Default Matching Up Against the Steelers

Man am I pumped about the season kicking off this Sunday. I can't hardly stand it. This is going to be a great year to be a Houston Texans fan.

Let's get down to business. The Steelers have one of the most respected and feared defenses in the league. They're big and strong, but what about fast? Their D-Line has two big bodies that are hard to move in Aaron Smith and Casey Hampton, and Kiesel is good against the run. They have some young athletic LBs in Woodley and Timmons. Foote and Farrior are getting a little long in the tooth, but they still have a little tread left on the tire. James Harrison is coming off a Pro-Bowl year. CB Ike Taylor is a big body who is physical, Townsend is a seasoned vet, Polamalu is Polamalu, and Clark is their version of Will Demps. Across the board, they are pretty solid. Duane Brown has been solid this preseason, but will have his hands full against Harrison. He is athletic enough to keep up with the speedy Harrison though. Myers will have to man-up also against fat man Hampton in the middle.

However, there are a couple of match-ups that are in the Texans favor bigtime. First, yes their d-line in big, but they don't move that well. If our o-line cuts them early and very often, it will tire the big men down. We can't possibly go man on man against their front on running plays and expect to be productive. They're just to hard to move. Cut em down like Axe Men and we will move the ball on the ground pretty well.

Second, although Taylor will have his hands full trying to slow down AJ, it's the two other match-ups of Walter v Townsend and OD vs Polamalu that Kubes must exploit. Walter is much bigger and physical than Townsend. He'll be able to have his way with him. Owen Daniels will be critical in this game for the Texans. We all know that Polamalu likes to play in the box. If OD gets off early production wise, that will make the Steelers have to respect him forcing Polamalu out of the box. This will in turn help open up the weakside run some (though the 3-4 is designed to take away the backside cut, the fact the Texans like to bootleg alot will keep the OLB honest and at home).

Defensively, the Texans must turn the Steelers into a pass-happy offense this Sunday. Take away the run, and I think we match up pretty well against them. I'm worried about Petey Reeves holding Santonio Holmes, but maybe (just maybe) the front-four can generate at least enough pressure to rattle Big Ben into making some bad throws. Their o-line is not as good as it has been in past years, so the defense has to attack and keep on attacking. Mario will have a big game with at least 2 sacks and 2 QB pressures. The most important match-up defensively for the Texans is Weaver v Colon. We all know that Weaver sucks in rushing the passer, but if he can at least be solid against the run, we can force the Steelers into 3rd and 6-9 yd situations. Then Smith can bring in Thompson or Cochran to rush the passer. As critical as OD will be offensively, Weaver (gulp) will be just as important defensively.

Overall, the Texans are a faster team than the Steelers and must use that to their advantage to win the game.

My final score prediction: Texans 31 - Steelers 20

Schaub has a solid outting passing for over three bills and two scores. We get one TD via special teams. And we give notice to the rest of the league that the Texans are here and ready!!!

This might sound a little cliche, but if we can stop the run and get some turnovers, we will win. If Parker and Mendenhall start running on us, it's going to be a long day.

About the only real weaknesses we can exploit are their offensive line and their special team coverage. If we can do some damage there, we can make it close enough to win. If not, well, maybe we just aren't there yet.

The Texans have risen from the bottom of the pile to the middle of the pile. Losing to someone that is on top of the pile is not shamefull, but it nonetheless is painfull.

Ah, screw it. Let's kick their bloated asses. LOL

More good news for the Texans (thanks for the link Maddict5)

Troy Polamalu: The Steelers Pro Bowl safety missed five games last year with a knee injury, had surgery during the offseason and was held out of training camp with a lingering hamstring problem. Polamalu is vital to the team's secondary, but Mike Tomlin said Polamalu likely will see limited action to start the season.

Playing the Steelers early may be a blessing in disguise from the perspective of their o-line still developing chemistry and communication with Kemo-eat-u and Hartwig as the new pieces.

Some other decent news:

Quote:
Rookie running back Steve Slaton, who has been nursing a turf toe, was given a clean bill of health by head coach Gary Kubiak Friday.

“We gave him the day off last Saturday, but he’s been able to practice every day since,” Kubiak said, saying the daily icings of his foot were just for precautionary purposes.

Also, backup tackle Rashard Butler, who suffered a bruised shoulder in the final pre-season game against Tampa Bay, will be ready to go Sunday in Pittsburgh.

Because Butler did miss valuable practice time, veteran Ephraim Salaam will be the first tackle off the bench in Pittsburgh.

I think Ephraim will be the swing guy, just watching it all week,” Kubiak said. “Whether we go with seven or eight linemen I don’t know. We’ll make the decision on game day.”
I hope the info on Slaton is accurate.......a quick "miracle cure."

On another note, Adibi with a supposed Achilles injury is inactive for this game. I say supposed because a major contributing factor in the development of Achilles tendonitis is excessive tightness of the posterior leg muscles, i.e., the calf muscles and the hamstrings. Not uncommonly this may contribute to prolonged achilles tendonitis. In other words, the hamstring injury which you may remember he sustained during camp, is likely the inciting event, and may still be ongoing.
