S. McClover
Jesse Nading (P/S)
Anthony Weaver
Mario Williams

DTs
Tim Bulman
Gabe Long (P/S)
Frank Okam
Amobi Okoye

LORK's right about one thing, other than Mario and maybe Amobi, who in that list commands any respect?
Maybe blue collar guys like Bulman and Cochran will step up on defense like Walter and Davis stepped up on offense last year.
Maybe Amobi and Okam will reach their "potential".
Maybe.....

McLover seems like a perfect fit for a DE within Smith's scheme. He can use his athleticism to drop back in coverage.

As his weight stands now, I would expect that he would fall in the category of pure pass rusher specialist with possible OLB hybrid. I don't know that he could be trusted in run situations. Kalu is the only light weight DE on the roster and he is serviceable in the run, but he is the wiley veteran. All of our other DEs pack significantly more weight. For those who may not know, McClover left college as a junior because he had to support his family. His playing weight in his 2 years at Auburn was somewhere between 245 and 250. He has actually since then brought his weight up to his present NFL weight of 262. How much more weight he can pack and maintain his speed is an important question, unless we keep him as a "specialist" only. This is especially important as height and weight play a big part in determining the proper position for some DE/DT tweeners as well as DE/OLB tweeners.

I'm sure they were using the term "scheme" very loosely

...its a "defensive scheme" in the same sense that Richard Justice is a football journalist.

It's no shock we picked up a youngster that shows some pass rushing potential since no edge rusher has really distinguished themselves on our roster other than Mario. Stopping the run is the element most of us overlook when discussing our lack of a pass rush though. If you can keep teams in 2nd and 3rd and long you have a better shot at getting to the QB. If you constantly give teams 2nd and 3rd and short, teams don't have to take long drops or run long patterns.

Some here are better at the X's and O's than I am, but the reason we do not stay in those types of situation is because this team can not defend the screen pass for crap. This preseason I saw so many screen passes that went for 15 + yards.

Two predraft reports predict him going in either the second or third round; how/why did he fall to the 7th?

Well said:

Factors that inhibited the Texans pass rush in 2007 in no particular order:

1. Player ability to do it properly.
2. Run defense.
3. Crud secondary.
4. Texans playing from behind because the silly offense kept spitting up the ball last year, especially early in games. Playing from behind means that other teams don't have to throw to catch up.

As a part of the whole picture, Kubiak mentioned the defensive line imbalance at the end of the season. Basically, TJ/Okoye playing the same position, Weaver being more run minded, no big run stuffer fellow.

Things that could help that line would be:

1. Okoye improving from year one to year two.
2. Okam ending up being a run stuffer in the middle.
3. Mario Williams getting much better.
4. That the coordinator can make the defense look less vanilla. That they said they had to simplify things last year due to injuries in the secondary. Do things stay predictable for opposing offenses?
5. If the offense can get a running game, and turn into a points machine that takes time off the clock and also gets opposing teams taking more chances to catch up.
6. Ray Rhodes works some miracles with the secondary. Already there have been reports of him helping with line calls up front, so maybe his presence can have a positive effect.

My prediction is that the Texans defense will look better only against teams that have sorry quarterback play.
