Default Chronic: Iowa CB Charles Godfrey impresses Texans

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...t/5566675.html

Quote:
Iowa cornerback Charles Godfrey grew up in Baytown and played at Lee High School. He's 6-0, 207 pounds and expects to run the 40-yard dash in the 4.3s on Tuesday. He hopes to play for his favorite team.

Godfrey is such a big Texans fan that he has their logo tattooed on his right hand.

"That's my team," he said. "I'm from Texas. That's our NFL team.

"I would love to go home and play for the Texans. They have a team that's really on the rise. They've got a great scheme, and I would love to play for them."

Godfrey spent 15 minutes being interviewed by the Texans.

"They talked to me, got some information from me, told me they were interested and said they were looking forward to seeing me perform (Tuesday)," he said.

The Texans indeed are interested in Godfrey.

"I like him," general manager Rick Smith said. "He's fast and physical, and it's a position of need."

Godfrey's older brother, El Roberson, played quarterback at Kansas State.

With his size, Big 10 experience, and if he does run in the 4.3s it's really difficult to think a player like him at such an important position like CB would last until the 3rd round ?

That's what I have been reading. I'm just speculating. Since we do not have a 2nd round pick at this time I would like for him to fall to the 3rd round.

Maybe we trade down into the second to get him?

Regardless, it's just great to read someone has nothing but great things to say about our team.

With RB and CB so deep, its possible to get 1st round type talent in the 2nd. Which pshes 2nd round talent into the 3rd and so on. Its a good chanc

Honestly I'm not trying to be a cynic here, a wise-guy or whatever, but don't you really think these players will say and do about anything to get drafted
as high as possible? I would if I were in their shoes. And I doubt that Godfrey is thinking about the third round, he's probably thinking about the #18 overall ?

I think the kid would fit our team.

But let's be honest, how many kids that say they can run 4.3 actually run 4.3?

I would be fine with us drafting him in the 3rd IF he is worth picking in the
3rd. We do need DB help. I don't know much about the kid but the good thing is that if he is drafted by the Texans I won't have to change my loyalties to another NFL team. I mean since he went to the same high school I went to, I have to root for the team that drafts him right?

Who wouldn't want to do that? Agents spend half the combine talking to scouts asking what they think about this player or that player. Question is though, how many teams would you be willing to tattoo on your hand?

He has good size and weight for a corner, pretty big acutally, if he can really run in the 4.3's it sounds like a solid pick up for us.

Anyone know how his coverage skills are, nose for the ball, etc.?

Quote:
Overview
Godfrey entered his senior season barely a blip on the NFL radar, but after a breakout campaign that resulted in Second Team All-Big Ten honors, his stock is on the rise.

A former safety, Godfrey has shown significant improvement in his two years at the position. He is hyper-aggressive in his run support and seems to relish the physical aspect of the game. Godfrey averaged 74 tackles over his two seasons at cornerback, but it is his improvement as a pass defender that has scouts so intrigued. Godfrey showed better recognition as a senior and an ability to make the big play (nine pass break-ups, five INTs).

There are some concerns about his transition -- Godfrey isn't as fast on the field as his timed speed -- which could result in his being moved back to safety in the NFL, at least initially. There are some concerns, but Godfrey's physicality and raw athleticism will result in an early-round selection despite the fact that he remains a bit unpolished.
Quote:
Analysis
Positives: Rare combination of size and speed. ... Well-built athlete who has the physique of a safety and track star speed. ... Versatile, having played his first two seasons at safety before making the transition to cornerback for his junior and senior seasons. ... Flashed ability previously in his career, but enjoyed a breakout senior campaign. ... Rare pure speed. ... Significant improvement as a senior in terms of technique, play recognition and creating turnovers. ... Physical defender. ... Reliable open-field tackler who aggressively supports the run from his cornerback position. ... Good initial quickness and physicality to re-route the receiver. ... Smooth transition to run downfield. ... Effective in zone coverage. ... Reads the quarterback's eyes and can break on the ball to make plays. ... Learned to use his hands much more effectively as a senior, improving from two INTs and five pass break-ups to five INTs and nine break-ups in second season at cornerback. ... Still learning the nuances of the position, but possesses legitimate upside. ... Hard worker. ... Team leader.

Negatives: Still a bit raw after only playing cornerback for two seasons. ... Elite timed speed, but this speed isn't always evident on the field. ... Faster than he is quick. ... Improved as a senior, but doesn't always recognize the play as quickly as scouts would like, showing only marginal break on the ball despite his experience and athleticism.
