WINSTON SIGNS EXTENSION WITH TEXANS

A league source tells us that the Houston Texans have signed right tackle Eric Winston to a five-year, $30 million extension.

The deal includes $10 million in guaranteed money.

Winston was the second player selected in the third round of the 2006 draft. His rookie deal runs through the 2008 season, and he was due to earn $445,000 this year.

He appeared in twelve games and started seven as a rookie. Last year, he started every game for the Texans.

We’re told that the deal makes him one of the three highest-paid right tackles in the league.

This is great news! We should have our textbook Tackles for many years if Brown continues to impress. Also, why don't we have a caveman smilie?

I'm glad we locked him up too but if this statement is true, do you really believe that he deserves top 3 money?
I don't study his every move but I do make it a point to look for him at least once every other series or so and while he does a good job is he really the third best RT in the league? I dunno 'bout that.

I thought he was a bit inconsistent at times in the preseason and especially when he was expected to cut or go low on an opponent but to me he has the look of a legit NFL starter and a guy still on the rise. He probably won't be "top 3" in money for too long since these contracts age in dog years. I have a hunch he will earn his money and provide us with a rock at RT for years to come.

It was a 4 year deal but he was able to void '09 through playtime incentives. He would have been an RFA after this season without the extension.

Owen Daniels is in the same boat.

One other thing I might mention is that Florio (and others) have jumped the gun on a couple of other contract announcements in the past few days so it probably isn't "official" yet - but I expect since he's quoting specific contract details that it is real.

houstontexans.com won't release the info until the contract is approved by the league office (and the Chronic won't report it until the Texans say it's so) and I'm guessing that Florio's source has access to league records and sees what comes across - even in pending state.

That is the only kinda cool looking one I could find anywhere.

Anyways, it looks like the team is finally moving in the right direction as far as the O-Line is concerned.

Even Rotoworld and ESPN have reported this "breaking news." Don't despair, though, the Chronicle should be reporting shortly that Winston's contract will be running out AFTER 2009.

Thanks for the clarification. A 3rd rounder getting a contract with less than a 4-year term didn't sound right. And thanks for the explanation about voiding the 4th year. Frankly I was always a little vague about what that "voidable" term meant when I'd see it in a contract, but this is a perfect illustration of how it kicks in to the benefit of the player (of course in this case Winston).
