Default Shocker: ESPN hates our pick!!

hopefully it works out as well as our last 'terrible' pick

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft0...ohn&id=3369696

Quote:
2. Houston Texans: Things went horribly for the Texans, who wanted one of the top offensive linemen. Branden Albert or Chris Williams would have worked, but they were gone, so the Texans traded down. They might have been able to pull out cornerback Mike Jenkins, but he went to Dallas with the 25th pick. The Texans ended up with Virginia Tech offensive lineman Duane Brown, whom many thought was a second-rounder

Clayton knows his stuff. his write-up is spot on, and taken from a purely analytical point of view: there were no players they needed available at 18, so they traded down, and drafted a player that most people believed to be a second rounder. doesn't mean he'll suck or anything.

Sounds like someone is trying to pass their opinion off as a fact.

Its been stated repeatedly that we wanted Duane Brown from the start..and we traded down because we thought we could still get him later in the first.

If we get two solid 3rd rounders...this move should look better.

Still A LOT of potential starters out there to be had.

Like Mario and Reggie Bush ? So is Clayton guarnteeing that Brown would of been there at the 79...no. Is clayton or ESPN going to pony up if we lose nother QB to injury ? no. Did Clayton project eight, count them eight, OTs would go off the board in the first round ? no...

His write up is spot on if you say after six years & one franchie QB, OLT wasn't a critical need...beyond that Clayton guesses just like the rest of us. He's no different from McClain. Unless someone tells him, he don't know. Basically the disney sport crew were behind the curve. They missed the run on the tackles....that is the story of this draft...Clayton and the rest of the disney sport crew missed it.

It's been stated by Smith, Kubiak, and McNair that Brown was the guy they wanted from day 1, so that right there blows the entire "hell in a handbasket" theory by Clayton.

Oh well, when ESPN hates our picks, we tend to have our best drafts so keep hatin ESPN.

Clayton apparently didn't talk to our front office. They're all elated.
- We got one of the OTs on our board - who was handpicked by our new OL coach.
- We get to pay him #26 money instead of #18 money
- and two extra picks to boot.

How are we losers again? I don't get it.

It is one thing to target 1 specific guy when you are picking 1st but at 18 you are setting yourself up to reach which we did later. You are saying we wanted Duane Brown from the start and that is who we focused on. I don't buy it. I believe he is the consolation prize in a draft that clearly worked against us getting any of our top players. He may end up being great but stop trying to sell it like we were after him all along. Where are all the Duane Brown threads prior to the pick?
Of course Kubiak and Smith are going to ell you Brown was their guy. What else are they going to say?

I think we had them ranked Albert, Williams, then Brown, but 3 guys we wanted were 4 picks from us and wham, all gone. So we target 2 more and move down, Jenkins and Brown, then the Cowgirls swoop in and take Jenkins, leaving us with Brown. Im allright with the pick, but damn would Alberts or DRC been nice.

It was pretty much a nightmare scenario for the Texans except for Mendenhall and Jenkins falling. I guess they were not impressed enough with either player (I wouldn't have minded either) to take them.

SO in the nightmare they just go ahead and pick the guy that they have a chance at with a trade down.

I'm not convinced that Jenkins would have been on the list for the Texans. He's had an off the field incident that we know Bob McNair doesn't like to see.

As for the comment about how the Texans couldn't have been targeting Brown because there were no Duane Brown threads about him, I'm sorry to say I'm pretty confident that neither Rick Smith or Gary Kubiak use this board. We'll never have a clue as to what the Texans draft board looked like. Most fans use the internet, the magazines, the various mock drafts to gage an idea of who the team would target. Unless we have the amazing ability to chage to a fly and get on the wall in those offices we don't know what they are looking for. The coaches, scouts, and GMs spend their time watching game film and talking with these players. That's an advantage most of us don't have.

Brown was showing up in the 2nd or 3rd round of the mocks because nobody thought 7 other teams in the 1st round were going to take a tackle. Limas Sweed didn't go until the end of the 2nd round. He had a 1st round grade. Does that mean everyone in the 1st round messed up? No. Nobody was looking for a WR in the 1st round. The mocks are fun, but they can't know what is actually going through the heads of the decision makers for the teams.

I was initially against it because I wanted to see them move back and get more picks and then try and take him. If you watched the press conference they discussed that and sounds like they turned down an opportunity to do so. If he was really the guy you wanted you had no choice but to take him at 26. There was no guarantee he would be there later. Smith and Kubiak have yet to let us down. I'm on board with this and ready to make a playoff push.

You make a lot of sense with your remarks. Very good !
I think the reason for the frustrations that alot us have, including myself,
is that Brown was not as highly publisized and was not really included in the top tier of OT prospects who would be suited for Gibbs ZB style, which would be C.Williams, Ryan Claydy, & Brandon Albert. Of those 3 we really could only hope that Williams or Albert would be there, especially Williams. Just remember, even though Albert was considered a very good prospect, he had played only 2 games as a tackle wheras our guy has started and player THREE (3) YEAYS as an OT and the last all at LT. So there was a lot of tape
and Gibbs and the Texans must have gotten a lot of looks at him and felt that the potential was there.

Yup, just talked about it with Reali's (sp?) group.

Said we got scared because tackles started falling off the board and reached.

Yeah and the Lady on that panel, blasted us about Williams/Bush again, then another guy on the panel took issue with her, then Reali changed the subject before he could finish.

We should just come to the fact, that ESPN will never like anything we do.

Well that's something that they have to say. They aren't going to come out and say "Yes, we really wanted Clady, Williams or Albert to fall to us but since neither did, we took Brown. Not our first choice, but we made it".

Well, we now know the goal for the 1st day: LEFT TACKEL, PERIOD! Thus, they traded down for the extra picks when the two possible picks were gone. If CB Jenkins would have been available they would have picked him. But nevertheless, LT was their main goal in the 1st round. Their 3rd plan was that if Jenkins was not available they could still get a quality LT and two extra picks (3rd and 6th).

The problem with the article is that its taking into account the 1st round ONLY. It's not looking at the big picture: How good will Brown be? And how good will our extra 3rd and 6th rounders help our team?

Come on John Clayton! You are better than this. This is before we even know how well Brown will do.

This article is more about woudda-coudda. Than, what can happen.

He's only using the 1st round as the end-all-be all of the draft. That's where he writes "Things went horribly for the Texans" falls short. It implies exactly what you say it doesn't. That Browns performance is not even taken into account; i.e. it assumes he'll suck.

I would have agreed with the article if he would have said that the first day was average in terms of strategizing our *best possible picks." But "HORRIBLE?" Please...
