Default PFW's Pittsburgh vs. Houston Preview

Some Friday afternoon reading for you....

With playoff hopes following their first non-losing season, the Texans head to Heinz Field for a Week One clash with the Steelers. New Houston offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan helped lead QB Matt Schaub to a very successful preseason, and the unit will look to carry that momentum into the regular season with WR Andre Johnson back healthy. With QB Ben Roethlisberger primed for another big season, Pittsburgh also has postseason aspirations, but the loss of OLG Alan Faneca could loom large.

Texans offense vs. Steelers defense: Schaub and Johnson are the key elements in an improving Texans passing attack, but the team has other weapons as well in WR Kevin Walter and TE Owen Daniels. Their running game isn’t anywhere near as solid. RB Ahman Green is set to start after missing the past few weeks with a groin injury, but he’s not yet 100 percent. Also likely to get carries are rookie Steve Slaton and short-yardage back Chris Taylor, both very inexperienced. Houston could have trouble moving the ball against a Steelers defense that ranked first in the league in 2007. The unit is anchored by SS Troy Polamalu and also features a strong LB corps.

Steelers offense vs. Texans defense: Roethlisberger leads an offense that surprised with its effectiveness through the air last season. Big Ben threw a career-high 32 TD passes, developing a great rapport with WR Santonio Holmes. With Texans CB Dunta Robinson sidelined, Holmes could be in store for a big day. WR Hines Ward and TE Heath Miller also should be targeted frequently against a pass defense that finished 25th in ’07. RB Willie Parker remains the Steelers’ workhorse, coming off a 321-carry campaign. He’ll be spelled by first-round pick Rashard Mendenhall. Houston’s “D” is spearheaded by MLB DeMeco Ryans and DE Mario Williams, who had 14 sacks in '07.

Special teams: Both placekickers are coming off fantastic campaigns. Pittsburgh’s Jeff Reed hit 23-of-25 FG attempts, while the Texans’ Kris Brown was 5-for-5 from 50 yards and beyond. Houston has talented returners in André Davis, who took three kicks back for TDs in ’07, and Jacoby Jones. They’ll both go against questionable coverage units. The speedy Mewelde Moore will handle returning duties for the Steelers.

I'd like to think otherwise, but I'm afraid we're in for a long Sunday afternoon. Of course it's the NFL, and on any given Sunday...

Well on the good side, Hub Arkin & PFW can't pick games fur rose fertilizer. (6 1/2) line...the number hasn't moved all week. We're under everyones radar. They have them set up. What the number means is that we're getting a half a point for uncertainty. No one knows for sure sure how good the Texan's will be this season.

And I would like to thank the NFL network's play book program for giving us the full thirty seconds of pre game run by showing that you believe that it is a certainty we'll lose and therefore not worthy of any more of your precious air time. There is a reason your market share in Houston sucks. You've earned the numbers. That's our middle finger sticking out and saying....well you know what we're saying. When I see some of the drivel you guys run, I'm wondering if you got your training, football or other wise, in a San Fransisco bath house.

Default Kirwan ten Questions Pittsburgh vs. Houston Preview

Quote:
10. Are the Texans for real?

I remember when I knew we were a better team at the New York Jets, but the presence of Dan Marino and Jim Kelly made it close to impossible for the improvement to show up in our record. I feel for the Houston Texans, who have Peyton Manning in their division, as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans. They open up against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field, which is about as tough an opener as a team could have when they are trying to make a statement. Without Dunta Robinson in the secondary, the Steelers' passing game will be a challenge, but even a loss with solid all-around play will be a sign they may be for real.

A good team, even a young good team finds a way to get it done.
