Default Awtysst had a few minutes on his hands Mock

I had a few minutes on my hands so I made up a mock. Why? Why not!

I will say a couple of things up front. First, I did not take an elite OT in this mock. The reason is because I believe that Brandon Frye is our LT if the future. I believe that he is the prototypical LT we have wanted and after getting in some time with Gibbs he will be a starter. I think that Salaam will start the year and as the season progresses, Frye will get some time. By the end of the season or next season, I expect to see Frye in there. Second, I did not take a stud Center either. Again, I see our great center already on the roster in Greg Eslinger. So, please keep that in mind as you look at this mock.

With this mock I went after positions I thought we REALLY needed to upgrade: CB, DT, RB, DE, and G. I also tried to find some diamonds in the rough with picks 6 and 7 and think I did.
Ok, Rip it apart!

1. Antonine Cason CB-Arizona
I think he is the most solid safest CB pick. While McKelvin and Rogers-Cromartie might be flashier and might end up as better CBs, they are also high risk-high reward. I think Cason would be a natural fit in our D.

3. Red Bryant-DT-Texas A&M
One thing that we sorely needed was a Space Eating DT to play alongside Mario and Okoye. Red fits that bill. At 6'5 330 lbs this guy can definitely take on a couple of Olineman and will be a presence in the defensive red zone.

4. Mike Hart-RB- Michigan
Some people say he is too injury prone, but I say if he is in a two back system he will be healthy enough to play. He can catch, he goes right to the hole, and has breakaway speed once he hits the hole. Put him in a two back system where he doesn't need to carry the rock 25 times a game and he will be fine. I envision him getting 12 carries per game and thats just fine.

5. Chris Harrington-DE Texas A&M
What is something we have always said that we want opposite Mario? One thing is that we want a high motor guy that gets into the backfield and makes the offense have to look at him. I think Harrington would bne a solid pick here. He needs to work on technique but you cant teach a high motor. All he does is give his all on ever y single play and makes most of his tackles in the backfield. I say lets take him and teach him. He would look great in a Texans uniform!

6. Chad Rinehart-OT/G-Northern Iowa
Here is where you need to find your gems and Chad is certainly that. I see him being able to step into a OG position by mid season and being a starter there for years to come. I don't know why, but when I see this kid I think of Logan Mankins, and thats not a bad thing at all. Low risk but very high reward potential.

7. Dennis Dixon-QB Oregon State
I know some of yall have disagreed with this one before but I think he has incredible value at this spot. He needs to put on some weight, but he has the potential to be a really good QB. Right now he is only 205 but he is also 6'4 so he could stand to add about 20 lbs worth of muscle on. Even if he does not work as a QB he could be a really good converted WR. If he can become a solid backup QB, we might be able to trade Rosenfells and get some picks back. If not, this is a 7th rounder, I say low risk potentially HIGH reward.

Um, Ok. I think Winston is great at RT, Eslinger will be our C, and Pitts is fine at LG. I think Briesel can play RG and I drafted someone to back him up/eventually start there. I also think Frye is our LT of the future.

What did you think of the mock itself though. You only seemingly addressed that I did not take a bunch of O-line with my mock, but did you really delve into it and read and think about the picks or was it a simple "this mock sucks because he didn't do anything for our O-line" reaction.

Intresting mock indeed. Love the Cason pick, not fond of the rest of the draft. Red Bryant was a great DT at A&M but we're not really hurting for help on the d-line. I'd actually love for us to consider Tony Hills from Texas or even safties DeCoud from California and Tyrell Johnson from Arkansas State with our 3rd round pick. Mike Hart at #4 would be a good selection. Not fond of Harrington at #5, would rather take a chance on Tommy Blake from TCU. Rinehart's slow for our zone scheme, so I don't like this pick. Maybe consider OG Jerry Zuttah from Rutgers or Kerry Brown from App. State. I would like the Dixon pick in the 7th should Rosenfels be traded, otherwise he'll be slated to the practice squad and thus, picked up by another team.

Thanks for taking the time to give me something to read and as always, I respect every Texan fan's opinion.

my post was referring to the problems we'd likely have with salaam, eslinger and briesel on the same line

i dont watch the aggies so i cant rly say if your picks are good or not but i dont think space eating DT is a 3rd rd pick need though.. cason's an ok pick- im not crazy about him

why are you so high on eslinger? you'd think they would have kept him in denver if he was a decent ZB C

That was my initial "wtf?" McKinney played very well before he got injured, theres no reason for him not to start if healthy.

Also, there is hope for getting Charles Spencer back. The talk is that he could get moved to guard. We'll see.

Yea, and I haven't heard anything about his recovery from it. Hopefully he can come back in and start, but the Texans have never had good luck with injuries.

See here is where you and I differ. I think we have a HUGE need for a space eating DT. How many times have we had a situation where its 3rd and 2 or 3rd and 3 and the offense ran it right up the middle and got 5? How many times was it 4th and 1 and the offense took it right up the middle for the 1st down? Too many times in my book. As the game progresses all extra plays wears down a defense. Also we seem to be going to lighter, quicker, more athletic LBs. If we do that we need a big boy up front. Red is the perfect fit in my mind.

I think Rinehart projects to be a guard and could be a great one for us. He has a great explosion, a good hand punch, and decent lateral footwork. He has good balance, works hard in the weight room, and gives it his all at all times. I think he would be a great late pick for us.

I dont think Dixon is ready to start(what you need of your backup) so I wouldnt trade Rosenfells. I think he could be our third QB. He can learn what he needs to do and can pick up all that he can from Rosenfells. In a year we can see if he is a potential backup. If not, we can try him at WR. If not cut him. Remember this is a 7th rounder, so if you can get some depth this low you are doing pretty darn well!

Very true, nothing frustrates me more than a 3rd and 4 and we give up 5. I still would hate to give up the opportunity to draft a good LT/FS/OG. You like Frye as our future LT however I don't think he'll see the playing field at anything other than a guard. He's really strong and quick on his feet....just doesn't have the length to play tackle IMO. Bryant would be a solid pick, but I differ in who I'd go with. Now Bryant in the 4th....I say jump on that if he's available.

I am not counting Spencer because I dont know what he will be like. If he can go back to LT great. If he goes to Guard, great. But we have to pretend as if he is gonna get cut so that if he does come back its a bonus. I think Frye and Eslinger are going to surprise a whole lot of you.

Ok, I'll run with this one. Dixon wouldn't be a bad investment in the 7th.

I like the mock. I wouldn't complain if it played out this way.

I agree a space eating DT would be a valuable addition, letting Okoye and TJ concentrate on getting upfield and after the passer.

The only pick I have issue with is the RB pick. Not sure we need another back.

BTW if your positive and/or wishful thinking was enough to get us a great oline, we would have the best line ever. Hopefully your right on Frye and Eslinger.

I've never gotten on the Cason bandwagon. He just doesn't wow me. My thinking based upon our free agent moves is that we'll either address the LT or CB position with the 1st pick, or trade down. And, we might do both.

I see us going after Williams (OT), Albert (OG/OT), Cherilus (OT), or trading down with the 1st to snag Cherilus & a 2nd round pick. With the 2nd, we'll snag Tracy Porter (CB), or Charles Godfrey (CB).

One thing that we sorely needed was a Space Eating DT to play alongside Mario and Okoye. Red fits that bill. At 6'5 330 lbs this guy can definitely take on a couple of Olineman and will be a presence in the defensive red zone.
I agree we need an upgrade at DT over TJ. I'd look to see TJ traded on, or by, draft day. I think we can get a DT later in the draft.

With the 3rd, I'd snag Kevin Smith (RB).

I'll look for defensive help with the 4th pick. I'll go in this order:

Frank Okam (DT)
Craig Steltz (S)
Ezra Butler (OLB)
Marcus Harrison (DT)

What is something we have always said that we want opposite Mario? One thing is that we want a high motor guy that gets into the backfield and makes the offense have to look at him. I think Harrington would bne a solid pick here. He needs to work on technique but you cant teach a high motor. All he does is give his all on ever y single play and makes most of his tackles in the backfield. I say lets take him and teach him. He would look great in a Texans uniform!
Jacob Hester (RB)
Cory Boyd (RB)
Eric Bakhtiari (DE)
Will Arnold (G)
Bruce Hocker (WR)

Here is where you need to find your gems and Chad is certainly that. I see him being able to step into a OG position by mid season and being a starter there for years to come. I don't know why, but when I see this kid I think of Logan Mankins, and thats not a bad thing at all. Low risk but very high reward potential.
Brian Witherspoon (CB)
Caleb Campbell (SS)
Kevin OConnell (QB)

I know some of yall have disagreed with this one before but I think he has incredible value at this spot. He needs to put on some weight, but he has the potential to be a really good QB. Right now he is only 205 but he is also 6'4 so he could stand to add about 20 lbs worth of muscle on. Even if he does not work as a QB he could be a really good converted WR. If he can become a solid backup QB, we might be able to trade Rosenfells and get some picks back. If not, this is a 7th rounder, I say low risk potentially HIGH reward.

Mike Fladell (G/OT)
Brian Johnston (DE)
Richard Clebert (DT)
