Default Whats up with Gaffney

I am not denying the guys abilities. He is a very good receiver, but what is going on with him lately? He has almost always been the go to guy on 3rd down, but I havent seen much of him lately. Has he taken over the #2 position or something?

Davis has been taking all the passes the last couple of weeks so he isnt getting any looks. The read is going back to: AJ aint open, Davis dump down...

aj's production really slips when davis is the focus. that dump pass to davis every second play is really getting annoying.

Yeah that 1 pass DD got against the Jets sure did distract Carr from Gaffney.

OK that was smart ***. But here is another reason, Gaffney's best stretch was the 5 games from Oakland thru Denver--a period DC got sacked 10 times. He has about disappeared in the last 5 games--a period DC got sacked 17 times. Almost twice as much pressure equals DC running for his life, making poorer progressions and dumping the ball to DD.

What's up with Gaffney? Well, there's one ball and it's either going to be carried by Davis, thrown to AJ, or thrown to Davis. Gaffney (like everyone else not named Andre Johnson or Domanick Davis) has the bad luck to not be the first or the last option on passing plays. Those are the only options Carr is using at this time (and for the past few weeks it seems). Whether that's by design, due to lack of time to make his reads, or Carr simply being jittery and in a hurry to get rid of the ball I don't know for certain. But that's what's happening to Gaffney (and Armstrong, and Miller, and Bradford, and...)

In the Jets game, AJ was open...

Ok, so with the pressure the read for Carr has gone back to: AJ then Davis dump down...

only reason D.D has been getting so many catches is a lack of time to throw. Maybe if the line could do what we pay them to do, than gaffney, miller, bradford etc....... would get more looks. And johnnson hasnt really been getting as many looks as i'd like him to get, but it all goes back to the o-line

Or maybe it goes back to the RB, for example:

with Travis Henry at RB, Drew Bledsoe was sacked 19 times in 4 games (4.75 per game)
with Willis McGahee at RB, Drew Bledsoe has been sacked 15 times in 10 games... (1.5 per game)

yeah could be it seems to me D.D never stays in to help protect Carr, and that when wells is in carr does get more protection. Maybe the coaches need to not send D.D out on passing routes every play we dont run the ball. BUT the o=line still plays a major factor in no protection !

Isn't Tiki Barber having a great season? How many times have Warner and Manning been sacked?

Well, teams can line up man-to-man on their WRs so that gives them extra people to blitz:

Ike Hillard - 335 yards
Tim Carter - 182 yards
Amani Toomer - 678 yards

Or maybe it goes back to an OL starting 2 new players gelling after the 1st six games of the season--1st six, 24 sacks--last 7 games, 8 sacks.

So now DD is responsible not only for Carr's poor progressions, Palmer's game plans but also (even though he is the safety valve) for Carr getting sacked? Bottom line, DD is told to chip someone and release--after that is the responsibility of the OL, Carr and Palmer for what happens.

Since when has Carr ever spread the ball around with any consistancy other than at the start of this year and last year for a 3 or 4 game strech? It's lock-in. lock-in, lock-in, dump off.

This is not a direct answer, but in a way in the 1st halves of the last two seasons.

Gaffney receptions:
2003 1st half--24, 2nd half--10
2004 1st half--28, 2nd half so far--5

Carr has quite the 1st and 2nd half of the season split going as well:

2003
1st half--59% comp %, 6 TD's, 8 INT's, 75.2 QB rating
2nd half--49% comp %, 3 TD's, 5 INT's, 58 QB rating

2004
1st half--64% comp %, 9 TD's, 5 INT's, 104.8 QB rating, 2.5 sacks per game
2nd half--58.7% comp %, 4 TD's, 7 INT's, 66.5 QB rating, 3.4 sacks per game

Now after last season I thought Carr's progress should be judged only on his 1st half last year because he got injured so the 2nd half "didn't really count." Seems to have had quite the slide for the 2nd half this year as well without any acknowledged injury. He has had more pressure but a drop from 104.8 to 66.5?

It might have something to do with the fact that the coaches know the offensive line leaves much to be desired. DD is sent out every play because we have to have the dump off option because no one, carr and coaches included, know if car is going to have time to even look for a reciever. In the situation we are in right now DD is a woderfull person to have in the game because he has good hands for when our O-line takes a play off.

The quick observation or comment when looking at those numbers would lead me to think that it is because we practice all pre-season and off-season and come out the gates fresh from camp and are doing things right. Once we get into the season our young players start making mistakes and start falling into bad habits as you game-plan more than refine technique when the season starts to unfold. Instead of getting better we start to fall into bad habits and NFL teams make you pay for that.

Vinny, what do you attribute that to? Coaching lapses? Just dumb players that can't remember what to do? Fatigue?

.....all I wanted to know is what his deal was. Isn't there a D.D. causes Carr to get sacked/no D.D. doesn't cause Carr to get sacked thread somewhere else.
