I know the current feeling is that the Texans arent going to sign any big names but don't you think they may at least inquire about Justin Smith? High motor and intensity; loves to get after the QB. I am afraid some team is going to overpay for him but if we can get him at a good price, I say we pull the trigger on that deal. With franchise tags and renegotiating contracts, the salary cap is pretty much just a number if your willing to spend the money to reneg and premium guaranteed portions.
The Texans have no excuse than to spare no expense especially in our division. I would rather spend more money and get someone who can actually play as opposed to overpaying for average talent like Weaver, Wade, Greenwood, etc. Let's get someone who can actually play. Smith opposite Mario would be awesome and would even help our depleted secondary until we can get them up to par.

I am sure there are a few teams that might pay Justin Smith top money. The guy has never missed a game for the Bengals in seven years. He has been consistently productive in every category until last year when his sack numbers dropped but the rest of his numbers were the same. That tells me to not be scared away by the drop in sacks last year. It tells me that he was unfortunate and was probably gameplanned for a lot and the other players didn't step up on the Bengals DL/LB corps. I just love the guys motor and his work ethic and the fact that, like Mario, he seems to be durable. They can make it work and at least we know with Justin, we won't be dealing with his dead cap space after signing him. Justin Smith, Travis Johnson, Amobi Okoye, Mario Williams. Cochran, Anthony Maddox, ND Kalu. That is some talent, right there.

Berry isn't a good fit with what Arizona is trying to do on defense, but he could be a pass rush threat from the RDE with the Texans. He has Houston roots, was with the Broncos (was a street FA find by Rick Smith), and played under Texans assistant Frank Bush while in Arizona. Berry could put up similar sack numbers to Justin Smith, while Kalu plays on run downs. Berry and Kalu combined would come cheaper than Smith alone, and without the long-term commitment. That's the direction that I think the Texans could (and should) go at RDE, with Mario making the move to LDE on a permanent basis.

Smith isn't much of an edge rusher, which is the big need, besides a fat ass DT

I hadn't thought of Berry, but he would seem to be a good fit for the right price.
