

It's a little hard for me to see the Defense improving much, beyond the fact that the competition will level off in the coming Weeks. If we can't do a significantly better job vs. Baltimore, it's hard to imagine doing much better against anyone. Tennessee and J'Ville should be a little better than the Ravens, but aren't among the league's offensive juggernauts. I will say that it would be better if VY were healthy, but if it's Collins at the Helm for the tacks, then those are the breaks.

Offensively, there's a little more reason to hope that things will improve. A new blocking system, a rookie, and 2 other new starters on the O-Line (compared to the opening game of '07) means it's reasonable to think things will improve, as we practice more. Also, having time to become a unit is a critical thing for any O-line. There's reason to think Schaub will improve - he's still started less than a seasons worth of games. I realize the other side of that coin is that obviously he still needs to improve, and there's no guarantee that he will. Still, I think that there's enough talent on the offensive side of the ball and enough good coaching to have faith that it will come around. Lastly, it's a 100% guarantee that we won't be facing last years #1 ranked defense in any other game this year.

The only thing I know with 100% certainty is that in a week, and in two weeks, and in six weeks, and at the end of the season, the mood on this board will be different than it is now. I don't know if it will be better or worse, but it will be different.

The most disheartening thing in the game was how their offensive line dominated our D-Line-except Mario and how their defense man-handled our O-line. I would expect the O-line to improve as they get better with the ZBS but where is the potential to improve on the D-Line?

On the bright side the corners didn't look horrible.

Good points. Face it folks, we are building a finesse team. This isn't smash mouth football, this is crumpets and tea football. These guys need an injection of Mean Joe Green in their rumps. The oline is a undersized ZBS, so how do you play against the likes of the Jags, and the Steelers and the Titans? I would like to know because it ain't happening. On the D, that line (sans Mario) is as soft as the little girl on the angel soft toilet paper, and about as good I might add.

Clearly, there were not a lot of positives to take away from yesterday's game. Because it was the first game of the season and we have no other body of work to crtique, there is (and rightfully so) a lot to be upset about. At the end of the day, as another posted stated above, whether we got blown out or lost on a last second field goal, we are 0-1 and we still have the opportunity to be 1-1 next week. If we can improve over the course of the season, one bad game (or two or three for that matter) doesn't make a season.

There is a lot of work to be done, but I do think that there are reasons to think that this game, over the course of the season, will prove to be the exception rather than the rule:

On offense, it starts and ends with the offensive line. We are young, we have new guys playing together and we are using a technique that these guys can't fully practice during the week. There were limited "live" snaps in the pre-season, so yesterday was the first full four quarters these guys played together. We may not ever be world beaters, but you have to believe with more snaps, the players individually and the OL as a unit will get better.

We know what we have at QB. Schaub has the potential to have great performances, but we have to face that he is just inconsistent. I would chalk up yesterday as a bad game for him and we know he is capable of more. Also, it is fair to expect that with improved OL play and a better running game, we can expect more consistent play from the QB.

At RB, yesterday we had a rookie playing his first NFL game on the road and a veteran RB that essentially hasn't played any real football in 1 year. Notwithstanding these facts, I thought both players showed flashed. We should expect both of these guys to play better and more confident and better as the weeks progress.

I think TE/WR is the most solid position on our team.

The defense clearly has issues, but I don't think that yesterday is the best game to evaluate their performance. Like last year, the defense was put in some pretty tough positions very early in the game...and when the offense is turing the ball over, they are on the field too long.

Mario is a beast and teams will have to game plan around him. We just need to find one additional player to be a difference maker. Amobi is still younger than most rookies in the NFL and it is fair to say that he is still waiting for the "light" to come on...similar to what Mario experienced last year. Whether it is Amobi or the coaching staff is able to find someone else to make a push, it would make a huge impact.

At LB, we know what we have with Ryans...but I was really impressed with Diles, who seemed to be all over the field. Like Slaton, this was a guy who basically had his first true NFL snaps. I think we see him really improve from game to game, which should get us 2/3 of the way there at LB.

Bennett and Demps had horrible games. We know that these guys will play better and, with confidence, can provide some leadership. We do have Dunta coming back in the middle of the season and a contract year, which will provide an immediate upgrade.

Schedule - We all knew that this team was going to have a rough go the first part of the season based on the schedule alone, notwithstanding the fact that individual players and units as a whole (as described above) were going to have a learning curve at the get go. This team, and this season, is going to be more about the second half of the season than the first half. In a sick way, the schedule may work to our advantage. Let Brown take his lumps and Slaton get his feet wet against the Steelers, who most thought we wouldn't beat any any case - so that we are more prepared for teams that we should beat later on in the season.

We need to take it one week at a time and hold on for the ride because the next month isn't going to be easy. If the coaching staff can use this time to keep the team improving, we just need enough to make a run at the end.

i didn't actually see the game but here's what i've gathered from #s and what you have said so correct me if im wrong.

2-3 guys on our defense need to be covered. Williams and DeMeco with an outside shot of Diles.

nobody has any concerns on our offense (Spike if you did, write it in fewer words, because i really REALLY dont want to read an essay on how much my team sucks) i mean the running game but that ALWAYS sucks. anything i missed?

I don't believe the other teams in the AFC South would've beat the Steelers yesterday, based on everyone's performance yesterday.
