So when Criss Taylor is in the game....you think they'll send a corner fire ? Their going to send everything but the kitchen sink at the youngsters until they stop it. Someone needs to give Mario a nudge this week and get on to him about Staying low and playing the trap. The Steelers will start trapping from the moment they wake up Sunday morning until they go back to bed.

The Bill Cowher/Russ Grimm Steelers would so that's a dated stereotype. This Steeler version will still run the ball but they will spread it out more.

Yeah well Vinny...I'm dated alright and you may be correct and Tomlin might be a hard head....However:

I've noticed this preseason Mario playing with his pad level high once again. As he did as a rookie. What I got is Phill Steele's assessment of the 2008 offensive line as follows:
Quote:
Offensive line: When Jeff Hartings retired in 2005 it left a huge hole in the Steeler's offensive line resulting in Rothensburger being sacked 93 times in the last two years. Pitt only had two games in 2007 which it allowed only zero sacks. And ten games where it allowed three or more, including a stunning seven sacks surrendered vs the Jets. The Steelers ended the Year 26th in sacks surrendered. .....Sean Mahan was signed last year to replace Hartings. But he failed to mount an active push at the POA. He also has trouble vs power rushers. Justin Hartwig , who was released after he missed most of the '06 season with a groin and injury & not meshing with the team will be Mahan's competition.

So we have a weak interior who gives up multiple sacks and has trouble with power up the middle in passing situations. On the other side you have a young DE who is prone to standing tall after three steps. Color me an out of touch moss back here Vinny, but before Sunday is over Mario Williams is going to have a trap play run at his arse. And I'd say if Okam has any push at all up the middle, they will do what they gotta do to get the running game started. Steelers are still the Steelers. They'll trap from the moment they wake up until they go back to bed that night. They've been doing it for forty years. Tomlin or no Tomlin. I also read where Tomlin was switching them to a 4-3 because he is a 4-3 coach....I'm still waiting on that one too.

If the Steelers rely on the "trap," it's that much more reason to blitz at least one player up the middle to keep them honest. Someone's bound to be unblocked.

Hmm, not have a pass run against the Steelers could be deadly. They have a good quarterback and a lot of really good targets for him to throw at.

Default Re: Breakdown: Week 1 @ Pittsburgh

They have weaknesses
(a) sacks - the Steelers gave up 47 and 46 in 2007 & 2006, respectively. and
(b) turnovers - Big Ben only threw 11 INTs last year but threw 23the year before. Let's hope the 2006 Big Ben shows up. Also, the Steelers put the ball on the ground 21 times last year. The bad news is they got back all but 8 of those fumbles.

bottom line - we'll need to be on our game and for them to be off of theirs.

Lets' look at it this way, this is the BEST time we could play them. Their line was a bit of a mess last year and lost a key clog so they're still learning to gel. They want to give Mendenhall a good amount of carries but that can't happen until he learns to be confident AND not fumble which he's not there yet. Sweed is also going to be an important addition and he's definitely not going to be counted on much in Week 1.

The more I look at them, the more I like our chances. Pittsburgh has a lot more issues than people realize. And I agree that this is the best time to play them.

Well the Texans are probably the healthiest they'll be this season. So, we should at least get a good game. I just hope Mendenhall doesn't have a big game, I'm sure a few posters here would commit suicide.

11 - INTs by Houston defense in 2007, the lowest mark in the league

25 - Total Takeaways by Houston defense, the same number as the Pittsburgh D

0 - # of winning streaks longer than 2 games by Houston in 2007

I hope our pass rush is as good as Tomlin and Co. think it is. If not, it's going to be a long day.

Maybe this season will be the one our defense WAS just playing vanilla in the preseason. We'll soon find out.

Quote:
“They have three young (former) first-round picks who are very talented in their four-man front,” said Tomlin. “That group is led by Mario Williams, who looks like the first pick in the draft. He is a talented player, very disruptive, athletic and powerful. He’s in the backfield a bunch. They have a variety of different line stunts that are very difficult to pick up, not only getting hats-on-hats but once you get hats-on-hats, you have to win those battles. They have some talented guys.”

From ESPN's Gene Wojciechowski-

29: Your Week 1 Upset Specials
Tampa Bay, a 3½-point dog, beats New Orleans on the road. Houston, a 6½-point pooch, beats Pittsburgh at Heinz Field.
30: Three quarterbacks who will make biggest improvement from a season ago

#3. In the injured-a-year-ago category, the Texans' Matt Schaub.

39: Dear Geno, I have the first pick in my draft. Who should I take?

First three wide receivers: Moss, Andre Johnson, Owens.

That's a great point to make but remember it goes both ways. The Steelers are the healthiest they'll be all season as well.

Well I hope both of these predictions are right.

If Matt Schaub is to make a large improvement from last season it will naturally start with the Steelers. Not only because it is the first game we play, but because the Steelers have, IMO, the best defense in the league. It is very likely that our running game will be controlled or maybe even dominated, so Matt Schaub will need to be superb on Heinz Field on Sunday.

A very interesting matchup should be Andre Davis vs. nickelback Bryant McFadden. They are pretty equally matched but if Andre Davis can get the better of McFadden it will help our offense tremendously.

All the teams we face this year will probably healthier than us. Until the Texans prove otherwise, of course.

I think some of the Steelers fans that pay attention to everything (pre-season, off season, FA, Draft, etc) are worried about their offensive line troubles that they've been seeing. I'm hoping that the Texans D-line can exploit what might be a weakness, but I just have a feeling that we'll be leaning heavily on the pass game to carry us to the end, and not the defense.

I expect the D-line to be like the Astro's bats this year. Wildly inconsistent, one player who looks like a golden god for a little bit, and probably a big end to the season when it might not matter.

God that was hard to type.

An interesting stat that I don't believe has been mentioned is that the Steelers have won their last 5 straight season openers (including last year at the "changing of the guard"). In fact, going back to 1970, they have won 22 of 38 openers.

BTW, the Texans are 3 wins 3 losses in their season openers, with 1 win and 1 loss in away openers.

readin up on some steeler fans opinions they seemed to be worried about their guards....if this is the case and Okoye starts to have a good game I expect them to shift inside thus leaving Mario one-on-one...and I know TexansNation would love that to happen!!!!

remember now, guys, the sacks that ben took last year weren't all the o line's fault. there were many instances when ben held onto the ball too long. i watched tape of last season. i estimated that ben was SOLELY responsible for about a third of the sacks.

Good spy work 3TP!
of the stats they listed on this link I like this one best of all
Quote:
9 - Fear factor, on scale of 1 to 10, of the Texans defensive line. We may not play a better front four all year as a matter of fact, given what's happened to the Giants' top pass-rush threats this offseason. More on this later, but isn't it going to be fun to watch all the doubt about our O-Line come creeping back after Week 1, even though we might be facing our toughest pass protection test all year?
OUR pass rush...?
Feared?!?
its amazing what Mario's being on the cover of ESPN the Mag will do to the minds of the under-informed...
