"In practices this week, the Texans had all three of their top outside linebackers on the field in their substitution package, with Babin and Peek on the outside and Wong moving inside to the spot normally occupied by Jay Foreman. The tinkering is designed to get Peek on the field more often."
Today's article from Houston Chronicle Looks like Wong might be playing in the ILB position this week. May be. Doesn't necessarily mean that he will be there all day. |

Includes news that Capers has been experimenting with a LB configuration that includes Babin, Peek, Wong, & Sharper all on the field together.

This makes me happy. All I want is MORE PEEK. He doesn't have to be on the field every down - just more than he is now. A lot more.
I liked the article. Peek is definitely not a whiner. We really need that intensity on the field. I couldn't disagree more with Vic Fangio, though. I always said that I'd rather the Texans overpursue in the backfield than underpursue.

If a guy overpursues then the QB knows there is somebody back there, but is not always quite sure where. VS. underpursuing where the QB has complete control of the situation and can easily move to the side or rollout to avoid early contact.

OK. Well I think Capers has said in the past that he wanted to get his 5 best
OL guys on the field together. I guess he more or less did this when he moved Pitts to guard to make room for Wand @ LT. It seems logical to use the same philosophy re. your LB group. |

something else maybe worth noteing about linebackers and in the chronicle...the summary section mentions jonathon vilma and how the texans really really liked him...............something to remember come draft time because vilma isnt that big and we all seem to have some mixed ideas on what size and or qualities an inside linebacker in this defense is supposed to have.

This reminds me that Kendrell Bell is a FA in the off-season. when healty he has be a guy who can make plays on the inside. the key words are "when healthy," but casserly takes more risks on guys with injury history than most GMs. |

haha yeah i expected to see GeorgeW all over this thread
! But i like the idea, Babin is a play maker and needs to get more PT ! And HOPEFULLY this will improve our pass rush just a "little" bit !

I like the move. We might as well let both Peek and Babin start together since that is supposed to be the long term plan.

The move will only be seen in passing situations. I am not going expect to see Wong roll out at the Buc and stay there most of the game. I think Peek will be our weak side starter next year.

Fangio gave Peek a backhanded compliment yesterday when he said something like "He goes 100 miles and hour. We just need to make sure he's going a 100 miles an hour in the right direction." Players have intimated over the years that Fang's system is a bit complex. The coaches can get too smart for themselves IMO. They need to remember these guys are not all like Kailee Wong (as far as intellect) and they should put them into schemes (beyond 3rd down pass rusher) where their natural ability and instinct can thrive. Most players learn by doing - and making mistakes from time to time. Let him play and make a few mistakes. I think the upside potential outweighs the downside risk re Mr. Peek. The old cliche about history repeating itself is appropriate re how we have
not retained the services of our OLBs: first we lost Jeff Posey 2 yrs ago, then Steve Foley over this past off season, and if we don't play Peek a lot more (in addition to paying him a lot more), we're also gonna lose him when he becomes free to bargain with other teams. That's not a good record for a team that runs a 3-4, because arguably OLBs are the most precious commodity of the 3-4 D. |

Posey was starting so we didn't lose him due to non-playing. Foley was picked up off the waiver wire and we tried several players at the OLB that season. He wasn't even here the whole year.
Peek has been a project that started at times his first season and got picked on and tore up when in the game. He is coming along EXACTLY like a player should when being groomed to start (ie flashes of great play is something he is SUPPOSED to show). If not he would not be such a hot pick. Instead of being excited to see an up an comer...we complain. What smart fans we are.

I guess I don't see smart or not smart when I read through these things. I see people expressing legitimate concerns that unless Peek is worked into this system on a permanent basis, he will be a goner after next season because someone will offer him a RFA contract that the Texans may or may not be able to meet. Fair concern I'd say. I hope Peek is the weakside starter next season because he will be more than ready. 2005 is his contract year after which he will be eligible for restricted free agency.
