Default New Different Fun Texans Mock

This is not an “Ole Miss Texan” cures all, fix all type of mock. I strongly believe we’re more than 1 offseason away from filling all the holes on our team. I also generally like to plan for the long term success of the team instead of immediate impact. This is a combination of the two. I tried to be somewhat realistic in the draft picks and explanations as well as putting my Rick Smith/Gary Kubiak ‘thinking’ cap on and going for BPA too.

*Major free agency acquisition is a starting Cornerback. I don’t want us to pay top dollar for a CB like Samuel at all, but do want a solid CB that will start day 1 for us. I’m penciling in Marcus Trufant as the FA CB we sign because of Ray Rhodes ties to Seattle. I like a lot of the 1st/2nd round talent cb’s in the draft but believe a FA CB would really open up the draft for us to take BPA or Trade Down.

Draft day trade: Two scenarios both involving Atlanta trading to #18 giving us both their 2nd round picks (4ish and 18ish): (1) ATL takes McFadden, trades up to get Brohm/Woodson or (2) ATL take Matt Ryan, trades up to get Jonathan Stewart/Mendenhall. Not sure our exact position for later rounds so will put 18 for each.

Texans Draft:

2nd Round (4th pick): Anthony Collins, LT- Kansas
I think Collins could be a great LT for the Texans for years to come. We don’t have a lot of talent on the OL for Gibbs to ONLY draft late round o-lineman. He’s a guy that can sit behind Salaam at the start of the season and come in by mid season with that much more training from Gibbs. At 6-6, 318lbs he will keep Schaub upright, healthy and open up lanes for our RB’s for 10+ years.

2nd Round (18th pick): Martellus Bennett, TE- Texas ATM
Kubiak sees Bennett available and decides to go BPA in this case. TE is def. not a big area of need but Kubes sees the potential of having two great TE’s on this team. Daniels is a huge asset on this team and Gary wants makes this position a strength on the team. Bennett is 6-7 and 250lbs and not afraid to get dirty and play ball, he is Tough. Texans love his Blocking abilities as well as his catching abilities- could be the best block/catch TE in the draft. This bodes well for our offense and we’ll see a lot of 2 TE formations in the future. Red Zone TD % has been weak and Bennett will add a big body to catch the ball from Schaub. This will become the best Young TE tandem in the NFL.

3rd Round (18th pick): Jacob Hester, FB- LSU
Wait a minute there OMT, you pick a FB AND a TE??? You don’t know our team at all! We have Leach, Cook, and Abbate at FB we don’t need Hester- bad pick. You may be right but I think Kubiak falls in love with this kid’s heart and dedication to his team. I think Hester will be more than a FB for us. In addition to blocking, Hester is excellent at running BETWEEN THE TACKLES. He keeps the chains moving, is good at catching out of the backfield. He’s 6-1, 228lbs and he would play for the Texans a long time. Jack of all trades kind of guy that I see Kubiak giving the ball to quite a bit in his rookie season. If you don’t like Hester here, mark down Kevin Smith RB- Central FL. Good size but lacks the quickness. We need a guy that can run with force between the tackles. Our OL will take time to develop and once it does we’ll add a speed demon to go along with our current hard nosed RB’s.

4th Round (18th pick): Alvin “Ace” Bowen, OLB- Iowa St.
Similar guy to Michael Boulware imo. OLB in college but has potential to play safety as well. I suggest we groom him in at OLB though. Kid plays all out and talks all out too, apparently. Has nice coverage skills. Word is that his play and enthusiasm is contagious on the field. Finally a LB for us that can help in coverage too. Measures 6-3, 224 lbs.

5th Round (18th pick): Chad Rinehart, OG- Northern Iowa
6-5, 317lb Guard that Gibbs will teach up nicely. He needs to get stronger but has good quickness, uses his hands well, and has the lateral agility to mirror the defender. Should be a good fit to our scheme. Gets movement at the point of attack and can get to the second level when run blocking. Gibbs project that turns out to be a starter sooner than we think.

6th Round (18th pick): Rudolph Hardie, DE- Howard

Rick Smith tries to find a DE to eventually play opposite Mario. At 6-3, 270 lbs he’s all you can ask for in a 6th round pick, in my opinion. Is explosive out of his stance to get in the backfield. Small school player so we gotta like him ; ) Led nation in tackles for loss in ’07 I believe.

7th Round (18th pick): Marcus Walker, CB- Oklahoma

Might as well try someone in the secondary here. Walker is not small at 5-11, 198 lbs and has average speed at 4.45. Has unreliable hands and gambles too much. Has all the athleticism you could want with fluid hips and a good break but will drop the ball or give up the big play going for the INT. I see him as a good candidate to coach up b/c he can’t be counted on right now. Put him on special teams or practice squad and coach him for a while and see if you can’t get a 7th round steal.

*CB's Jenkins, Mckelvin, Cason, Talib, Cromartie all taken before our pick at "35".
*Jamaal Charles was taken before our other 2nd rd pick. Ray Rice was taken in the 2nd round.

It's not going to hurt my feelings if you critique me hard. I tried to look hard for some players that I though Kubiak would go to bat for or really like.

Depth Chart to come...

rep your way. like the trade down. have no clue what Atlanta will do. I do beleive some team will offer us their 2nd to trade up if we stay late in the 1st then we bite the bullet & take a LT (Williams or Collins) unless Cromartie or McKelvin is available. which ever position they select they need to address the opposite with 2nd meaning LT/CB or CB/LT bpa @ those positions.

not for sure if Hester gets a 3rd. grade if you target him why not trade down again? I would not pass on Forte if available however he would be a great possible feature back for this system while Hester would be rotational role player.

I like the areas of need you addressed with the rest of the picks, very hard to project much after the 3rd rd. at this point but I do think another cb in the 4th would be prudent, hopefully someone like Bennett last year.

Not a huge fan of the trade down but I like what you did in the 2nd Round with the picks you got for your 1st Rounder. Hester is an interesting pick in the 3rd though. He could be a damn good utility back in our offense. Not necessarily a need and maybe a little early for a FB-type talent but I think he could really flourish on our team. I would maybe look to finally address the Center position in the 4th Round instead of taking Bowen though.

You did address most of the needs of the team (taking the fact that you would address CB in FA) but I think Trufant is a LLLLLONG shot to come here. He is a local kid from the Seattle area, went to University of Washington and is a fan favorite for Seattle fans. couple that with the fact that he is also a probowl quality DB and they don't grow on trees. Seattle will retain this guy come hell or high water imho.

i did read a post a while back that said they knew a friend/relative of DeMeco who said DeMeco said that we were getting someone....i just can't remember who it was we were getting. Was it Trufant?

Thanks beerlover,
I agree with most all you say. trade down whether its late 1st or early 2nd + 2nd rd pick. target williams/collins for LT. later we go more likely martellus is gone- good spot for a late 2nd early 3rd kind of CB with the late 2nd rd pick. I didn't place that big of emphasis because we acquire Trufant through FA, have Fred Bennett starting opposite and then Dunta comes in as the 3rd CB when he's back and healthy. (i'm not counting on him like some are). FA CB eleviates need for CB in the first and lets us have more fun with the mocks.

I thought Hester will end up going late 2nd to early 4th round. I don't think he'll last untill our pick in the 4th and though Kubes may like this kid. (Never thought Fred Bennett would last till the 4th though!) I have no idea though.

I like Matt Forte a lot but the more I think about it I'm not sure if he's going to fit what Gibbs tries to do. Doesn't sound running laterally and then cutting, accelerating through the hole is a strength of Forte's. I think he gets taken by a non-ZBS team and they love him though.

Farther down we get- just gotta try and address some needs not as quick fixes but areas to groom that would fit our schemes..OL, DE, etc.

Getting a FA CB to come in a start may be hard and pricey but if possible would be great. I agree though it ain't gonna be easy.

I hear yalls hesitancy with Hester in the 3rd round and knew that was going to get a lot of complaints. I think we could target a RB here though. I picked Hester cuz he seems like a Kubiak kind of player and I would really see us utilizing him a lot in the running game as far as handing the ball off. I think he'd get a lot of carries and move the chains. Could be a 'reach' for us here, but a team with less needs could easily pick him up.

I thought about a Center somewhere in here but looked out our roster and we already have 6 possibly 7 centers, I wasn't sure we'd spend a 1-4 rounder on a Center this year. I could def. see us take a Guard/Center type of player that could play both.

Fun post and we agree on Trufant or Asomugha if price right. After that, we disagree. We have to fill holes with solid players not BPA. Our needs are to extensive to go OLB in draft. At #18 if Stewart there, I run the card up. I might be interested if Dallas offered both 1st and we offer them a 3rd next year but don't see that. In 3rd you go LT Tony Hills who will be there and do great in ZBS. Offers same as Hollins for less $.

I'm of the mindset we need to fill our holes with solid players from Free Agency. This opens up the draft to take BPA (usually focused towards needs that are still there though).

I hear a lot about Tony Hills being there in the 3rd. I've read he started the first 11 games in '07 at left tackle before suffering a season-ending fractured left fibula against Texas Tech. How's this working out for him and is he worth taking in the 3rd round? This seem very risky, but believe me, if Gibbs says its a go...I'm on board.

Good Mock and thinking Ole Miss.I know we got some money to spend again in FA but this FA has stated we're committed to building through the draft.I don't know if we'll make the huge splash in FA. I'd love to see us steal away Asomuagh but i think he's set to get paid or tagged. Quite possibly the same for Trufant.(his post season showing helped his cause)

Agree on the part if anyone has the ammo to make the trade back up in the first it's ATL and they have reason as well. After the past year they need to make a HUGE statement about their commitment to winning football and adding some character.

No Problem with the LT.

My problem is with Bennett. If we manage to execute a trade down we need two starters. While i like the thinking with Bennett specially in the end zone. I just think there is better value in selecting best CB or OLB available.

I like Hester but again value pick at this point. Demps or Forte would be good for me here. After that I'll take the rest of your haul.

I just don't like the sheer BPA without any thought behind. IMO you select several need positions and try to fill them with BPA.

I'm not sure about the trade down and Hester is a no go if you ask me... how much heart does Kubiak need when he has a LB playing FB and another guy who took snaps at tailback for him, not to mention an elite run-blocker in Leach.

And after that there isn't another Rb drafted at all. I know the draft is deep and I know lightning struck twice with Taylor and Walker but another is ridiculous.

You did sell me on the TE.

Another big time TE would help the two dimension system the texans are looking for alot better than a WR.

LOL...yea our TE's would be pretty sick and def. an area of strength. Our passing game would be phenominal with Andre Johnson, Andre Davis, Kevin Walter, Owen Daniels, and Martellus Bennett all on the field together.

I think we probably do end up grabbing a RB in the 3rd instead of Hester. I like Kevin Smith for that spot. I don't see us drafting 2 RB's. Probably draft one and look at another as an UDFA. Kubiak or Smith have said something about bringing in a couple of RB's this offseason, whether its FA, Draft, or UDFA.

I see us keeping Ahman Green for 1 more year. I see us re-signing Ron Dayne. Do we carry 3 or 4 Running Backs? That leaves Darius Walker who performed quite well, and Chris Taylor who is coming off injury. If we get 2 new RB's this offseason I see us keeping 1 of them. If we draft one, he better as hell not get cut.

That is the Golden question. Can Green produce like he once did or are we wasting money and time on a once great back?

I think Green deserves another year but I don't think the Texans are going to bring him back unless they can renegotiate his deal. McNair said as much when he was interviewed by McClain of the Chronicle. He said something to the effect regarding whether they were going to retain Green depended on both parties wanting him to play for the Texans. he said 'Green will also have to want to play for the Texans as well' which is owner-speak for renegotiate or you may not be in our plans. You can watch the interview on chron.com and the Green part is very early in the interview. McNair sounded really good and seemed to really be happy with the direction of the franchise and what the future holds and what opportunities may be siezed.

I tried to be somewhat realistic in the draft picks and explanations as well as putting my Rick Smith/Gary Kubiak Ďthinkingí cap on and going for BPA too.

*Major free agency acquisition is a starting Cornerback. I donít want us to pay top dollar for a CB like Samuel at all, but do want a solid CB that will start day 1 for us. Iím penciling in Marcus Trufant as the FA CB we sign because of Ray Rhodes ties to Seattle. I like a lot of the 1st/2nd round talent cbís in the draft but believe a FA CB would really open up the draft for us to take BPA or Trade Down.

We donít have a lot of talent on the OL for Gibbs to ONLY draft late round o-lineman. Heís a guy that can sit behind Salaam at the start of the season and come in by mid season with that much more training from Gibbs. At 6-6, 318lbs he will keep Schaub upright, healthy and open up lanes for our RBís for 10+ years.

2nd Round (18th pick): Martellus Bennett, TE- Texas ATM
Kubiak sees Bennett available and decides to go BPA in this case. TE is def. not a big area of need but Kubes sees the potential of having two great TEís on this team. This bodes well for our offense and weíll see a lot of 2 TE formations in the future.

You donít know our team at all! We have Leach, Cook, and Abbate at FB we donít need Hester- bad pick. You may be right but I think Kubiak falls in love with this kidís heart and dedication to his team. I think Hester will be more than a FB for us. In addition to blocking, Hester is excellent at running BETWEEN THE TACKLES. He keeps the chains moving, is good at catching out of the backfield. Heís 6-1, 228lbs and he would play for the Texans a long time. Jack of all trades kind of guy that I see Kubiak giving the ball to quite a bit in his rookie season. If you donít like Hester here, mark down Kevin Smith RB- Central FL. Good size but lacks the quickness. We need a guy that can run with force between the tackles. Our OL will take time to develop and once it does weíll add a speed demon to go along with our current hard nosed RBís.

4th Round (18th pick): Alvin ďAceĒ Bowen, OLB- Iowa St.

At 6-3, 270 lbs heís all you can ask for in a 6th round pick, in my opinion. Is explosive out of his stance to get in the backfield. Small school player so we gotta like him ; ) Led nation in tackles for loss in í07 I believe.

I see him as a good candidate to coach up b/c he canít be counted on right now. Put him on special teams or practice squad and coach him for a while and see if you canít get a 7th round steal.

*CB's Jenkins, Mckelvin, Cason, Talib, Cromartie all taken before our pick at "35".
*Jamaal Charles was taken before our other 2nd rd pick. Ray Rice was taken in the 2nd round.
I would be ok with a move back but those players you took in the 2nd and 3rd round were horrible Jacob Hester as the running back dude your smoking crack that is a horrible mock draft!!!!!

Texans Draft:
2nd Round (37th pick): Anthony Collins, LT- Kansas
2nd Round (48th pick): Antoine Cason CB Arizona , he may creep up the ranking but if he is here I am taking him. Very smart player.
3rd Round (79th pick): Matt Forte RB- Tulane , This is a little early for Hester and I do not pass on Forte.
4th Round (114th pick): Ahyyba Rubin DT Iowa State I motor guy, has size and quickness from the NT position.
5th Round (143th pick): Brad Cottam TE Tennessee
6th Round (174th pick):Rudolph Hardie, DE- Howard
7th Round (205th pick): Thomas Williams OLB USC
I like the trade down idea. Good effort overall, like the idea of the TE, just like the Cottam's size and hands combination, plus he is a 4th or 5th rounder right now.

I gotta feeling that Singletary is going to pluck Woody off the board well before the sixeth. He gave him a lot of positive attention at the senior bowl pratices.

You caught me before I changed the 6th rounder to PHAROAH's guy. He sounded good when I look at him. I agree with you Woody should go for higher them a 6th.
