Breakdown: Week 1 @ Pittsburgh

TexansSeminole

Hall of Fame
First off, let's look at the 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers:

They have an excellent coaching staff. Tomlin is entering his second season with the Steelers and so is offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. The Steelers were very efficient on offense last year in Arians first year as the offensive coordinator. Big Ben had his best year yet, and was second in passer rating last year behind Tom Brady. They also return Dick Lebeau as their defensive coordinator who guided them to third in pass defense, third in rush defense, and first in overall defense.

The Steelers offense:

Big Ben (Pro Bowler) was a beast last year. 3,150 yards, 65% completion percentage, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. However he was sacked 47 times last year, so if we are going to stop Big Ben and this offense we will need to get pressure. This will be a good game, as the first game of the season, to get a pass rush going.

Practically all of Big Ben's targets last year returned to the team this year. Santonio Holmes is developing nicely into their #1 WR, and a true force with his speed. He accounted for 52 catches last year for a whopping 18.1 yards per catch. That adds up to 942 receiving yards with 8 touchdowns. This guy is legit and we will need to game plan around him, as he will stretch the field. Hines Ward is still around and tough as ever. He had 7 touchdowns last year with 71 catches and 732 yards. Only 10.3 yards per catch is the lowest of his career, however he is still a very effective possession receiver and blocker. Limas Sweed and Nate Washington will compete for that #3 WR spot and they are both good receivers.

They also have solid TE's in Heath Miller and Matt Spaeth. They can both catch it, and Heath Miller was a huge target for them last year catching 47 passes for 566 yards and 7 touchdowns. He has a similar skill set as Owen Daniels but he is alot bigger. 6-5 250.

Their running game is really the scariest aspect of the offense, as always. Fast Willie Parker (Pro Bowler) returns but with a new sidekick, Rashard Mendenhall. They also have Gary Russell as a third running back. He was the third running back in that nasty group of RBs (Laurence Maroney, Marion Barber) with the Minnesota Golden Gophers. We will need to control this stable of running backs or we will have no chance in this game.

Their offensive line looks like this:
LT Willie Colon (18 starts) LG Kendall Simmons (76 starts) C Sean Mahan (52 starts) G Chris Kemoeatu (2 starts) RT Marvel Smith (103 starts). They lost Faneca but they should still have a strong solid group.

The Steelers defense:

This is the strength of the team, and arguably the best defense in the league.

The Steelers run the 3-4 as we all know so it all starts up front with the 3 down lineman Aaron Smith, Galveston native Casey Hampton (Pro Bowler), and Brett Keisel. This is a very effective front 3, especially Hampton in the middle. He and Vince Wolfork make up the top 2 nose tackles in the league in my opinion.

Their linebackers are scary. They have Woodley on left outside spot behind A. Smith, James Farrior and Larry Foote on the inside, and James Harrison (Pro Bowler) on the right outside spot behind Brett Keisel. Lawrence Timmons, the young linebacker out of Florida State and former first rounder is a key backup behind the outside linebackers. Bruce Davis, a rookie from UCLA, should also provide some depth behind the inside linebackers. Look for Davis and Timmons especially to get some playing time throughout the game, keeping those fast and instinctive linebackers fresh.

Bryant McFadden, Deshea Townsend, and Ike Taylor are three solid corners to have. Look for Townsend and Taylor to start again this year with McFadden as a nickel back. Troy Polamalu (Pro Bowler) is their star in the secondary. This guy has arguably the most range of any safety in the league. Schaub will have to be smart when throwing the ball in his direction, because Polamalu is one of the biggest playmakers at safety this league has. We may see a change at FS after Anthony Smith did his talking last year at the wrong times, but it is also possible to see him back in that FS spot this year.

Special Teams:

They still have Jeff Reed as their kicker, and Daniel Sepulveda was their punter this year until he had a season ending injury. Mitch Berger is now their punter.

Nate Washington and Melwelde Moore are their returners and neither are particularly dangerous.

Yes guys, this game is going to be a hard one. We have got to run the football on these guys and keep their running backs in check or we are going to put our QB in some bad situations. This is the kind of game where you can get a QB knicked up. Hearing that in the first game is hard, I know, but without a running game we might end up seeing it.

Ahman Green needs to come out and atleast contribute because a rookie like Slaton is not going to be able to carry our team against a FAST defense like this one.

Matt Schaub should be fine if he has a running game to support him. Their corners are the weakest part of their defense, but still not a weakness. Maybe our receivers can have a nice opening day against them.

Our defense needs to step up against the run. This preseason hasn't looked exactly promising when it comes to our run defense. I will look for our whole front 4 and their backups to really set the tone in this game. DeMeco should be successful with a good push upfront. Hopefully Greenwood steps his game up as well, or I look for another linebacker to come out and push him for time.

Our secondary will have to be smart when dealing with Holmes, Ward, and Miller. It will be a true test for this secondary.

This whole game will be a test for this team. We are facing a Super Bowl contender this week, one that has an strong identity (tough defense, run the football).

Let's set the tone for the season. :fans:

Excellent analysis. The only point I would have to disagree with is that if the preseason has any predictive value at all, that Steelers OL may very well be ONE OF OUR POSITIVES.

I have to agree with Cloak on the offensive line of the Steelers. They are hurting and are not playing well as a unit. Last year they allowed 47(?) If I remember correctly) sacks and this year they haven't shown that they are able to do much better allowing 11 in the preseason.

Parker should get the most carries but Mendenhall has produced fumble-itis and needs to prove he won't fumble every 10 carries.

If our D shows up (which is what I expect) and we are able to produce pressure on Ben, we will be OK.

the key is stopping the run...if the Steelers have second and third and short all day long they won't have to protect as long or run elaborate patterns when they pass the ball.

I agree completely.

The Steelers have alot of weapons to throw short passes to. Heath Miller vs. Greenwood is a mismatch in their favor and Hines Ward has a knack for picking up those types of first downs.

i THINK justin hartwig is their starter at center... don't quote me on that, though. former titan.

I know Hartwig is on the team, but Sean Mahan started all 16 games and 2 postseason games for them last year at center after signing as a free agent so I assume he is the starter. You could be right though.

Hartwig is our starter. he's a decent upgrade over Mahan........but that's not really a compliment seeing as how over 20 of the sacks last year were accredited to Mahan.

i'm excited to see this game. i hope your O-line can bring it, cause our LBs may very well kill someone this year.:specnatz:

i just want it to be known i loved woodley coming out of college... he's a beast.

20 sacks! That's crazy. Good luck to Hartwig.

I agree Woodley is a good player.

I'll tell you what though, watch out for Lawrence Timmons. That guy earned the Hit Stick two years in a row coming out of spring at Florida State. He can bring the wood.

:gun: I didn't even think about that matchup. Thanks for the heads up.

Troy Polamalu on the defense is a pest so look for him to make some plays for the Steelers. That being said he is coming off of a hamstring injury and I think his 1st game back is against us. He's a player though.

isnt hampton waaaaaay overweight? will he even be playing?

They have him listed at 325 pounds, which may look valid if you're looking at him from the wrong end of a telescope. But the Steelers have given up on his getting to the "ideal weight" and began allowing him to return to practice with the team about 2 weeks ago. Throwing a cheeseburger or two behind their DL may reverse his directional inertia and impact in the upcoming game.:gun:

Iam not going to lie this looks scary ...........

but how good are they on the deep ball we all know if the run game fails us it will be up to the OL and Matt to gun sling it seahawks STYLE !!!

but that will also be a negative becasue that will tire out are defense

Also, left guard Chris Kemoeatu just started practicing with the team about 2 weeks ago after recovering from a partial triceps tear. An OL needs the triceps to help push off the defenders as he comes out of the crouch. He probably still has weakness in his play, and probably accounts for another facctor involved in the weakness that has been noted in the Steeler's OL.

Excellent analysis TexansSeminole. I know the Texans want to establish the run game but realistically, it has been missing in action throughout the whole preseason. I think they will use the short to intermediate pass game to set up the run and from there, play action. That should give us the best chance to control the clock and keep their offense off the field.

Pittsburgh is a hard team to play, especially on the road. They lost all of one home game last year.

The Texans were a stinky road team last year, winning only 2 of them. Some of those problems were due to injuries at key times of the season, but it is hard for a team to learn how to consistently play well on the road.

Here's a nice piece between FanHouse Blogger JJ Cooper and our Diehard Chris from Houston Diehards. It's mostly Texans focused, but has a little Steeler flavor.

Behind Enemy Lines: Five Questions With a Texans Blogger

As much as we worry about our secondary, I am very worried about our run defense. Maybe they unleash something new once the regular season is starting, but given what I've seen the last two years, color me skeptical.

the problem is if you cannot stop the run without loading the box you set yourself up to give up big plays. We are going to struggle if we have to bring a S low to help with the run because Reeves has the look of a cornerback that always needs someone lurking over the top. I can see them running from a 3 wr formation quite a bit, then busting us when we are in single coverage worried about the run too much.

Great pre-view Seminole. So is Okoye matched up with the guy with the two start experience ? This is the game they need Okoye to show up and throw his chubby legs over that damned wall and pull himself over.

Green, Taylor, and Slaton meet Palomalu....and please meet him often on pass plays.

So when Criss Taylor is in the game....you think they'll send a corner fire ? Their going to send everything but the kitchen sink at the youngsters until they stop it. Someone needs to give Mario a nudge this week and get on to him about Staying low and playing the trap. The Steelers will start trapping from the moment they wake up Sunday morning until they go back to bed.

The Bill Cowher/Russ Grimm Steelers would so that's a dated stereotype. This Steeler version will still run the ball but they will spread it out more.

Yeah well Vinny...I'm dated alright and you may be correct and Tomlin might be a hard head....However:

I've noticed this preseason Mario playing with his pad level high once again. As he did as a rookie. What I got is Phill Steele's assessment of the 2008 offensive line as follows:
Offensive line: When Jeff Hartings retired in 2005 it left a huge hole in the Steeler's offensive line resulting in Rothensburger being sacked 93 times in the last two years. Pitt only had two games in 2007 which it allowed only zero sacks. And ten games where it allowed three or more, including a stunning seven sacks surrendered vs the Jets. The Steelers ended the Year 26th in sacks surrendered. .....Sean Mahan was signed last year to replace Hartings. But he failed to mount an active push at the POA. He also has trouble vs power rushers. Justin Hartwig , who was released after he missed most of the '06 season with a groin and injury & not meshing with the team will be Mahan's competition.

So we have a weak interior who gives up multiple sacks and has trouble with power up the middle in passing situations. On the other side you have a young DE who is prone to standing tall after three steps. Color me an out of touch moss back here Vinny, but before Sunday is over Mario Williams is going to have a trap play run at his arse. And I'd say if Okam has any push at all up the middle, they will do what they gotta do to get the running game started. Steelers are still the Steelers. They'll trap from the moment they wake up until they go back to bed that night. They've been doing it for forty years. Tomlin or no Tomlin. I also read where Tomlin was switching them to a 4-3 because he is a 4-3 coach....I'm still waiting on that one too.

If the Steelers rely on the "trap," it's that much more reason to blitz at least one player up the middle to keep them honest. Someone's bound to be unblocked.

Hmm, not have a pass run against the Steelers could be deadly. They have a good quarterback and a lot of really good targets for him to throw at.

They have weaknesses
(a) sacks - the Steelers gave up 47 and 46 in 2007 & 2006, respectively. and
(b) turnovers - Big Ben only threw 11 INTs last year but threw 23the year before. Let's hope the 2006 Big Ben shows up. Also, the Steelers put the ball on the ground 21 times last year. The bad news is they got back all but 8 of those fumbles.

bottom line - we'll need to be on our game and for them to be off of theirs.

Lets' look at it this way, this is the BEST time we could play them. Their line was a bit of a mess last year and lost a key clog so they're still learning to gel. They want to give Mendenhall a good amount of carries but that can't happen until he learns to be confident AND not fumble which he's not there yet. Sweed is also going to be an important addition and he's definitely not going to be counted on much in Week 1.

The more I look at them, the more I like our chances. Pittsburgh has a lot more issues than people realize. And I agree that this is the best time to play them.

Well the Texans are probably the healthiest they'll be this season. So, we should at least get a good game. I just hope Mendenhall doesn't have a big game, I'm sure a few posters here would commit suicide.

I hope our pass rush is as good as Tomlin and Co. think it is. If not, it's going to be a long day.

Maybe this season will be the one our defense WAS just playing vanilla in the preseason. We'll soon find out.

“They have three young (former) first-round picks who are very talented in their four-man front,” said Tomlin. “That group is led by Mario Williams, who looks like the first pick in the draft. He is a talented player, very disruptive, athletic and powerful. He’s in the backfield a bunch. They have a variety of different line stunts that are very difficult to pick up, not only getting hats-on-hats but once you get hats-on-hats, you have to win those battles. They have some talented guys.”

From ESPN's Gene Wojciechowski-

29: Your Week 1 Upset Specials
Tampa Bay, a 3½-point dog, beats New Orleans on the road. Houston, a 6½-point pooch, beats Pittsburgh at Heinz Field.
30: Three quarterbacks who will make biggest improvement from a season ago

#3. In the injured-a-year-ago category, the Texans' Matt Schaub.

39: Dear Geno, I have the first pick in my draft. Who should I take?

First three wide receivers: Moss, Andre Johnson, Owens.

That's a great point to make but remember it goes both ways. The Steelers are the healthiest they'll be all season as well.

Well I hope both of these predictions are right.

If Matt Schaub is to make a large improvement from last season it will naturally start with the Steelers. Not only because it is the first game we play, but because the Steelers have, IMO, the best defense in the league. It is very likely that our running game will be controlled or maybe even dominated, so Matt Schaub will need to be superb on Heinz Field on Sunday.

A very interesting matchup should be Andre Davis vs. nickelback Bryant McFadden. They are pretty equally matched but if Andre Davis can get the better of McFadden it will help our offense tremendously.

That's a great point to make but remember it goes both ways. The Steelers are the healthiest they'll be all season as well.

All the teams we face this year will probably healthier than us. Until the Texans prove otherwise, of course.

I think some of the Steelers fans that pay attention to everything (pre-season, off season, FA, Draft, etc) are worried about their offensive line troubles that they've been seeing. I'm hoping that the Texans D-line can exploit what might be a weakness, but I just have a feeling that we'll be leaning heavily on the pass game to carry us to the end, and not the defense.

I expect the D-line to be like the Astro's bats this year. Wildly inconsistent, one player who looks like a golden god for a little bit, and probably a big end to the season when it might not matter.

God that was hard to type.

hey everyone. i'm new here. i just wanted to say good luck this week. i know it's going to be a good game. you're a great team and we have a lot of respect for you guys here in the burgh. i'm a member of a steeler forum and all the guys and gals there are giving you much respect too. here's to an great, injury free game! good luck, guys!

An interesting stat that I don't believe has been mentioned is that the Steelers have won their last 5 straight season openers (including last year at the "changing of the guard"). In fact, going back to 1970, they have won 22 of 38 openers.

BTW, the Texans are 3 wins 3 losses in their season openers, with 1 win and 1 loss in away openers.

readin up on some steeler fans opinions they seemed to be worried about their guards....if this is the case and Okoye starts to have a good game I expect them to shift inside thus leaving Mario one-on-one...and I know TexansNation would love that to happen!!!!

remember now, guys, the sacks that ben took last year weren't all the o line's fault. there were many instances when ben held onto the ball too long. i watched tape of last season. i estimated that ben was SOLELY responsible for about a third of the sacks.

http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2008/9/2/605875/steelers-vs-texans-a-look

11 - INTs by Houston defense in 2007, the lowest mark in the league

25 - Total Takeaways by Houston defense, the same number as the Pittsburgh D

0 - # of winning streaks longer than 2 games by Houston in 2007

0 - # of winning streaks longer than 2 games in Houston Texans franchise history (let that one sink in for a moment

Good spy work 3TP!
of the stats they listed on this link I like this one best of all
9 - Fear factor, on scale of 1 to 10, of the Texans defensive line. We may not play a better front four all year as a matter of fact, given what's happened to the Giants' top pass-rush threats this offseason. More on this later, but isn't it going to be fun to watch all the doubt about our O-Line come creeping back after Week 1, even though we might be facing our toughest pass protection test all year?

OUR pass rush...?
Feared?!?
its amazing what Mario's being on the cover of ESPN the Mag will do to the minds of the under-informed...

I'm not saying the texans will win, but its a winnnable game. They can attack the steelers by balancing thee 3-4 with 12 personel ( 1rb,2wr,2te) formation or going 3 wide putting pressuure on they're sub par db's. The texans wil have to pass to set the run with Schaub taking the 8yd out route lebeua gies up in his 3 deep zone. When he blitzes, the cbb bails and gives that route up all day banking on the qb being impatient. Also they need to run 5 screens this game.
Defending Pittsburgh is a chalenge because of Ben breaking contain and making plays. The good news is their line isn't good. If mario and okoyye can get some good pressure, everyone on defense need to keep their man in frontof them. Parker isn't 100% and mendenhall is a rookie with fumbling issues.. They need tto stop the run with the front 7.

Good to see you here and welcome.

I know your fans at your board have a lack of respect for our team and fans but they need to remember that we are the same fans that were there during the Steelers best years while we were hating on Bradshaw and pulling for Earl. Those were some epic battles.

As far as our team and the game, you guys win on paper but fortunately the game is played on turf. We believe that heart sometimes wins games you shouldn't and that is why I think the Steelers will lose.

If the Texans insist on ineffectively running the ball when they can’t, instead of using their pass prowess to advantage........don’t be surprised when we run-run-PASS-kick, only to find that when we finally do decide to PASS, we FAIL.......to beat the Steelers.:gun:

Good to see you here and welcome.

i'm not sure what steeler board you are reading but the one i frequent respects your talent. i have no beliefs that this will be an easy game for us at all. i don't pay attention to what anything says on paper either. and you're right, heart wins many games. but what gives you any idea that the steelers lack heart? we have a lot of heart. always have.
