Default Brandon Albert

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/sco...denalbert.html

Height: 6-55/8 | Weight: 309 | 40-Time: 5.17

Strengths: Excellent size with a big frame and long arms...Fantastic athlete...Good quickness and agility...Strong and physical...Is nasty with a killer instinct...Mobile with decent range to pull and get to the second level...Smart with good awareness...Excellent pass blocker and also gets a decent push in the run game...Real versatile..Leader with great intangibles...Tough and durable..Still improving and has a lot of upside.

Weaknesses: Still has some work to do in the technique department...Can be inconsistent with his leverage...Motor runs hot and cold at times..Not a dominant run blocker...Has to work on holding his blocks and finishing....He is still relatively new to the game.
Notes:
Did not begin playing football until his junior year of high school in 2002..Was also a standout basketball player as a prep...Stepped in as a true freshman and was a three-year starter for the Cavs ( 36 games )...Named a team captain as a junior in 2007...He started a couple of games at left tackle as a junior in place of an injured Eugene Monroe and could possibly play outside at the pro level as well...First-rate talent with exceptional physical tools....Already a great all-around player however his best days are still ahead...The rare offensive guard who is a legit first rounder.

Pro-Day workout @ Virginia (March 18)
Eleven prospects worked out outdoors on Field Turf. Seventy five people were on hand to watch, including Rams head coach Scott Linehan and Rams personnel man Tony Softli. Also in attendance were five tight ends coaches and seven offensive line coaches, including Joe Bugel from the Redskins and Steve Loney from the Rams.

» TE Tom Santi (6-3¾, 251): Ran the 40 in 4.68 and 4.65, had 18 reps in the bench press, ran position drills and kept his combine numbers for everything else.

» OL Branden Albert (6-5¾, 316): Ran position drills and kept his combine numbers for everything else.

» DE/LB Chris Long (6-4, 266): Kept his combine numbers for everything else. Virginia head coach Al Groh put him through linebacker drills and did not include defensive line drills, which he will do at a later date.

Beerlover sorry to say I don't think were going to get our shot a Mr.Albert he seems to be flying up the draft board, I know the draft is still three weeks away but Alberts stock has done nothing but rise since the combine and now after his pro-day I've already seen a Mock that has him going fifth in the draft to KC.The kid is the real deal and teams are starting to see all of his upside value. SUCKS I realy what this kid in a Texans uni.

That's the feeling I'm getting as well, I think he's long gone but I said the same thing about Amobi Okoye last year. (of course we're 8 spots further back this year too).

This makes me wish all the more that Michael Oher had not gone back to school (for our sake).

despite all the pessimism this is the year to aquire our franchise LT. if it becomes necessary trade up, I don't care if it costs us Sage, but I digress. As stated by a SUPER MODERATOR when have FIVE OT's been porked I mean selected before the 18th pick? We're still in a good position for one to be there @ #18

I def. want that LT but it depends how much we have to give up. If the LT turns out to be a Joe Thomas for us...it'll be worth it.

To recap on these LT's that may or may not get taken before us. Jake Long, Chris Williams, Ryan Clady, Jeff Otah, and we'll throw in Branden Albert. As stated that's 5 which has probably never happend. Does Jeff Otah even fit our team? If he was available would he even be selected? If the answer is no, then we shouldn't worry about him because I see him as being on the bubble of going before or after us.

Jake Long most certainly will. Clady? great chance he does but some issues are starting to creap up with him but doubtfull to drop him to 18 at this point. Branden Alberts stock has been really rising. Chris Williams I think we'll be lucky to get.

Teams NEEDING OL/LT help, regardless of pick/value:
Miami, St. Louis, Atlanta, Oakland, Kansas City, Denver, Carolina, Chicago, any others?

Jake Long is a lock to go no further than KC. The others I doubt go that high. That leaves 3 players and 3 teams, some OL may not be BPA. So we could have a shot actually... are there any other teams before us that could select one of these LT's? detroit, arizona, minnesota? jets, patriots, bengals, saints?

Thought about it a lot and as I've said i think one of those guys drops to us. Def not Jake Long but I think we have a legit shot Williams drops to us. The second Tier Tackles in this draft aren't bad either and the reason they have dropped is an incredibly deep class. Guys like Sam Baker and Anthony Collins could be taken at the top of the second making it easier to take someone they have rated higher.

Past KC I'll explore some. Funny for some people talking about ZBS and picking T later Clady to the Broncos? I think this depends on how high they are on Ryan Harris. Do they want help on the outside for the now emerging Brandon Marshall? DL could use help.

Carolina oddly might take Alberts with the talk of taking someone so they can move Wharton inside. Why not take a G that has all-pro potential instead? Got help for WR now but Williams can't tote the load himself. Mendenhall? Someone opposite Peppers might re-jump start the D.

I think Otah might be a better fit for Chicago. They could solve their Qb problems with getting Brohm here. Top two WR are gone Muhammad and Berrian. Young guys but when a converted Devin Hester is your main target without a legit #1 I see problems. Malcolm Kelly might be a good fit if he gets past the Bills. Sweed?

Cards perhaps. Lions could use Oline help but If Harvey is there might take a good look but factor in the Matt Millen effect. Vikes doubt it.

I honestly feel that Albert will be on the board when the Texans select. In this scenero I hope the Texans run to the podium.

As precautionary measure would play the other teams along like Pittsburgh/Seattle to ensure a trade possiblity as back-up plan just in case player X is or isn't available

neither guy has distinguihed himself this off season. I was thinking like that also...move back pick up one of the two....

glass half fulll one of the top three ZBS guy falls to us...including the now reported turnip, Clady. Glass half empty...and dove tails with our luck at drafting the position btw... they all go off the board by the eighteen.

Don't have the ammo to move up...told you that second second round pick was going to sting more than the first one. Target Rich board and we have no move up ammo. Hello King Dunlap.

I was thinking about Sam Baker last night. Ooh that really sounded bad... But back to the point- what are the chances he could actually be this year's Eric Winston? If I remember correctly, Winston was regarded as a very good olineman but dropped because there were injury concerns and whatnot?

Baker had a 'slight' knee problem, and it didn't really sound like he performed all that well at his pro day. All the 'experts' are saying even in a ZBS he may not be suited for Left Tackle... Throwing this out there, but could we see him slip into the 3rd round?

I don't think it's likely but it could happen. Baker didn't have a bad as injury as Winston did. His injury also happened at a bad time. Some teams could feel he's more of a tweener between guard and Tackle. Question is if we land in a situation where he does drop further into the second what are the chances we roll the dice and trade up for him?

My other thought with these possible second round Tackles is teams might be more willing to make a move in the second then gamble with a first.

I'm thinking Baker would be like Tony Hills a solid if not spectacular LT. I think the latter could be had in 3rd but not necessarily where we pick. If we can't get Williams in 1st, no trade down happens, I could go after Hills without fear in 3rd. That is also with caveat that we have no 2nd.

I thought Baker was very impressive in his one-on-ones during the week of practice at the Senior Bowl. Very good feet, very fluid in his pass-blocking.
But even though he's not had a catastropic type of injury like Winston, his
career at USC has been plagued by injury: knee in 2006 (or maybe 2005 ?),
and he missed quite a bit of time in 2007 with a hammy problem.
Those big boys up front are involved in heavy contact on every play, so
if durability was a concern in college its a definte red-flag for the NFL game.
**
On the subject of one-on-ones, wonder how many of those matchups C. Long
and Albert had in practice while at Virginia together ? Wouldn't you like to have the tapes on those skirmishes ?

OL Sam Baker (6-4 ½, 308): Ran the 40 in 5.50 and 5.50, had a 28 ½-inch vertical jump, 9-foot long jump, 4.92 short shuttle, 8.02 cone drill, had 29 reps in the bench press, ran position drills.

non-athletic, late 1st rd. measureables for an NFL LT. I do like his hand placement inside the pads, he's been well coached so his starting level grade is higher than Albert, Otah & Cherilus. does he have their upside or as high of ceiling, heck no but would be a serviceable LT for a long time. His footwork is good enough to play zbs & his strength = Joe T (29 reps to 28 reps).

ideal aquisition point late 1st early 2nd.

this is interesting. one factor in the Patriots success is the continuity along the line of which Sam Baker would be a perfect fit (too bad they don't have that 31st selection anymore) he definently fits the mold check it out-

Sam Baker, 6045 308 5.28 29 reps. ?

Matt Light, 6046 311 5.29 26 reps. 2nd rd.
Logan Mankins 6041 307 5.06 21 reps. 1st rd.
Nick Kaczur 6044 319 5.28 22 reps. 3rd rd.
Stephen Neal 6040 305 undrafted

C Dan Koppen 6035 297 5.43 27 reps. 5th rd.
C Chris Myers 6045 298 5.11 25 reps. 6th rd.

Steve Hutchinson 6051 315 5.15 31 reps. 1st rd. 17th pick
Brandon Albert 6055 316 5.17 23 reps. ? 1st rd. 18th pick

Both Mike Maycock and Pat Kirwan have Albert going to the Patriots in the top ten, and have Chris Williams falling to us at #18 in their most recent mocks.

I wouldn't mind taking Albert, if Kubiak thinks he can make the switch to LT; and not turn into another Leonard Davis.

And other interesting predictions/evaluations from these NLNetwork guys are that Kirwan has Vernon Gholston going #1 to Miami and Maycock says Mendenhaul & not McFaden is the best back in the Draft. So are these guys
just more enlightened than their competition when it comes to evaluating players or behind the curve ? I'm looking forward to Gosselins first mock,
which should be out before long now since we're into April. I doubt that he's got Albert in the top 10 because he's usually pretty conventional, but we will see ?
It all boils down to whether or not teams are confidant Albert can play LT in the NFL, because nobody is drafting him top ten (and the Kubiak/Smith not at #18), if they think he's basically a guard with little potential to be an NFL OT.

Here's an interesting exchange from John McClain's blog in the Chronic with a poster regarding Branden Albert.

Quote:
Bigbob: ...This is why for me Albert is a better fit.He has played guard and tackle. He not only blocks people!he pancakes them!6'7,315,quick,an nasty.Oh yeah!...

Da General:
BB, Albert won't be coming to the Texans...
In another reply, McClain said the following:

Quote:
Da General: I can tell you who I know they won't take, but as far as who I think's going to be there, I could tell you and be wrong. I did a mock draft for NFL.com and the top five DL were gone, top four LTs and top four CBs. I took CB Aqib Talib.
So McClain says he can tell us who the Texans won't take, and one of those players is Branden Albert. File that away, FWIW.

At least he went into an explination of why Albert will not be coming to Houston.

I seem to recall that he just about guaranteed that the Texans would be taking Vince Young with the #1 pick a couple years ago. File that away, FWIW. Another reason why I really don't pay much attention to Johnny Mc.
