Default Alex Gibbs

Everyone is saying fire the defense coordinator...
I say alex gibbs should go back to retirement also...our running game was alot better last year, than this year...
I remember reading in the chronicle, about how Alex was a genius & guarantee we will run the ball effectively. B.S.
The interior offensive lineman have been a bust so far, especially studdard.
Chris Myers - is not getting it done either. Chris White, looks alot better @ center.

ummm... what?
4.3 yds/carry against one of the better defenses in the league. Did I mention that was with our 3rd string RB and a rookie? And one of our starting OG out.

and you say fire Alex Gibbs?!?

say.... is this Richard Justice?

Unlike Smith, Gibbs also hasn't been here long enough for us to judge anything. The linemen are still learning how to do it his way. Also, the reasons mentioned above. We ran well against a good D, or at least considering how good it is.

This has been said ad nauseum, but it takes time for offensive linemen to get their coordination with each other down, when learning a new scheme such as Gibb's is.

its practice man, practice....try not to read too much into these games. Evaluation and basics dominate these games. Coach Gibbs is the last thing we should be worried about.

I think you are mistaken. Coaches, even great ones require time to have an effect on the players they are coaching. I have used Buddy Ryan and his one season stint as the Oilers DC as an example since Gibbs got here and I'm going to do it again. For the first few weeks of the 1993 regular season the Oilers defense looked worse for his addition (and that of Wilbur Marshall at LB) rather than better. Only after an entire preseason and 3-5 weeks of the season did things really come together and by the end of the year the Oilers were one of the best defenses in the league.

That was defense which is widely considered to be easier to transition into a new system than offense. The Texans tell us that much of what we're doing was already in place before Gibbs got here. I don't really know how much of that I believe. With the Texans it's hard to tell sometimes how much of what they say is true and how much is propaganda. I've kind of taken a position of thinking the Texans are only lying to me when their lips move, the rest of the time they mean what they're saying. I do know that we're doing all of what we're doing with the following "circumstances" in place.

We have new running backs. Slaton is new, Taylor might as well be since he wasn't available last year. Of the guys we can actually depend on only Darius Walker played any time with us last year. Green and Brown are useless and even if they weren't made of dried twigs and toilet paper Green hasn't played since the first half of last year and Brown is new.

Our running backs don't know our line very well and our line doesn't know our running backs very well either.

Our offensive line has a new center (Myers) and played Friday night without Pitts and with Studdard who is not a starting quality guard at this point in his career (and it's debatable whether he ever will be) along with a rookie LT in Duane Brown. Our RG has changed from Weary to Brisiel, an undrafted free agent. Weary was coming off his best season when he went down and would have been a great fit for this scheme prior to his injury. Brisiel might be playing well but we lost something when Weary went out.

Yes, the hated "gel" word is where I'm headed. It takes time for the coach to get everybody working together. It takes time for the offensive linemen to get good as a group. Inexperienced players need game reps to get experience. They all need to gel. Green and Brown can't gel with everyone else while sitting on the sideline giving interviews about how they're "day-to-day". They've both been, up until now at least a waste of money with no tangible benefit from either one.
