Default Re: Notice

Every year:

The D line owns the O line at the beginning of training camp.

The O line catches up about the last week going into preseason--and we think both are doing great.

Preseason comes and we got no running game and no pass rush.

Regular season starts.

The running game is anybody's guess, but we'll get our pass rush goin' about week 9. Meanwhile, D Linemen will still be dropping back into pass protection, while LBs (Ryans notwithstanding) run up to the line and get hammered by O Linemen. That's on pass plays. On run plays, those D Linemen dropping back will be driven 10 yards back while our run D looks like....well, actually, butter is more difficult to cut through. Thanx, Richard.

I don't know how good a DC Richard Smith is or can be, but I do know a famous coaching expression:

"You can't make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t."

The Texans have one of the worst groups of outside linebackers and safeties in the league. Those are the guys who normally blitz, but our OLB's and S's aren't very good at getting to the QB. And except for 2002, the Texans have always been poor at rushing the passer. Richard Smith might be to blame to some extent since he is drawing up the plays, but it isn't like he has all the tools in place to run the defense his way either.

I think our linebacker corp may actually be good. Certainly, CThompson is a playmaker when he's in the game, Adibi and Diles both have potential as well. So, I'm very encouraged by that.

That being said, the blitz packages better become a lot more disguised once the season gets underway. Any yes, unless Harrison and Barber turn out to be playmakers, our S position doesn't have much.

most schemes are vanilla in week 2 of the preseason....so I can't really read too much into blitzing or not blitzing right now. I did see Chaun Thompson get lit up in coverage so he may not be a viable linebacker and only an edge rusher...donno

Well, I don't know about Thompson in coverage either, but remember that Kubes said his hamstring still wasn't right. Also, other than Demeco, our LBs are usually lit up in coverage.

By the way, with all the concern about Brees' effectiveness against us, I am encouraged by the fact that the windows for the WRs downfield appear to be very small this year- we're pretty much there and that's something to be encouraged about.

Besides Demeco, this team has terrible blitzers. I can't even recall a time when another LB or S blitzed and actually made it through the line.

this is only a hunch but I'm really impressed with the physical nature & speed Zach Diles brings, which could result with him packaged in some blitz schemes. some players have a nose for the football & he has that skill/trait. we'll just have to see

No doubt. That's why I think the D-line played a little better than given credit for...

Ummm, I guess nailing the QB's arm while moving forward is different than actually tipping the ball.... (????)

per the NFL.com play-by-play....

(3:12) 9-D.Brees pass incomplete short left to 12-M.Colston [59-D.Ryans]. PENALTY on HOU-35-J.Reeves, Defensive Pass Interference, 18 yards, enforced at HOU 45 - No Play.

What doesn't show up in the stat sheet or the play-by-play was that Mario - despite being held and chipped by the RB (I think) - got to Brees and hit his throwing arm as Brees was trying to get the pass away.

And that's not the only time he caused Brees to throw before he was ready.
Brees is even better than Schaub at sensing the rush, getting rid of the ball, and not taking a sack.

All that to say that we're not great but we're not awful either.

He hit his arm, not the ball. The call was correct.

Mario hit Brees' arm, he didn't touch the ball. And no one else touched the ball. Therefore, no tip. Pass interference.

Yep - DVR'd it back & forth hoping for the tip...it wasn't there. Reeves didn't play the ball correctly and was clearly into the receiver before the ball arrived. Easy call for the ref.
