Default Is Sage the best back-up in the NFL ?

Just doing a quick scan in my head, I think he is...

That's a pretty valuable asset to have at such an important position...

Sage could be a good game manager for a good team. I don't really think Garrard is any better than Sage, personally. It's just that Garrard has been in the same system for a while now, and he was surrounded by a very good team. He wasn't asked to do much. If you put Sage on that team, I think he could do as well, or even better than Garrard.

So, barring some out-of-nowhere Kurt Warner/Tom Brady occurrence again, I'd say yes, he is the best backup in the league right now.

Speaking of Warner, he has to be considered among the best backup QBs heading into this season. Todd Collins stepped in late last season and helped get Washington into the playoffs. He should get some consideration. But yes, Sage should be mentioned with these guys as the top backup QBs in the league.

If not THE best, then certainly one of the best for "our Offense".

He's a gun-slinger like Favre was, but w/o the same level of arm-strength and accuracy.

On pure, God given talent alone, Lienhart is the best back-up in the NFL.

As far as performance, Vince Young is a top 5 back-up quality.

Honestly I think this offense has a lot to do with Sage's success...

I think he's a good QB, but I just wonder how he would translate onto other teams and how much other teams that have considered him as an option have pondered that...

Is Leinhart still the backup there or is it Warner? Whichever it is, I think the other probably qualifies as "best backup"

Leinart was named the starter by Ken Whisenhunt last week. But, he's on a short leash.

Yeah if that's the case, then I'm saying Warner is still the best backup in the league.

An objective (although not necessarily correct) source says he is.

I mentioned PFW '08 Preview issue's position rankings in another thread, and they have Sage ranked #20 in the NFL among QB's. Highest ranking backup on the list regardless of Arizona (Leinart's #21, and Warner's #24).

I'm not putting this out there because I consider it gospel, just to reinforce the fact that our high opinion of Sage is more than simply homerism.

Oh - FWIW, Schaub was #16, and VY was #17.

Yes, but he has yet to play a down and until he proves himself how could you even think about saying him. I was only a fan of what he did at Notre Dame.

I'd have to go with Warner as the best back-up.

Sage is next in line with Charlie Batch and Todd Collins. All three are about on the same level, IMO. Their team's production doesn't fall off much - if at all - when they have to go in in relief. They have shown that they can "make plays" when called upon and as such, they have "LockerRoom Cred".

And in two out of three of those cases, the back-ups have a home team following that believe they should be "The Guy".
I'm sure you can guess which two.

Here's a link to an ESPN.com article that ranked the top 64 QBs in the league. It was posted right after the playoffs ended, just before the S/B.

The NY Giants signed a pretty decent backup in the offseason. If Eli goes down, the Giants are in pretty good hands, since they are covered by pretty white gloves !!
